America Unearthed (2012)
No science no entertainment
When I heard the show advertised my interest was perked. But that interest was soon squashed, replaced with disappointed and irritation when I finally saw the first episode and the few subsequent ones that I watched just to make sure. Finally, I thought, something other then those green lit screens with white, glowing eyes whispering in terror "did you hear that? Shh, what was that?" But no, just more pseudoscience disguised as true science. Do people really believe this junk. If they do this country is in real trouble. There are so many interesting things out there but we are treated to kindergarten pablum! Couldn't we have just one good archaeology show?
Looking for Richard (1996)
Wow
Wow! I just found this. Been out of the country for a long time and I seem to have missed a lot. I love Shakespeare and have seen many, many productions and films. I find this fascinating and could have watched more. Some say it was laughable, I don't see it. It is a learning experience and Pacino captured Richard perfectly. Better then most I have seen. There is a lovely mix of the scholarly, the actor's processes and a good bit of fun. I felt as if I was discovering new views along with the actors. Maybe it isn't to everyone's tastes but it beats out the pablum that is the usual fair in these times. I too greatly regret the whole film was never made and released in conjunction with Looking for Richard. It would have been magnificent.
Moby Dick (1956)
What a film!
Well, Moby Dick was playing on the tele tonight. Even though I have the DVD I watched both showings. I'm glad to read so many positive comments, all of which I agree with. I am disturbed by the box some want to put Gregory Peck in. I liked his Ahab. Stiff, wooden? What would Ahab have been like? My guess is stiff and wooden, eaten inside by his obsession only to have it burst out in moments of passion. I think his or Huston's interpretation fits well with the period the novel is set in. I also agree with all those who like the varied cast with many good character actors and not pretty faces. My favorite none action scenes are those between Peck and Leo Genn who raises this piece to Shakespearean levels. As with most of Genn's roles I now cannot picture anyone else playing Starbuck. As you can tell I love this movie. There are so few films these days that aren't reaching for the lowest common denominator. This film has the feel of repertory theatre.
The Red Beret (1953)
Love this movie
Don't know why this movie appeals to me this much except for the excellent Leo Genn who makes any movie better. It is one of those that I can watch over and over. I think it is that there are so many great British character actors and Allan Ladd isn't bad but his usual self. The story line is simple but then I was a small child at the beginning of the war and all the movies were very simplistic. I think that is what I enjoy. Not a lot of side drama, just a straight forward telling of men at war in the old idealized style.
The editing is a bit choppy in places and the old blue screen is obvious in odd places but "Sorry for the man who hears the pipes and was na born in Scotland."
King Arthur (2004)
Fantastic
I too will never bother with the critics. I loved this movie. Fast paced and believable. Also nice to see a woman doing something other then waving a handkerchief. I can't even believe it was panned after some of the garbage I have seen. I'm sure the problem was that everyone was looking for another remake of all the other Arthurian movies and this isn't one. No wizards flying through the air no obvious special effects but a very tight story that puts the whole legend in another era and under far more realistic circumstances. Once again the fine British actors win the day. If you read the bios of the cast their training is remarkable. They have all paid their dues. If you like action with a point this is a great movie for you.
