No One Will Save You (2023)
A short film made long...er
I'll give it 5 stars straight down the middle.
I am a huge fan of Low Sci Fi, Broody, Alien Invasion films. For context "The Vast Of Night" is one of my top movies but I thought "Nope" was a think-piece for the low attention span Marvel generation.
Having said that this movie straddled the line between the two. As the title says it would have worked great as a short film.
The no dialogue is great in something that's maybe 10-20 mins but an hour and a half is a bit much.
The B arc with Maude was as obvious as daylight from the get go but the alien invasion had some great shots and interesting sound design.
The cgi for the budget wasn't bad. I've seen worse but also have seen better.
I think people giving terrible reviews are mixing up "Ending" with "Final scene" the Ending was The Aliens saw she had been through enough and let her live in their post invasion utopia which isn't a bad ending. The final scene, well the final scene depicting this ending is cheesy and way off tone.
All in all its an interesting watch. Nothing to tell everyone you know to watch it but as a home alone watch its not bad. But that's most films today, not bad is as good as we get.
Why Are You Like This (2018)
Bad reviewers are not the target audience.
This show is great. All the down votes are from people that this is making fun of. One review said something like they are not believable people because they activists for alot of causes but in reality they are just dumb...lol because I'm sure most of the thoughts and prayers/flag over profile pic people on instagram are highly intelligent on geo politics and history. And as for the Muslim down votes, ONE scene must have been shared on Muslim Facebook or something because it looks like a huge community effort to downvote based on that scene and not by anyone that actually watched it. And honestly if that's the response to that one scene in a comedy tv show how can you wonder why you're represented as humourless and religiously oppressed when you're just proving the point.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet (2020)
I see what they were trying but really!? A third season?
Now I love Megan, Rob, Charlie and David from the Podcast and IASIP and I'm not one of many idiots here saying "iTs nO sUnNy" as if that's all they're allowed write for the rest of their lives.
I didn't go into this thinking it was anything more than a workplace comedy.
But it's trying to do two things that two other shows already did perfectly but failing to deliver either.
Silicon Valley did the business driven tech company comedy perfectly, but with this we don't care enough about the company or game or industry to get any tense moments of acquisition or losing staff, failed startup, successful launch or anything Silicon did well in regards to the inner workings of the business except the brilliant rougue episode "Dark Quiet Death" that was the show, do that again!
It had the inner workings of an indy startup getting big and the pressure it put on the creators. That was it, that was the Silicon Valley episode the rest of the show should have imitated.
The second show is Community, if you can't do anything to hook you about the business make all the characters wacky cartoon versions with heart and give us some character driven arcs or fun "bottle episodes" or goofy hijinks but it fails that also with some of the characters being overly unrealistic (Jo) in comparison to the ones playing it straight.
Robs character is so egotistical he's unlikeable but I think they were going for more like a Jeff Winger character who's egotistical but has heart. Then obviously CW is the silly old man like Pierce.
But these Community like characters don't work unless every characters has some over the top presence which they don't, i.e: the boring tester couple that we spend WAY too much time with with no comedic payout.
So all in all I really wanted this to be great but it's all over the place and ends up being middle of the road, not un-entertaining but not funny either. I will watch it until its cancelled which hopefully is after season 3. How it got renewed, I don't know...?
Fear Street: 1666 (2021)
As an Irish person I just couldn't...
Why the accents!? Why!? I honestly couldn't stand it. Its basically offensive to me. They could have just done a toned down American accent. Otherwise this is still a bad movie/trilogy. Copying elements from loads of horror movies isn't an homage unless the reference is on point, this is like a Gen Z kid that only saw the trailers of all the classic horror movies then tried to write one giving them all a wink. That and they've definitely never met an Irish person.
