Star Trek: Voyager: Fair Haven (2000)
Top of The Nebula To You !
Watched this episode last night and really enjoyed it.
The majority of the episode is based in the virtual town of 'Fair Haven ' where we see the loneliness of Captain Jaynewaye finding solace in a holographic bartender.
All the actors look to be really enjoying there ' r + r ' from space and the stand out scenes are Tom and Harry envisioning there perfect coastal scene and a somewhat seasick Tuvok struggling to keep his lunch intact.
Although my fav is a small scene stealing clip of Seven frequenting the local alehouse.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Solitary Cyclist (1984)
One of my favs
This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire series of Sherlock Holmes.
This episode has all that is good in the ITV Classic.
The beautiful Barbara Wilshere as the cyclist in peril, A vile villain in Michael Siberry as Woodley.
As always the costumes and places are simply stunning as is the acting from all.
What stands out for me is the excellent comedy from both Jeremy Brett and David Burke.I always laugh out loud in 2 scenes in paricular. Holmes explaining to Dr Watson hi utter failure in his stake out. And then Watson talking to himself unaware of Holmes earwigging
"Go to the nearest public-house. That is the centre of country gossip" - Watson
"Capital idea Watson ! " Bellows Holmes in sarcastic tone.
The only thing that tops this is the altercation in the Public House where the brutal thuggery of Woodley ( backfists Holmes sending him hurtling across the room )
Is given a lesson in gentlemanly pugilism ( "Only a ruffian uses the back of the fist ! "..... " and i sir am a gentleman " - Holmes and is quickly dealt with and is then given a round of applause by the patrons of the house.
My favorite ever Holmes line !
Doctor Who: City of Death: Part One (1979)
Mona Lisa Mystery !
Classic episode which shows Dr Who at its best , Tom Baker absolutely brilliant ham !! All the cast seem to be having a great time and literally chewing up the scenery .
Lalla Ward makes a great companion to the Doctor and the supporting cast reads like a who's who ...ahem of modern day films.
Julian Glover is an able villain with Tom Chadbon as a sort of English Humphrey Bogart.
Great model in the opening episode , which considering the budget, the bbc effects department did us proud with.
Wish bbc 3 would show the older Dr Who's to compliment the new ones.
The Pledge (2001)
Jacks' Giant Talent
Watched The Pledge twice now and was awe struck by Jacks great performance.
This is a slow burn film with great photography and fine supporting performances from all.
But its Jack Nicholsons' show and i couldn't take my eyes off him when he's on screen. A truly great actor.
Sean Penns direction is steady and assured and i look forward to seeing great things from him in the future.
Hans Zimmers score is a delight with a hint of melancholy throughout.
A thought provoking film well worth seeing !!
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Why i go to the movies
Where do i begin ? I am not an articulate writer so please bear with me, i have seen many, many movies in my time, different languages, genres and themes. There are good movies, bad movies and indifferent ones.
But there are few master pieces, and even fewer modern ones, and Return of the King is a true master-piece of cinema.
It would be a truly cold person that would not be touched by the characters in these 3 films and it doesn't matter that it is set in a fantasy environment as in all films if we cannot relate with the characters then there is no soul in the screen. Everone involved in ROTK is at the top of their game and the Academy where spot on to award all the 'gold guys' that were on offer to them. It does have it flaws maybe ( soem say the ending was a bit drawn out) but hey , why would you want to leave middle earth when you love being in this place.
Thank You to Peter Jackson and co for filling my heart with wonder once more i look at the silver screen !
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
YIN/....YANG..BANG.. ! QT.
WOW , This movie is incredable. As Kill Bill Vol 1 was all out action and simplistic dialogue so Kill Bill Vol 2 was a journey into the personas of all the main characters. i cant believe people are saying that they liked the first film but hated the second . the 2 films are QT,s double edged 'sword' his yin and yang of his Film Life. Vol 1 is his male/ yang side ,all testosterone and bang ! bang ! explosive side . Vol 2 is his female/ yin side , delving more deeply into the reasons and emotions of why The Bride is hell bent on seeking to "Kill Bill !". All the performances are great but Uma and david are absolutely outstanding Plus Michael Parks who i hardly recognized asa 70 year old mexican. The music is the soul of both films and demonstrates thats QT is the master of the record collection ! My fav scene is probably when The Bride remembers her teachings of Pai Mei ,this scene got the hairs to stand up on the back of my kneck ! but there are too many to mention and i recommend you find out the gems for yourself. Happy Movie Going !
