Aftermath (2021)
A Little Too Late
The idea was executed okay in my opinion, but it's probably the fifth time I've seen this plot played out and end the same way and it's gotten kind of stale at this point. You've got a generic couple in a fancy new house, creepy stuff happens, husband doesn't believe his wife - is it a ghost, is it a person, is the wife crazy? - you get the point.
Maybe if this had come out a decade ago it would have been fresh but this sort of thing has become so predictable by now and this movie didn't really bring anything new to the table.
I will say the part with the dude sliding out from under the bed was creepy though, that genuinely unsettled me. Everything else was meh.
Sembunyi: Amukan Azazil (2013)
Always a Price to Pay for Paradise
Went into this without any expectations, and ended up really enjoying it. It has some tropes: the slightly suspicious isolated village, welcoming villagers that just might be hiding something, a dangerous creature in the woods whose motives aren't quite clear... But the story was still a fun ride, and the ending wasn't at all what I was expecting as I watched the movie. What you think you know is just the surface, and I loved witnessing the mystery unravel.
Qua tim máu (2014)
Heart in the Right Place
If you're expecting a scary horror movie with the usual angry ghosts trying to kill people, this is not the right film. I'd only loosely classify it as horror, depending on your definition. It's really more of a mystery/thriller with some light supernatural elements.
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it kept my interest throughout. The characters were enjoyable and even though some parts of the plot were predictable, I was still surprised by things I didn't foresee and the story fit together very well at the end. There was really nothing spooky or scary about it, but the story itself was interesting enough that this didn't bother me.
I highly recommend this movie, only if the story/characters are more important to you than getting scared.
Lights Out (2016)
More Like Lights On, Please
(I originally saw the short that was made, and when I heard that they were doing a feature film I was super excited)
It's been 5 years and this movie still gives me the creeps. I don't know what it was about this movie, but it's the first horror film to actually scare me in a long time and even today it's still probably in my top 3. The plot personally didn't interest me too much, but the way that girl moved and the way darkness was used to enhance fear - a day or so after watching it, I was walking in the dark through my house to go to bed, and nearly had a heart attack when I saw a dark shape (that ended up just being my fan). It's rare that horror movies really stick with me like that, but this one got me. Still gives me the creeps thinking about her in that doorway. Ugh.
Also they really just jump right in with that opening scene. Wow. Couldn't even eat my popcorn for the first 5-10 minutes because the theater was so silent.
Separation (2021)
Just Throw Away Both Parents
I personally didn't care for the plot, as it's nothing that hasn't been done before, but I appreciated the monster/ghost designs and how they evolved from the dad's artwork. With a better story that sort of thing could have a lot more potential. Otherwise there's nothing particularly remarkable about this movie.
