The Great Caruso (1951)
Great Movie...But...
I enjoyed the great talent of Mario Lanza who portrayed Caruso. Although I'm not an opera fan, I appreciate the pageantry and the rich, full voices.
I realize that this movie was made in the l950s when out of wedlock children portrayed in film weren't readily accepted.
But, the real Caruso did father several children in addition to the baby daughter mentioned in the movie. He had a long relationship with an older lady.
They could have mentioned his other children without getting into details. They may have still been alive when this movie was made. Their children and grandchildren, I'm sure, would've appreciated the acknowledgement of their existence and the respect.
Also, here's another minor objection:
When Caruso was showing off his baby to his friends a week after her birth, the nurse enters and berates him loudly in front of his friends for having the baby in the room
Now Caruso, being the dominant personality that he was, wouldn't have accepted that disrespect from her. A man like Caruso would have seen the baby as being his to do as he pleased, the nurse was working for him and could have been replaced.
I could've seen him firing her on the spot for the disrespect and sending one of his assistants to go out and find another baby nurse.
Minor complaints...otherwise I enjoyed this movie very much.
The Cowboy and the Lady (1938)
I Loved This Movie...But
I saw this movie recently on TCM and for the most part, loved it!
I liked the shy, bumbling character of "Stretch" and the sheltered, Mary who fell hard for him.
Of course, being sheltered, she was limited in her experience with men.
But fortunately, she fell hard for a man with character and who loved her truly.
I knew that when she lied and misrepresented herself that she would be caught.
I especially loved the night when they married. It was a sweet throwback to an earlier time when single ladies weren't in single men's rooms at night or any time for that matter! It wasn't proper in 1938. It was very sweet and romantic for Stretch to propose marriage. His search for a wife was over!
Here are my slight criticisms:
Also, unsure if I can believe that his REAL name was "Stretch".
Then, there are the scenes where Mary was at the rodeo cleaning up. She became filthy and her dress was torn as a result.
I would think that she could have had her maids send her some clothes or wire her some money so she could purchase some clothes and toiletries. Or even ask her new husband to purchase her some clothes. There was a scene where she attempted to purchase some pants but was interrupted by the phone call. Why didn't she or Stretch purchase clothing and toiletries for her she before she boarded the bus?
Even rich ladies have to bathe and look presentable. A rich lady with her background wouldn't travel on the train for 3 days in a filthy, torn dress and unwashed. Suppose her dad and his friends had ALREADY arrived when she got there? How would she explain her appearance?
Also, the scene in the framework of the house lasted a little too long, in my opinion.
But other than that: I enjoyed this movie! Gary and Merle were great in the leads!
Perfect Romance (2004)
I Loved This Movie!
I watched this movie for the first time during February, 2006 the month for romance.
I, too, loved this movie! I taped it on my DVR and will transfer it to video soon.
If it's available, I may even purchase the video/DVD to avoid the commercials! I found the characters believable and realistic.
I especially liked the look on Dr. Peter's face when his student flirted with him in his class. Priceless!!!
That expression was a clue that he was very good at romanticizing life and love but unsure about himself and love in reality. However, though he was unsure of himself in reality, of course, he wouldn't (or shouldn't) get involved with his student.
Even before that, he uprooted his life for someone who he met, with whom he had a whirlwind romance but limited physical contact after their initial meeting.
Nothing was mentioned about them visiting each other. Most of their romance was by phone and possibly emails.
He romanticized their relationship. The reality was that she had psychological issues big time! Unfortunately, he paid a expensive price to be brought back to reality!!
Also, unlike another reviewer on this board, I can understand why Miles "Boogie" ate the burned pancake. He was so in love with Jenny that he didn't want to hurt her feelings by not eating it!
Plus he was depicted in some ways as unimaginative and somewhat clueless so eating the burned pancake wasn't a stretch.
However, though he may have been unimaginative and unambitious, he was steady, faithful and had been in love with Jenny for years.
Even Jenny's son, Jesse, knew that "Boogie" was right for his mom. Remember the scene at "Boogie's" house when Jesse said that his mom could make her pottery in the barn on the property? Because "Boogie" was a steady presence in Jesse's life, he automatically assumed that he & Jenny would move in "Boggie's" new home.
I was so touched by his offer to Jenny's ex and how his ex dismissed "Boogie".
I wonder if the outcome would have been different if he knew that "Boogie" really DID have the $31,000?
Would he have taken the money and run?
Or would he, with his vanity, taken the money, spent it and stayed in town because he figured that Jenny would ALWAYS be in love with him?
Anyway, I loved the ending.... and I'm glad that it ended well for every body!
Great Date Night movie!
Morning Glory (1993)
The Movie Was A Disappointment
I read the book and really enjoyed it from beginning to end. However, when I saw the movie I was very disappointed. First of all, no disrespect to Deborah Raffin but she was too mature to play a woman of 24/25. The late Christopher Reeve was also miscast-same reason. Will, according to the book, was around 30. I would have love to see a little more exploration of his military life, his friend Red, Elly's trip to see him as that was an important part of the characters' storyline development. Also Miss Beasley was miscast as the book mentioned her being a Plus Size lady. I know the movie didn't have the budget of the "Bridges Of Madison County" which I believe was released around the same time.
But to me this was a very poorly made, low budget, miscast movie. As someone mentioned, I wish that Miss Spenser would come out of retirement and write screenplays for her books as they ought to be. She knows her characters better than anyone, I hope that she would consider doing the casting too. The movie let me down!
