An American Werewolf in Paris (1997)
Agreed... this movie stunk!
I don't know why I get my hopes up for sequels... my hopes are always destroyed.
This movie is no exception. For starters, it's important to note that An American Werewolf in London (AAWiL) will always have a special place in my heart as one of the first horror movies I remembers seeing on HBO as a kid.
This movie lacked just about everything that AAWiL had: good acting, good special effects, a decent soundtrack, etc.
Tom Everett Scott is a terrible actor... the kind of actor I see and wonder how he ever gets casted for anything. Julie Delpy is OK and I dig her accent. Everyone else was pretty much fluff and/or fodder. The effects were God awful. It's hard enough to pull off CGI monsters and hairy ones are even harder to make believable. When you are making a sequel for a movie that had effects that are still impressive by today's standards, some serious effort has to be made if the intent is to make a movie that rivals the original. This one isn't even in the same league as AAWiL. The music for AAWiL was also very well done. AAWiP had... Bush? Yeah, that's the route you want to go to create a timeless classic.
Unlike other reviews I wouldn't even go so far as to say this movie would have good as a stand-alone (no connection to AAWiL), but I wouldn't even give it that much credit.
It just sucked.
Runaway Jury (2003)
Runaway Propaganda
Man was I mad when I realized this movie was about gun control. I was so duped by the previews that never said anything about what the actual trial was about... because it really could have been about anything since the movie is supposed to be about court corruption.
I think this movie is set up to show people that this sort of legal action is acceptable and to oppose a bill to prohibit civil liability actions from being brought or continued against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition for damages resulting from the misuse of their products by others. Bill # S.659
The only part of this movie that made sense was when the one juror said, "If they win this then where does it stop... sue Mc Donalds for making a burger that clogged your arteries...". I say this every time I hear of this nonsense. Sue a car maker because someone in your family was killed by a drunk driver. These sort of case totally circumvent the whole point of crime and punishment and take the weight off the shoulder of a government organization (BATF) that is set up to avoid guns being sold improperly. Why should the gun manufacturer have to scrutinize every person who buys their products. How about if every time the police catch a hacker I sue the company that made his/her computer? Never mind that justice is not being served to the person that actually committed the crime... as long as I get money.

This movie tops horror movies up to today in story, effects, and suspense. It was ahead of its time then and it still is. The creature effects (Rob Bottin) were so cutting edge that you would think that it was made today, not 21 years ago.
And since it was made in a time when getting top bill actors wasn't such a huge issue, they actors were perfect for their respective roles.
The story was fantastic. No cheesy catch phrases, or lame lines that were to be played over and over in previews. Just normal dialogue among characters.
The feeling this movie creates of isolation and suspicion is incredible. In movies today you have one big name who is the hero and one big name for the foe... this movie you really don't know who is going to be next... I've watched this movie dozens of times and I'm still caught off guard.
This movie will remain in my top ten favorite films.
28 Days Later... (2002)
Eh...
While zombie apocalypse movies are probably my favorite kind of horror movie this one didn't quite hold up to the classics Dawn & Day of the Dead or the Return of the Living Dead.
I really liked the idea of the "virus' having an almost immediate effect eliminating the whole sub plot of a character getting bit, trying to hide his infection and turning on his comrades.
I also found myself cringing every time someone made a loud noise in fear of attracting the infected. That;s a pretty good sign of a thriller.
There is no perfect way to tell a story like this so I won't sharpshoot it oo much. The biggest thing I had a problem with was where are all the cars. A city that is comepletely empty, spare a couple of cars? And the highways being comepletely devoid of any traffic. How is it that a story takes place in an over populated city doesn;t have thousands of empty cars filling/blocking the streets. In as much chaos that must have ensuedin that 28 days I doubt the cars just disappeared. It certainly would have made the story move a lot slower trying to get out of the city though... In fact I would imagine it would isolate the characters to the confines of the city for that reason.
I always liked these movies because it gets me to thinking; If something like this happened where I live what would I do to survive? What kind of supplies would I always have with me when moving around a city full of zombies. Guns. Ammo. flashlights, batteries would certainly be top on the list. I hate watching people fighting against incredible amounts of enemies with a baseball bat and machette. Although it certainly keeps it real to the fact that England is foolishly removing guns from the citizens hands.
Any how... I liked this movie enough to have watched it all the way through but I doubt I will go out of my way to watch it again.
