The Passion of the Christ (2004)
The Crucifixion in All of Its Brutality
To say that this movie is emotionally stimulating would be an understatement.
Christians can't help but be moved by the suffering of our Lord. Many of us have read the Gospel accounts. However, to see it unfold before our eyes in such a realistic fashion is sobering. How? That the Lamb of God; sinless, holy and perfect would die such a brutal death for anyone. Especially for anyone, like me, who is but a wretched sinner. What manner of love is this?
The movie, as in any movie, takes some dramatic license. However, Mel Gibson's film does not water down the Gospel accounts to try to make the movie more "appealing". It is clear, by the time you leave the movie, why Christ died and the love He has for all.
May this movie convict many non-believers to evaluate the price paid by Christ for us all. Hopefully, this movie causes many unbelievers to read and study the Bible and come to understand the Truth.
For believers, may it awaken us to how the Son suffered so that we may be reconciled to the Father. Perhaps to see what Christ has done for us will stir the Holy Spirit within to shine brightly to all.
"Praise Him, through whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, ye creatures here below.
Praise Him, above, ye heavenly hosts; Praise Him, Father, Son and Holy Ghost."
Clockstoppers (2002)
Great movie, if your 8 years old.
I watched this movie last night with my soon to be nine year old son. He seemed to enjoy it. I, on the other hand, think I would have gotten more enjoyment from watching snow melt in the winter.
The acting is horrible. The science fiction is lame. The only near redeeming quality is the special effects.
If you want to watch a great sci-fi movie about time, watch "Time After Time".
Two Weeks Notice (2002)
Same story different actors
What's the seemingly endless formula for a "successful" chick flick? A cutesy female lead who has never been able to find Mr. Right and a handsome rich fellow who can't seem to get past being shallow.
This movie follows the "Pretty Woman" formula fairly close. Exception, instead of the female lead being a good hearted prostitute, she is portrayed a good hearted left wing attorney.
Grant, of course, plays the rich immature schmuck.......
I guess the old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is what causes Hollywood to thrive.
If you are interested in an average romantic movie (AKA "Chick Flick"), this may be for you. If your looking for a "classic" romantic movie, hold on to your cash and catch this one on DVD.
Spider-Man (2002)
Great Special Effects
This movie has incredible special effects. That, in my opinion, is the extent of what makes this a "good" movie. The acting is subpar (with the exception of Willem Defoe).
It's a shame more time couldn't have been expended making the plot as exciting as the other Super Hero movies (i.e., Superman, Batman,etc.).
Special Effects + mediocre plot + bad casting = So So movie
The Matrix (1999)
Stunning Visual Effects but zzzzzzzzzz
Many of the effects in this movie have been copied over and over. This movie has excellent action and effects but I found the story too unbelievable to enjoy.
I check my watch several times while in the theater......
High Noon (1952)
Possibly the Best Western Ever
The suspense and acting in this film make it one of the best ever made. A great tale how a town handles fear.
Gary Cooper does an incredible job of playing the sherriff. He only wants to retire and move out of town with his new wife (a sexy young Grace Kelly).
Unfortunately, as often in life, the past must be addressed before the future can be enjoyed.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
An Excellent movie with a dumb title
The first time I saw this movie I almost busted a gut from laughing. The three main characters (Pete, Delmar, & Everett) bust out of a chain gang to go find buried loot.
Along the way they meet all types of strange characters. From a blind "seer" pushing a hand cart, to the KKK, and other outlandish characters......
The music in this film adds to the country setting. A most enjoyable film. I highly recommend for those who enjoy a good laugh.
Perhaps this movie would have had a better box office performance had the title been different.
Licence to Kill (1989)
An awesome Bond flick
Timothy Dalton made an excellent Bond (this may shock some people). This movie starts out with the usual chase but ends in Bond parachuting to a wedding.
After his best friend's (Felix Leiter) wedding, a group of thugs kill Felix's wife and greatly harm Felix. This turns into a personal vendetta against the baddies.
Bond decides to strike out against the chief crook without the blessing of MI-6.
It's refreshing to see Bond act human. Dalton gives the character a range of emotions that often lacks in other Bond films. Ian fleming, if he were still alive, might have found this Bond closer to the Bond in his books.
Bond actually has feelings!
One of my favorite Bond movies! Roger Moore has nothing on Mr. Dalton. Given a few more pictures, he would have grown even further in the character.
The Natural (1984)
The Best Baseball Movie
The supernatural is prevalent in this film. Possibly one of Redford's best works. This story revolves around Roy Hobbs, a small town boy with a big dream to become the "greatest baseball player that ever lived".
Unfortunately, as in real life, many obstacles come in the way of Roy fulfilling this dream.
The casting of this film is excellent. Robert Duvall as the sportswriter always looking for a story. Wilford Brimley as the crusty baseball manager looking for a winning season and a host of other excellent actors (Kim Bassinger, Barbra Hershey. Glenn Close, etc.).
Reminds us of the innocence of the game.
Left Behind (2000)
Booooooooring!
To date, I have read all of the books in the Left Behind series. This movie, which is supposed to cover the first book in the series, does the book an incredible injustice. If you have not read the book, please do not see this movie.
The acting is cheesy..... The "special" effects are horrendous.... and the only stand out acting is done by Clarence Gilyard.
Perhaps someday we will see a true epic based on this awesome book.
The Patriot (2000)
Excellent Revolutionary War picture
Hollywood has made several great movies about wars fought in the 20th century, but I can count on one hand the total number of decent movies regarding America's war for freedom.
This movie, although fictional, takes in consideration many factual characters and settings. It seems that since it's release this movie has been grossly under-rated. Methinks that the many liberals in Hollywood are not that keen on patriotic themes.
The Dirty Dozen (1967)
Excellent Fictional War Movie
From the opening moments, featuring the hanging of a condemned soldier, to the climax, this film is full of action.
Sit back and enjoy an incredible movie, without the cursing and graphic violence that's so prevalent in today's movies.
The casting and direction were superb!
We Were Soldiers (2002)
The best Vietnam Movie.
We were Soldiers is a fine movie based on the book by Hal Moore. Although this movie capture the events of only half of the book, we are shown how the Unites States is drawn into it's first major conflict with the NVA.
Greatly outnumbered Col. Moore, as played by Mel Gibson, holds off an attack by several thousand North Vietnamese. This movie exemplifies courage, teamwork, and Simper Fidelis.
If your wanting to see a movie about Vietnam, actually written by someone who was there, this is an excellent movie. The book is even better!

Patton (1970)
George C. Scott's Greatest Performance
I have seen this movie several times and am still amazed at how closely George C. Scott captures the character of Patton. This is not a biography of Patton's entire life. The story starts in Africa and Patton's successful war against General Rommel and ends with the fall of Berlin. One wonders how the war against Germany would have fared without Old Blood and Guts!
I thinks a movie dedicated to Patton's younger years would be very fascinating.
The Scorpion King (2002)
Very interesting action film.
I didn't expect a whole lot from this movie when I rented it yesterday. I am not a fan of wrestling.
I was pleasantly surprised by the action sequences and the humor in this movie. The most awesome highlights were the special effects. I would recommend this movie to anyone that liked any the first Conan movie. The film contains similar period fighting but is much less graphic (sexually and violence) that Conan. A Great watch for children 15 and older.
