Deadware (2021)
Better than it has any right to be
Deadware is an interesting concept and much better than it has any right to be with a cast of 2-3 and hardly any budget.
The end is a little rushed but the lead up to it is entertaining and able to deliver a good atmosphere as well as a few pretty good jump scares. The two characters are interesting to watch and carry the film very well considering it's simplicity.
There are a lot of technical issues, which might be jarring for some so you have to look past them, namely that they use technology that wasn't around and that the internet had no where near the bandwidth to do what they do in the film. It's supposed to be set in the late 90s (i think '99) and I'm not really sure why? It didn't seem especially important to the plot and being set in a more recent time period would have fixed most of them.
Candyman (2021)
Not a slasher, which is a good thing!
Reading many reviews on here I was not expecting much from this film. I was extremely pleasantly surprised.
The Idea that socio-political commentary can't be scary baffles me, ok it's not an unadulterated slasher fest but a) slashers aren't actually scary and b) the original is not a slasher.
The truth is we live in an age of desensitization where it is hard to be scared of horror anymore, if that's all you're after then maybe this isn't for you (but what mainstream film is these days?). If you want great script writing, wonderful characters, oodles of creepiness, steeps of faithful and expansive Candyman lore then it probably is.
