Everybody Loves Raymond: The Finale (2005)
They Got It Right
It's beyond belief that anyone would consider the Raymond finale to be bad. Unfortunately, too many viewers have grown to expect fireworks and fanfare and guest stars in a series finale. That never works. See the Seinfeld finale for how to screw it up terribly. The last episode of a series should indeed be just another episode. What it should do, and what this one does admirably, is strike the tone of the show on the nose (pun not intended). The theme of the episode captures the emotions of Ray and his family for each other, something that is at the center of the series' success. It seems that too many people want to twist the show into a soap opera and subvert everything it was about just to cap things off with a bang. That's nonsense. Raymond is an example of one of the finest finales of all time, right up there with the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Scrubs.
