The Neighbor (2007)
Easy going, comical romance
In the mold of the traditional 'Pride and Prejudice' romance. This adds a little extra character depth and a number of excellently crafted comical moments all wrapped around a fairly simple plot of ice lady meets lost, passionate artistic man. Entertaining and real. Nothing new, just nice to smile through an hour or so of your life. Matthew Modine takes on the role of the forlorn architect desperate to show he can disprove his ex wife's opinion of him as the eternal dreamer. He plays the comic moments very well with his easy smile. Michèle Laroque in the first English speaking role of hers I have witnessed takes the aloof ice maiden model and gives it a light comical edge from the first to the last as she is slowly warmed....
In Her Shoes (2005)
More intelligent than a normal chick flick
I was very surprised by this movie. I try not to expect too much of films my girlfriend can't wait to see. I was surprised this didn't follow the usual 'mills & boon' formula with sisterly love hate peppered loosely. Certain references in particular to the shoe thread throughout kept the interest of the majority of girlie's around, but the evolving relationships of the main characters were finely crafted and kept the interest of non-chick-flicking shoe-loving shopaholic minority. The music was nice backdrop to the lives of Rose and Maggie, but for my money, the use of E.E. Cummings poems took this past the norm and into the quite enjoyable category.
If you're not a chick flick fan worth the viewing time.
If you are, well worth the entrance fee too.
Casablanca (1942)
Black, White simply dynamite.
This film is the greatest. If you haven't seen it. You haven't lived. If you have then it will instill items into places you never knew of with it's unmistakable blend of drama, fact and pure film joy. We all have a wish to visit our own Rik's place.....
