Die Wannseekonferenz (2022)
Sober and intelligent
A very sober, intelligent attempt to adapt into film the meeting where The Holocaust was launched. Historically informative and free from disturbing, unnecessary and distorting dramatic elements. The interpretation of this infamous group of people is as good as it gets. Maybe we don't feel close to the actual Eichmann and maybe the portrayal of Heydrich adds more depth than he actually possessed - he was probably quite one-dimensionally cold and arrogant. But this does not prevent the film from giving a credible account of the events and the different interests and ways of thinking and talking of the participants.
Huset (2023)
The bed bugs of Paris
Drama about prison life without any understanding of prison life. Characters and lines that only serve one purpose, abuse of actors: making actors look like bad actors. In effect a major dump into the soul of the nation. A nation home alone, not a grown up in sight to set us straight. I would prefer the bed bugs of Paris. If I give you a little bit of my blood, Fupz, if I let you live in my mattress and bite me in the legs at night, would you let them do the writing? You have the whole country in the palm of your hand it seems, please put us down instead of squeezing. You are hurting us, please stop!
Mindhunter (2017)
Arrogant beyond belief
An absolutely brilliant thriller!
And arrogant beyond belief to cancel it (or 'put it on indefinite hold') half way through leaving the audiance hanging!
Mank was a real bore, Mr. F. Just... get back to what you are good at.
Kastanjemanden (2021)
completely RIDICULOUS!!
There are too many things wrong with this series to cover in a review. You could write a 1000 pages about it and still only scratch the surface. One serious short coming that in it self is completely disqualifying: There is no plausible psychology, no pathology that you can ever imagine, no personal historie of trauma, no version of bad childhood, that would ever make anyone, however deviant and damaged, want to pursue such a silly and demanding and strenuous and nonsensical and constructed and impractical and..and..and completely RIDICULOUS modus operandi of killing people. Please Mr. Writer: Try reading for example some Thomas Harris for inspiration. You can't just write anything, like a child or like L. Ron Hubbard. Fiction does not mean you can disregard the real. You have to have some insight into, knowledge about, and respect for human nature and the way the world works.
QEDA (2017)
Voice over and out
It is difficult to make a good voice over. On the other hand, to make one as annoying as this is almost impressive. Also, it could be considered a form of child abuse to cast a child in a movie as bad as this.
Kriger (2018)
It is difficult to write
It is difficult to write good dialogue and establish credible, interesting characters. To accomplish it, you need both talent and inspiration.
Or else..... the result is fiction where people say things that people don't say, react in ways people don't react, do things people don't do.
Like most of the products from the contemporary Danish factory of drama this one will probably be fairly well received by the audiance and the critics.
The latter, at least, should know better. But in a small country with a very limited movie business maybe sometimes the right hand is a little too engaged and invested in what the left hand is doing?
Genetic Me (2014)
Engaging and instructive
Using the 'protagonist's' personal history and personality traits, and the challenges they have given rise to, to introduce and illuminate current theory of personality is a brilliant take that demonstrates the relevance of the theories and makes them easy to understand.
Operation Finale (2018)
Respect history
The story of Eichmann does not need dramatic elements added. The movie distorts history to make it more exciting. People will learn much less from watching it than they could have and should have.
Gräns (2018)
What if it was really real?
Zombies, vampires, trolls - John Ajvide Lindqvist seems to be asking himself, what if such things were real? how would they be? how would we react?
With his approach the creatures become relevant again, and we are reminded why they were brought to life in the first place.
And how fortunate that J.A.L.'s visions have fallen into the hands of such talented film makers who can realize them so masterfully on the screen!
Sharp Objects (2018)
Masterful
Masterful in every single frame. If you liked True Detective this might appeal to you as well. If you are looking for something to restore your faith in humanity you might want to watch something else.
High-Rise (2015)
Torture
You have to give this movie a chance. Like you have to give torture a chance.
Wind River (2017)
Wiseass
There can be a thin line between being wise and being a wiseass. People who have a rule of thumb for every situation in life and who like to share it, in every situation in life, are wiseasses, and having one of those as the main character in a movie makes it a little anoying to watch
Bridgend (2015)
Hands off my heart!
It is much worse when a heart surgeon messes up than when an accountant messes up.
If you want to deal with other people's sensitive issues you better be qualified for the task, or you will end up in a really awful mess.
Bridgend has beautiful images and sound, good actors that seem to have been directed well. All that does, is polish up something that is fundamentally flawed.
Word of advise to writer: The road to hell is paved with good intentions, so 1) get better at understanding other people's experience, or 2) write about something less sensitive or something much closer to your own personal experience*, or 3) let other people do the writing.
* Lack of experience with teenage misery, if we consider that mitigating circumstances, actually speaks to your benefit.
The Rain (2018)
A tiny speck of light
In episode 4, towards the end, the young soldier guy says: "What is happening?"
That is the first line spoken by any character in this show that doesn't sound like it was written by a child. Even in the darkest places there can be a tiny speck of light.
I, Daniel Blake (2016)
Social production of indifference
If people in whatever system, social, health care, education, can shit on you with impunity, because you are poor, sick, helpless, powerless, then they will, many of them. The people they are supposed to help are soon turned into enemies. It is like a mechanism. The personal, individual strength of the main characters and the relationship they build with each other is what pulls us through. Otherwise the movie would be unbearable.
Væbnet med ord & vinger (2018)
Poems can speak for themselves
Moving and well made documentary about the Danish poet Michael Strunge.
Unfortunately, the poems themselves are outshouted by noise and music and dramatic images and are often barely 'audible'. They would stand much stronger on their own.
But that is the only downside. Worth seeing for all the '80s clips and photos and especially for interviews with people who were close to Strunge.
