The Karen Carpenter Story (1989)
Pretty good for a TV biopic
Nice review by Tom Barrister. Just finished reading Little Girl Blue, very interesting biography. This movie leaves out a lot of details, and glosses over a few major moments in Karen's life. Specifically, the extent to which she went to hide her anorexia (as someone said she was the most honest person except she would lie like a trooper about her anorexia), her solo album which was criticized by Richard among others and scrapped, and finally her disastrous marriage to a gold digging liar. As for lots being filmed then scrapped because of the family, Richard was an executive producer and guess he was trying to protect the family, especially his mother. I read somewhere the family was sorry they helped make the movie because they think it wasn't fair in parts. IMHO the movie does a good job overall portraying the success, talent (that voice!) and tragedy of KC. Like Tom Barrister said in his review, a voice like that comes along every few decades.
ps my favorite song is Superstar. THAT VOICE!
John Carter (2012)
Very good science-fi action flick
Went with low expectations what with all the talk of the movie bombing at the box office. Do not understand why folks are staying away from this flick. JC is an epic science-fi action flick with great imagination. The movie is well scripted, well acted, beautiful on the big screen, 3d that fits the movie well and not used at all to shock viewers. It will almost certainly be out of theatres soon, so go asap for the 3d and digital experience. Too bad this is the end of the line for this story. When I think about other movie franchises with really crappy movies that stay alive, like Star Wars, well let's just say it ain't fair.
Night Court: Halloween Too (1985)
Hot Witch!
Night Court is a classic 80's wacky comedy.
It's the kind of show you can just mindlessly watch.
In this particular episode the cast really gets to let their hair down.
Markie Post. What can one say? Markie played her role to the tee.
A very pretty lady, in this episode she gets to show off her incredible beauty.
At the end of the episode, the whole cast is in their Halloween costumes. The whole thing is very funny.
But Markie in that revealing witch outfit, WOW! A stunning beauty.
I've always liked Night Court, but over the years this is the episode I always remember.
It was run recently, fortunately caught it.
Only 3 words left to say: THANK YOU MARKIE!
Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006)
Seems like everyone buys into shallow conspiracy theories (as if there is any other kind!)
Although thought provoking, the premise can be easily discredited: Japan is the second largest economy in the world. Japan is on the cutting edge of technology. Japan has no sovereign sources of oil, so they are not influenced by "big oil companies". If electric cars are so great, why hasn't Japan built them? Same goes for Korea, Germany, France, Italy, etc. The answer is electric cars are not so great. Yet. Battery technology is making great advances, it is quite possible in a few years these cars will be the answer. Of course, charging these batteries takes a great deal of energy, and in North America burning coal and natural gas (read: massive air pollution) is the major source of electricity right now. Once we wake up and follow France's lead - build nuclear for electricity - we will be off to the races. That's my take on it, over the next 25 years the combination of battery technology and the source of energy to charge them should do it. Right now wind and solar are great, but produce relatively small amounts of electricity - and are not always available (calm, cloudy days). These sources of energy can compliment nuclear. It can and will be done, but will take time. It will help if the environmental nuts and dummy politicians would get out of the way, but that's also going to be a long process. Listen folks, nothing is going to be perfect, and it's not going to happen overnight, but things will work out. And movies like this, although simplistic, probably help in that it gets the average person thinking and talking, always a good thing.
Dexter: It's Alive! (2007)
Dexter absolutely rocks!
Dexter is simply the best thing on television these days. Dark, funny, dramatic, GREAT acting, GREAT writing, it's got it all. The scene on the ocean floor with all the hefty bags is jaw dropping. The first show of season 2 has everything setup for the rest of the season. The character development is awesome, so many things happening, yet easy to follow the storyline (unlike that twisted piece of junk John From Cincinatti). Everyone in the Dexter family, keep up the great work! Surely the show will get more media and critical attention, just stay the course and the rewards will follow. Cannot wait to see what twists and turns are revealed in season 2.
