What Happens Later (2023)
Children Writing Reviews, This Was Not Meant For YOU!
This move was excellent for people who grew up with Meg being America's sweetheart. It is a romantic fantasy for grown people with nearly grown children. NOBODY has approached life with children who are on the cusp of making their own defining life choices and not looked back at their own formative years and ask "what if?" It isn't a regret. It's just another part of growing as a human being and this movie captures it in a fun and beautiful way. It's not life changing stuff, it's just growing and empathizing with someone else's different experience than your's was. Particularly someone who was close to you and then drifted away. I can't even tell you how many people in my past I wish I could have an encounter like this. Trust me. If you're Genx and are a parent, this is a must see.
Long story short, this is entertainment for adults in a world run by children.
The Retirement Plan (2023)
How do people not know?
How does nobody realize this is a comedy? It's absolutely absurd and hilarious from beginning to end. 5'4 Jackie Earle Haley is the mob boss.🤤 This is 1000% right in Cage's wheelhouse. IF you sleep on this it's your own fault now.😁 Drunk grampy Cage whose a retired assassin. Just watch it,trust me! Enter cast of mean, clumsy, and inept kill teams.🤣Settings in the Caribbean. Massively violent deaths. Stupud lots of fun. Cage machismo on 10 😉👊👍 Ok now I'm just filling in words to try and post this too the masses. 😁 Nothing in this movie would or even could happen, but that doesn't stop it from being an absolutely magnificent party!😉😁👊
The Idol (2023)
JUST WOW!
Let's go ahead and get the most obvious flaws out of the way first. The Weekend playing some club owner/mogul/scene daddy might be the most ridiculous thing I've seen in quite some time. This bad hair wearing suburban kid from what sounds like Canada is supposed to be an exotic attraction for a megarich young pop star?😄seriously? IT might have passed if he managed an alone meeting then had some hidden attributes. But no! HE JUST GOT CREEPIER!😂 Amy could have made this a compelling view into the trappings of youth and stardom from an under-appreciated female perspective and they turned it into another new starlet being naked vehicle. The irony.
1923 (2022)
This was the origin story that Yellowstone deserved.!
Obviously I am a huge fan of the show Yellowstone. It is a masterpiece of television. If you don't agree, this will mean nothing to you.
Now, if you are a fan of Yellowstone, or haven't. Seen Yellowstone for some reason, heare out.
1883 was OK. It had many good and bad qualities that left it just flat with the fans. Not a waste of time, but still lacking.
Here comes 1923! Holly Hell! Everything about this show is shaping up to be a short run massive award winner. It has the amazing story. It has the amazing talent. And it has the amazing settings of the early 20th century that is very neglected in media today.
Even if you have never seen Yellowstone and are even remotely a fan of modern westerners or adventure films that take place at the dawn of modern society, this is a MUST!
George & Tammy (2022)
It's ok.
First the brilliant. The acting talent is beyond stellar from every single character. And as far fetched and crazy as some might think the events are, I wholeheartedly believe that it is just a smidge of the true volatility that existed. It is the type of story operas where once written about.
All that being said, I wish they had put a little more weight on singing talent than they did acting talent. The true story is so compelling that lesser actors who could sing better was called for. Don't get me wrong, Jessica and Michael are very good singers. But they are attempting to perform some of the absolutely best known music in classic country music catalog that were performed by atleast one of the absolute greatest voices to to it. They don't even come close to pulling it off. Great respects to them for even trying but it was a swing and a miss.
I'll still probably watch the whole thing. It could have been SOO much better though.
Edit: I must edit my previous statements. Jessica Chastain was absolutely the perfect casting for this part. I absolutely bow my head to heard dedication to not only sing with a MS accent. But she got pretty damned close to dialog too.
I must unfortunately leave my previous rating in place because as much as I love and respect Michael Shannon as an actor and an artist, he doesn't capture the whine and heartache that made George Jones the king of Country.
1883 (2021)
Great production that is lacking in some plot aspects.
As far as I know I've seen everything Taylor Sheridan has done and all of it I have thoroughly enjoyed. Yellowstone in my opinion is a masterpiece. So I had very high hopes for the show that may have been a little too high. Cinematography is spectacular. There are some phenomenal actors, no need to point any of them out again. But for me where the show is lacking is that it is relying way to heavily on drawn out dialogue and is very short on drama or action. 90% of the show so far is them camping in-between legs of a momentous journey that it's self is rarely shown. This may or may not change as we are only four episodes deep. I certainly hope it does and I will adjust my rating accordingly as the season goes on. I certainly intend on watching all of it.
The biggest flaw in my opinion though, and really is what brought it down by three stars for me, is the daughter character. For me she makes it very hard to watch anytime she's on. She is a very bad actress. That wouldn't even be a big deal if it wasn't for the most terrible fake southern accent I have heard in a very long time. It's like someone lampooning what a fake southern accent from a 1950s antebellum movie sounded like. There are Australians out there that can do a better southern accent. Every time she does her little monologue at the beginning of the episodes it's like nails on a chalkboard. It is really quite unbearable and it's a shame. I'm not really sure why it was decided that this character would be the one who's perspective is the focus. I hate to be one of those people but she hasn't made any appearances in the little snippets on the current season of Yellowstone, so hopefully some tragedy befalls her very soon and she is no longer on the show.
Val (2021)
Are you people kidding me?!!
I honestly do not understand the comments/reviews / opinions that want to degrade this piece of art as some kind of vanity piece or justification or attempt to create a false narrative buy a narcissist.
So let's start with the obvious stuff. It takes a certain amount of narcissism to even have the confidence to attempt to be successful in an industry that is 100% based on outside opinions of your performance. It is a completely nother level of narcissism to actually be successful at said industry and push past everything in your sphere saying it is impossible odds, but knowing that they are wrong and you are right and actually be successful. That word narcissism is treated like a character flaw. But the mass majority of truly successful people on the planet possess it. Val Kilmer was not just successful at it but massively so.
Next let's examine the fact that integrity and valuing his art form over certain industry hierarchies or monitery factors enabled those who did value them over integrity sow a reputation for being difficult to handle. Guess what. People who don't have integrity or share your value system view you as difficult if you actually do have the integrity to stand by your principles. When you don't, you end up as a very talented actor doing anything for money like Nicholas Cage.
This is all happened before the internet and artists had a voice of their own capable of reaching the world , only needing an internet connection. The only side you got to hear back then was the side either willing to pay for it or willing to print the scandalous to sell ad space.
Then to top it off you take a man who at one time was maybe not the biggest box office draw, but within smelling distance of the Pinnacle. A man who nobody denies was a chameleon who could sink into any role and be convincing. An artist that most people still consider a mystery because fame was not the goal. A true artist. You take that man at the absolute most vulnerable time of his life, quite literally knocking on heaven's door, give him a voice to share his life and his answers to the mystery that he is. Then you want to say it is because of vanity? You seriously have self-confidence issues of your own.
Coming out of watching this and being completely moved, my only negative thought is the disappointment of not being able to see his One Man show based on The Life and times of Mark Twain. What footage of it they were able to include looked totally encapsulating and had it ever made it to Broadway I would put good money on the fact that it would have been a Tony winner.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
This is the DC universe!!
Okay I admittedly I'm not up to speed on everything that DC has put out regarding their proposed cinematic DC universe. I also am not a lifelong comic fanboy. I would be classified as a novice fan at best. And as much as I did enjoy the rawness and grit of Snyder's contributions, Gunn seems to get what DC comics were all about in my opinion. While Marvel comics always seemed the more gritty and dramatic contribution to me, DC always had more of a comedic undertone. I really believe that if DC embraces this it will be their ticket. This and Doom Patrol are clearly in the same cinematic universe. I don't know if Snyder is a fan of that masterpiece or not, but this film and that show fit together like a grilled nanner and peanut butter samich with bacon. It shouldn't work in theory but is totally epic in execution. Hopefully the success of both projects will influence DC's future.
Utopia (2020)
Huge missed opportunity!!!
I know oh, I know, pretty much all the bad reviews are coming from people who are fans of the original. The original really was that great. People who haven't seen the original are probably really going to like this show because even though it's a water down facsimile show the original the story is that awesome. I'm just now starting the first episode out of curiosity. I'm sure it will be watchable. Other than Sasha Lane it has some pretty good actors. So if you haven't or or have no opportunity to see the original it's probably worth a try
That being said the producers missed a great big huge opportunity. I would imagine even though shows say Amazon original, Amazon isn't actually producing the shows. They are procuring them from production companies and then Distributing them. And this Americanized version, just like many other Americanized versions of international art, is very likely put out by the same production company who put out the original. Now if the production company and Amazon had came together on giving the first two seasons of the original so a wider Amazon international release in conjunction with a third season of the original a very likely could have produced Amazons biggest hit to date. It would have brought on new fans who's simply haven't had access to the original. And it would have greatly pleased old fans who wanted more of the Amazing Story and show. Really is too bad that couldn't have happened.
As I said I'm just starting the new one but I'm already not having high hopes. The two biggest reasons are Sasha Lane trying to pull off such a complex character has Jessica Hyde and a new version of such an already devastatingly creepy character Arby. And they seem to have split Becky into two characters. Those two things are going to be some pretty big hurdles for me to get over.
Spoilers!
Edit: Nope! I'm out! It's terrible. I gave it an honest try. There episodes in they start acting happy and excited about the impending apocalypse like the Scooby do gang. Then Jessica Hyde murders one of them and takes them hostage. AND THEY ARE STILL EXCITED AND GLEE FULL TO HAVE A MYSTERY TO SOLVE!!!! Not save the world, solve a mystery. It is an extremely stupid show.
Ratched (2020)
Visually stunning, substantially nauseating!
Visually it is a masterpiece. It is truly a work of art. Every thing about it. The sets. The props. The wardrobe. The colors. The cars. The locations. Everything. If I was forced to pick out one negative to the visual aspect of the show it would be the color saturation scenes. They were just a little too extra. Could have achieved the same effect with maybe lighting or filters without it just being a complete wash of color and I think it may have been slightly more pleasing.
Even the soundtrack was pretty amazing.
Everything else though, and I do mean everything, was just abysmal. Like most of Murphy's other projects it was trying so hard to be so many different things, but it utterly failed at all of them. Sometimes he pulls it off. Not with this one . It's a disaster. I really don't even know where to begin. I guess with the suspense. There was none. You could clearly make out that they were trying for it. They never even got close. If there was any, it was the suspense of waiting for some hint of character motivation to try and understand why the characters are doing any of the randomly asinine things they are doing or saying. Usually, even when a character is doing something asinine or even utterly and ridiculously unbelievable, unrealistic thing you can manage to grasp the cause of such actions. Not here. That brings us to the campiness. It is quite obvious they are shooting for it. They missed. Camp is at it's core an over exaggerate, bloated, cringly over the top satire. But since it is so devoid of any reason for why what is happening is happening, it ends up just being WTF.
Then of course there is the plot. Lack of one actually. It's so bad that plot holes are pointless because it is all just one big hole.
That's just scratching the surface. I could go on and on.
Letterkenny (2016)
Just wow!
I'm from the Southern United States and what you might call lower middle aged. Born in the mid 70's. I have for some time been seeing clips of Letterkenny in my suggested views on the YouTube. I eventually clicked on enough of them and had enough chuckles to try and figure out where this was coming from. I am what I would consider an old school pirate. I remember Napster and later Limewire. I only say this to give context. I have found that outside the U.S. programming has to rely much much more one writing and talent than budgets thrown at movies and programming here. I am admittedly still guilty of the American stereotype of only speaking one language so I tend to seek out stuff from U.K., Australia, Canada. This is to say I watch A LOT of stuff most Americans have no idea about. Ok, back on topic. So I go looking for this show and it's hard to find. Mostly YouTube clips. Those are pretty funny. But once I was able to find whole episodes and seasons, holly s*it!. It is absolute brilliance! The silly goofy crap you see in clips, put in context of the half hour episode is gold. I am only 5 in of the first season and it is so brilliantly hilarious that I felt compelled to come make a plea to people to seek out this show. This should be available on Prime at the very least. I emplore anyone who is a fan of satirical humour to seek more of this. It is up there whit Monty Python and Mel Brooks, it is honestly that brilliant.
Outlaws and Angels (2016)
Absolute must see!!!
This is an absolute must see for anyone who is a fan of the late 60's early 70's nihilistic gritty style of film making, westerns in particular. This film could have easily been released in 1973.
As much as I liked Hateful Eight, I believe Mollner far better captures the B-movie "grindhouse" quality that Tarantino likes to strive for. Everything from the Kodak film stock, to the Panavision cameras, to the sound track is just absolutely authentic. Even the script is more authentic, and in my opinion superior.
The whole cast is amazing. Every single part down to the smallest was played to perfection. The standouts by far being Francesca Eastwood, Teri Polo, and Chad Michael Murray. Murray captures the brutal anti-hero of few words excellently. Eastwood is amazing as the tortured youngest daughter. Polo gives a jaw dropping performance as the bible thumping lunatic mother.I honestly didn't even recognize her.
If I had to pick one flaw in the film it would be the sporadic voice over done by Wilsons character. It just felt out of place and pointless. It happens very little though so it is a very minor flaw.
The film is a masterpiece that is a true representation of a time when film making was an art form. I look forward tho seeing more of what Mollner can create.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
A very Excellent Surprise
I knew from the crew of this movies credits that it was going too be funny. But this was a very unexpected surprise. I have enjoyed all of Jason Segel's performances too date, and really enjoy his character on the show how i met your mother. I did not know how ever , until after seeing this film, that he wrote the screen play. I am very impressed! his endearing charecture of a heart broken 20 something is exactly on. And Mila Kunis, wow! Any red blooded man would fall in love with her down too earth , beautiful character. This is up there with the romantic comedies of legend , even if thats wouldn't suit the makers too describe it that way. The hillar5ious awkwardness, the lovable characters, and the amazing setting make for a classic!
