Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)
By far the best Ewoks movie
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie over and over as a child. Back then in the 80s we didn't have cable or VCR, we had what you call a BETA tape. You'd be lucky if it worked and luckily our Ewoks tape worked a lot during its course.
Anyway the movie starts off giving us a hint of what happened to our protagonist's parents. It gives us also a mere glimpse of the beast as well. It then flash forwards us into what happened to the 2 kids, Cindel and Mace. Cindel is a very cute and friendly kid, whereas her older brother Mace is protective and seemingly narrow-minded.
Throughout the movie you'll probably develop a distaste for Mace, and deep fondness for Cindel and the Ewoks.
A great family movie, they re-mastered this on DVD and I got it as soon as I could. Brings back great memories, without the rewinder.
Maximum Thrust (2003)
If you don't like porn, don't watch it.
I didn't know what the movie was all about, I thought it was just some plain racing like The Fast and the Furious, and if I am not mistaken, this was released by Universal or something. The movie starts with some one liners, but you don't really see any action pertaining to street racing. The only action you are going to see is the action between a male and a female character. I wish they categorized this more clearly. Having had watched porn before (who hasn't?) I can easily notice that the settings weren't exactly "cheap" but porn settings nonetheless. The lighting was good and the acting wasn't all that bad. There are no close up s of the genital areas and no "cum shots". Kind of annoying really, but at the same time, it is also entertaining.
Gabal (2005)
Better than I expected
At first I felt annoyed because finally they did a movie out of long black hairs, which was prevalent in a lot of Asian horror movies after "the ring" came out. Titles include The Dollmaster, The Phone, Ju-on or The Grudge, Tale of Two Sisters and so and so forth.
The story is about a young woman who has gone past chemotherapy and is currently trying to live the life she never had. Her elder sisters life was also affected not only because her sisters terminal illness but because she is the only left to take care of her younger sister and she cant go on with life and get married and start a family.
Chi-Hyon, the elder sister, decided to buy a wig for her younger sister, Suh-Hyon, who almost automatically improved overnight after wearing the wig. Then the trouble started.
The film was also a bit longer than I expected, all of which were enough to let the audiences feel empathy for Suh-Hyon (the cancer survivor) as well as get mesmerized by her long silky black hair, which of course has the lead role in the film. Chi-Hyon, her elder sister, was also portrayed as ever caring and slightly on a martyr level, leaving the audiences to feel annoyed and at the same time pity Suh-Hyon.
This movie is internationally called "The Wig".
Dead Doll (2004)
Cute movie.
This movie isn't so bad especially since they didn't mess it up with CGI effects, puppets are eternally greater. Romi Koch is beautiful but her voice is kind of irritating. The movie is too fast paced to be boring and it doesn't get spoiled by lame acting. Surprisingly enough, the actors here never really failed to deliver what their characters should be. It's not that weird either, not too gory, but isn't predictable enough to be boring. I believe it even has scenes wherein it makes you think "this" happened but after a few minutes you'll really know what really happened. Romi Koch totally looks like a mannequin or a doll, I wonder how much she really weighs???:) I was surprised the country of it's origin is USA, I was watching it and thinking it was filmed somewhere in Europe. Overall I give this movie 6 stars, its not so bad...and bestows a lot to its genre.
Schindler's List (1993)
I have seen this on a video, 10 years after it was released.
My uncle who came all the way from a rural area to downtown Chicago and showed off his Schindlers List tickets to us, the night of my graduation party, I was 12. Because this movie was banned in the Philippines for frontal nudity we had to wait it out until the video came out. At first I didn't expect much, was even disappointed it was in black and white. The movie is so detailed, so graphic. It seems to tell you all the secrets that you will never read in any history book. The detailed part of other people's lives is what captured me. Most particularly about Amon Goethe and his Jewish love interest, which was bitterly ironic. He chose to even let her go in the end. While it was creatively written, it doesn't focus on Hitler at all. In fact I do not remember Hitler's face being shown in the movie. The movie is all about Herr Oskar Schindler. The other good part about this movie is that one can politely assume not ALL Germans are Nazis. Oskar Schindler had a very big heart for ladies as well as Jews. Because it was focused on Oskar Schindler, it doesn't attract contempt from people who think otherwise. It captures almost all sides of the war, from the Jews point of view and from the German's point of view. Never a dull moment.
Little Often Annie (1984)
Oh well.
This is actually a soft core porn flick, my neighbor has a beta max copy of it and we all sit down to watch it one time. The lead girl at first loses her pet cat, then everyone she asks want to help her but they take advantage of her first then refuse to help her after that. I am mildly shocked I am the first one to input a comment on this, I actually think this movie was tastefully made, but of course low budget and the storyline will make you roll your eyes every 30 minutes. Good for boys though, because beyond all the nudity there really is nothing else. The sound effects are also too 80's to begin with, but then again this was set in the 80's. This movie also reminds me of an accidental porn flick I saw which I thought was an 80's version of "Clueless" which was "California Valley Girls".
The Prince & Me (2004)
Brilliantly portrayed and stays close to a more realistic approach
First off I would like to say Julia Stiles and Prince Edvard portrayed the characters so beautifully and with justice. Julia Stiles exudes the girl next door charm and innocent appeal. Prince Edvard, or Luke Mably, has an aura of sexy gorgeous prince-like appeal which are how most princes seem to be. This movie is amazing because it does not give off a feeling of cheesiness and surrealism, there are even no boring moments, everything seems a very whirlwind except it will never disappoint you like most movies in this concept do.
I am extremely impressed by the way it was directed as well as the acting skills of the characters, they portrayed their roles so well the movie seems so real it wont give you the feeling that your leg is being pulled. So good that it stays faithful to the realistic world of princes, and the annoying paparazzi.
At the end of the movie you will have a nagging feeling, I myself was thinking if she gives up her dreams and hopes for this gorgeous prince, what if he just cheats on her and what will then become of the "happily ever after" shes been dreaming about? I leave it up to you to see, and I assure you it wont disappoint you one way or another. It doesn't end like other "royal" movies do! This movie has never failed to captivate me and has disappointed me in a "I wish I never saw this movie" feeling.
Also I would like to point out not too long ago the real Prince of Denmark married a commoner from Australia. She was beautiful as he was handsome.
The Forgotten (2004)
Riveting, captivating....E.T. gone bad!
I've had very severe doubts about watching The Forgotten but after seeing it in the shelves at the mall for some time I decided to buy it, and boy was it a neat surprise! The story starts off as boring, and kind of confusing because not much detail was given about what really happened to Sam, the protagonists son, who happened to disappear for some reason unbeknownst to his mom or to us, the viewers. Then you meet Lauren's dad, Ash, who at first cant remember anything then when he does remember, this is where it really got me, when he remembered, thats when you sit at the edge of your seat. Then its just climax all the way (for lack of better term hehe) until the mellowing down of our heartbeats towards the ending of the movie. Then we all realize who existed, who didn't exist, what really happened. This movie really makes you think, a real mind boggler and a must see!
Little Black Book (2004)
Incredibly raw and realistic....a MUST for every girl in an uncertain relationship!
After seeing the DVD for several months I finally decided to buy it, albeit knowing I was going to hate it since it gave close description of my present relationship. Brittany Murphy really made it this time, I was really in high doubts of her giving justice to the character but she caught me off guard. I never really liked Ron Livingston especially after what he did to Carrie in Sex and the City (I cant help not associating him to Carrie!) but right now, in this film, I just realized I do not like him at all even more! He could've done worse though, but him being slightly meekly ignorant of his girlfriend's feelings made the movie a whole lot realistic and not the slightest bit cheesy. I cant wait to show this to my boyfriend.
I also hate to admit this movie made me cry, and I NEVER cry. This pushes a lot of buttons in a girls life especially girls who are in a relationship wherein they are not sure about the certainty of their relationship but just hanging on, trying to "rationalize" all the "red flags" in their relationship, (quoting from another movie). I give this movie a 5 for great story and performance, and another 5 for succeeding in making me cry!
Cruel Intentions 3 (2004)
Definitely better than Manchester prep!
Cruel Intentions 1...then 2....then came three! I was surprised that they released a sequel to Manchester prep, which I didn't enjoy much due to the fact that it was only in the END of the film that we get shocked, this movie shocked me at least 4 times, I guess because the plot caught me off guard (many times), but in this case the ending part wasn't as spontaneous as part II. At the first part of this film, you might get annoyed at the so called tackiness and predictability of the characters, it might even come across as boring, but when you get to the middle of it you might be shocked as the twist of their schemes goes further insane. However there are more nude scenes in this movie that could've been more subtle. Overall I give this film a B- for good entertainment and good delivery!
The Stuff (1985)
Great, entertaining movie
In contrary to the previous comment, I have to say this was a great movie. Who would ever come up with an idea that ice cream would be the instrument for our doom? What person would ever come up with tricking his parents that he was eating it, but he was actually eating shaving cream? When I was a child, after watching this movie, I had the mad rush of curiosity and tried it myself..Yuck!
Anyway finally, where else can we find great horror, suspense with humor without the hell of CGI?;) This is why I love 80's movies so much and I highly recommend it for a Friday night with pizza.
Say It Isn't So (2001)
Modern age comedy!
I just saw this movie about ten minutes ago and I have to say it really made my dawn! Chris Klein and Heather Graham sparks romance on screen like they've never shown before. Chris Klein,a dead ringer for Keanu Reeves, delivers a stunning performance.
This film is absolutely funny, most of the scenes are "ridiculously hilarious". I recommend this movie for Chris Klein fans.Even better perfomance than American Pie I and II!
The Brotherhood 2: Young Warlocks (2001)
One of Decoteau's finest! It's like a movie catalogue of Joe Boxers Models
I was surprised to find out, after watching the movie, that David Decoteau has made countless movies before this. Not to mention the puppet master movies I loved as a kid. Anyway, I wont be like other critics and say that David Decoteau does nothing but fill his movies with eye candy actors/actresses,I even wonder where he gets these people, they simply look good on screen although we can see very well that theyre a bit amateur and that theyre first timers. But where else do big stars get their first breaks? On B movies of course! The Brotherhood 2:Young Warlocks, is a story about a new guy in a small private school. Sure he gets harassed, almost raped in the bathroom, almost killed but he sure does get by. He has his own 'gang',who seem to be a bunch of lame ass idiots at first but then seems to gain "strength".The lighting on this movie isn't adequate, thus giving off the eerie sense that it is literally "dark" and foreboding. Also the make up effects arent that good. But who cares since you wont be seeing monsters until the final parts. As a big B movie fan I highly suggest you to borrow this on vcr and get ready for a night of funny, hilarious and not to mention serious eye popping.
Bruiser (2000)
A Romero original.
They recently showed this movie here, and since I have a dead serious knack for Romero films, I had to go all the way to the movies just to watch it.
Henry is the kind of guy who has the lowest self esteem in the universe.Actually its not even Milo's fault that Henry's wife had an affair with him. The guy just simply cant hold a normal relationship without degrading himself.Henry is just so pathetic he couldn't stand up for himself and allows people to walk all over him. Time came and when he realized he was about to explode, he suddenly found himself one morning with a blank mask, and this opened a gateway of hell for him, ready to lower his inhibitions and strike whoever attempts to stand in his way. Although annoyed as I was, I highly recommend this movie for Romero fans if you're in for a night of George Romero movies.
