Antebellum (2020)
I never write reviews but...
...I can't understand the low rating. I was almost put off the film by the bad reviews and so went in with low expectations, and maybe that was a good thing because I wasn't expecting too much (no spoilers in this review). I've rated it 10 because I feel the low ratings are unwarranted and could put people off - overall I think it is probably a 7.5.
I wonder if people are disappointed because they were drawn in by the 'horror' label and comparisons to 'Us' and 'Get Out' - this film is NOT your typical horror (the pacing is quite relaxed, there aren't any jump scares etc) and should be promoted as more of a mystery / thriller - if you are looking for a proper horror film then this won't be what you want.
I found the story interesting but just as a warning, it is quite hard to watch as the content is distressing and I did have to stop it a couple of times, but I think the message is very important and I'm glad the directors were bold enough to do this.
Please do yourself a favour and don't read anything about the story beforehand: just watch it with an open mind, don't expect too much and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Live Freaky Die Freaky (2006)
A bold movie with an all-star cast
The only reason I bought this film was because of the cast (mainly Davey Havok!) and I must admit that when I watched it for the first time I was shocked by the sexual content and apparent disrespect for the Manson murders.
Director John Roecker claims he doesn't mean to offend, although I'd find it hard not to be if I was anything to do with the subjects. Victim Sharon Tate's name has been changed to Sharon Hate, and Charlie Manson becomes Charlie Hanson, but all this is a weak attempt at detaching them from the real victims.
All this said, though, I admit that the movie is enjoyable if not thought about too deeply! There are a few comical moments, though they are mainly crude. Not for the faint hearted...
