The Female Brain (2017)
Tries too hard to show how smart it is
While I can appreciate taking a different route to a "men and women" comedy, this movie relies too hard on the narration explaining the science behind almost every action in the movie.
There are smart movies, and movies that try to prove how smart they are - and unfortunately this falls hard into the latter. Nobody is a fan for lumpy expositional dialogue, and this only takes it one step further behind not only explaining what a character is thinking at any time (even in moments so small as answering the phone) but the reason why they fee what they feel.
There is a good movie in here somewhere, and the actors do try to elevate the material - but it feels overall half-cooked and rushed.
On the positive, Cecily Strong is a true highlight (when is she not?)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Simply incredible
What an amazing emotional film. Performances are all top notch, and the story is so moving. Tim Robbins as the quiet and introverted Andy gives us a look at performances to come, and Morgan Freeman proves as always he can be counted on to give an authoritative performance. While the name "Stephen King" attached to a film might suggest something in the horror genre, this simple tale of men in prison is so much more. The sublime moments, while small move so much. And the character Brooks deserves special mention too, simply moving. Frank Darabont has created something with this film, and it will stand as one of (if not THE) greatest films ever made for quite some time.
