Goosebumps (2023)
Not bad, can't make everyone happy
Only a few episodes in but I feel it's really not bad. It's a fresh take on a 30+ year old book series, so if that keeps it alive for new generations, I'm all for it! I see a lot of reviews mad that it's not like the 90s series, but if it was, people would be mad that they tried to make it just like the original. It's not an anthology series like the books or original show, rather an arc across a series with different books as the source of the "big bad." There's a lot of slang and behavior that feels forced but try rewatching any teen movie from the 90s....it's not much better! Its an enjoyable enough way to pass the time as long as you don't compare it to your nostalgia.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Had potential
I am six episodes in and so disappointed. The actors are great. I really like the woman playing She Hulk. I like the idea of the fourth wall breaks. I like the rest of the cast. Some jokes land. But I don't know anyone who watches Marvel to see what it's like for a person with superpowers to live a normal life. And I watch these movies/shows to escape the misery of trying to be a female in the professional world, but every episode of this is SO heavy handed with the ultra-feminism. Every guy is scummy. Every conversation between women is talking about how annoyed they are by men. Any action or story is peppered in-between talking about how oppressed women are. And her big bad is a diva mad about beauty products? Talk about stereotypes. It has the potential to be something really great and I feel like the writing failed them.
Dragon Age: Absolution (2022)
Not amazing but watchable
I wanted to love this. But I had my doubts the second I heard the Qunari character described as "bubbly" in an article. The characters are generally forgettable, but it's still a fun animated fantasy show. I just don't know that it's a great Dragon Age installment. The premise is generic, though I do like the nods to the games without making anything canon quite yet from Inquisition (even referring to the Inquisitor as "they" to avoid canonizing the player from DAI).
It's missing the off-the-cuff comedy and banter the games have, and I'm only a few episodes in but I wasn't really hooked on the generic "palace heist" story line. I'm hoping it gets better.
