Larry Crowne (2011)
It's What It's Not
It's anyway nice to see Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts riding on scooter together. But it's full of tiny beautiful details which I think went unnoticed by some weary eyes.
This is Tom Hanks all over with his benign vision and his simplicity. At a point I almost wondered how would the society be like if half of the movies made in the world were like this; to have drug addicts giving a thought to cross equator travels and people picking up the out-thrown garbage, and no cussing.
Like a reminder of the genre, or may be of the pure film making art.
It's what it's not that makes it what it is. Larry Crowne. Thanks Hanks.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
When I told my 5 years old niece that Harry Potter is just a story, she started crying.
I'm not really willing to give much details- rhymes & reasons regarding this film, because I know that those who have seen the previous five will go for this one just the same. My only little emphasis here: Do Watch It.
I found it really great after being disappointed by a line of mega budget movies- Wolverine...Angels & Demons...Terminator Salvation and Transformers 2.
Well about the Half Blood Prince: If you liked all other HP movies, you'll certainly like this one too. If you are a faithful reader and used to find faults in the movies, you'll find some here too. But the point is that if you, for at least a minute, think about the hard work and dedication it must require to bring this thing onto the silver screen, with all its charm and ideas intact, you'll find it inevitable to appreciate the team that makes it possible. And I believe they'll be holding at least half a dozen golden statues in 2012, if not sooner. LOTR had its three years. HP has its decade!
Because though we know it's a huge business for some, "Harry Potter" is undoubtedly one of the greatest fictions ever created. So, take your children to the theatre, but don't forget to buy them the books.
To me HPHBP comes second in rank. Prisoner of Azkaban still remains my fav.
P.S. – Not to believe in what is impossible, is in fact impossible.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
India is not Brazil.
Shocked! This movie has won 4 Golden Globes. It is crowned high up in Top 250(!) What the hell is wrong with everyone? Who are these critics?
From the very beginning this film "smelled" City of God. It seems clear that the writer/director had that masterpiece in mind(as many people here have noticed) while making this mere entertainer.
I'm Indian and I know this country to the core. This film not only lacks the native flavor it also gives way to some unpardonable medley. It just sounds ridiculous when slum people are speaking English(Slangs in Hindi!)- that makes not a single character in this film something that an intellectual may approve.
Evenif you look at it as a great piece of story-telling, there are better ones. Everybody knows. Ask David Fincher!
Storyline is not great, flawed actually. Music is good, but A.R.Rahman has given hundreds of better scores. Cinematography is superb. 6/10. No less. Never more.
If this flick happens to win the best film Oscar, I would very much like to say "Something is wrong." Seriously.
Roadside Romeo (2008)
Brilliant
Disney goes Bollywood! This is a light-hearted funny movie with top notch animation sequences. The script is fantastic.. ideas innovative. . music n sound effects are fluent.. altogether the film is very entertaining and enjoyable.
I saw some people at theater stepping back as they realized this was a total Kid-Movie..scram..well what's wrong if you become a kid again for less than 2 hours in the darkness of the theater! Besides, it also reminds you of Godfather!
Most of the dialogs and comedy are Bollywood-Type that one not so familiar with Hindi movies might not fully understand though. But dogs are universal after all! Go watch this little cute movie with your family.
P.S. There is nothing satirical.
Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
Beautifully made Cinemetic Marvel.
Finally, the highly anticipated movie is out in the theatres, and I'm sure I'm not being hasty, nor am I hesitating in saying that this film will be remembered for years to come. Again, for years to come.
Despite of the ridiculous objections some people in India have produced against it, this film gives a magnificent look on the great many variations of the history and people of India, and above all, successfully captures the essence of the lost culture.
Hrithik Roshan seems to be the only Indian actor who could have played the role of Emperor Akbar. Great performance! It was predictable though. He changed the way he smiles, his gait, and even has worked a lot on his voice. Bravo, man!
Aishwarya, as Jodhaa Bai, is nice. It's, as I think, her kind of role. She should be doing more such kind of roles rather than going out wandering for dumping hammers like "The last legion" and "The mistress of spices"...
Ashutosh Gowarikar, the real hero of the film, has done it again. His diligence is worth appreciation. I'm really waiting for his next which I'm convinced now should be equally thoughtful, or even better.
Brilliant photography, and fascinating music by A.R.Rahman fill in the rest of the part, a bit long though. However, there is no need to compare this film to any other epics like "Lagaan" or even the milestone "Mughal-E-Azam".. This film is defined in itself. Not only the love story, it also gives some importance to the multi-dimensional personality of Akbar, and also, the simplicity is not crushed down by brutality, like in most of the Hollywood epics.
Go with just a little empty corner in your mind, and it will definitely find a place there.
El verano del potro (1989)
Simple...Sensible...Sweet
Simplicity. This is something that most of the films lack, and a very few contain thoroughly. I saw SUMMER OF THE COLT on T.V and loved it despite of its bad English dubbing.
This movie reminded me of my childhood days when we kids used to visit Grandpa's home in villege on summer vacations. This movie shows all the same.. nothing very important happens but the kids just end up learning something about life and love. As simple as that.
The performances are fine, especially Alexandra London Thompson is remarkable. I almost fell in love with her. Nice photography, sweet background score.. it's all there. I think this movie is underrated here.. and that's what made me write this comment. Watch it if you have chance, it's really lovely.
How Green Was My Valley (1941)
How Pure Was This Movie!
John Ford was one of the greatest directors the world ever saw, and this truly remarkable(though overlooked, unfortunately!) film does nothing but strengthens that fact. Rich with love and beauty, this film will always be one of the most beautiful family films of all time.
Wonderful cinematography, enchanting music and great characters evidently fit the film to height. Maureen O'Hara in the role of a loving sister and an obedient daughter is fantastic. Donald Crisp(Mr.Morgan) is amazing as a responsible father and coal-miner. But the one who wins the toss is Roddy Mcdowall in the role of Huw Morgan, the youngest of all brothers. What a charming performance! I can never forget his shy face when he finds himself (innocently) in love with his elder brother's fiancée.. it's just one among a lot of beautiful sequences in this film.. like "never forget to say 'Bless you!' when you see one sneeze.
I've never seen such beautiful things in movies made before or after this 1941 Oscar winner. Highly recommended to all those who love to watch the films with moral qualities and virtues.
How can anyone not love this movie?
