One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Quite a disappointment having read the book
The book was extraordinary and the screenplay did not do it justice. Acting was good but not exceptional and that may have been the result of the poor script.
Best as with most Hollywood movies inspired by books to avoid reading the books as it will raise ones expectations to a level that the movies are not likely to meet.
It was a good vehicle for Nicholson who does bring an extra dimension of craziness to his roles and he has helped many a mediocre film. But his performance does not cover for the many gaps in the characters in the movie.
It continues to amaze me how much money is spent to make a movie and to publicize it and the reluctance to spend enough on the people creating the screenplay. Some directors are smart enough to toss the first script and wait for a better one as with Mike Nichols but most will accept garbage.
The New Range Wars (1991)
Excellent film covering the destruction caused by cattle ranchers
The film shows in great detail the damage done to public lands by cattle ranchers. The film accurately shows cattle eroding stream banks and converting fertile grassland into barren desert.
The National Cattlemen's Association threatened a boycott and as result PBS and Audubon caved in and stop showing the film. PBS stopped showing any films from this producer so as to avoid any controversy in the future.
These organizations are not alone as the Sierra Club now promotes "green ranching" which is on par with "clean coal". The Nature Conservancy continues to run cattle on the lands it is managing and not halted the destruction of the land and the loss of wildlife habitat.
King Richard (2021)
Completely false portrayal of the father
Best to consider how Sabrina Williams views her father:
Sabrina claims her father was a serial cheater whom she believes has several children scattered across the country, telling The Sun, "I know there's more siblings, I was told between fifteen and nineteen all over the place, from LA to Louisiana."
"My mom always argued with my dad about his affairs, he was a serial cheat. I remember that was always the main thing they'd talk about. He is a selfish man, lives only for himself, he just uses his kids to get what he needs," she added. "He's not a dad, he was just a sperm donor."
When Sabrina was eight, she claims Richard abandoned the family after telling her he was going to the store to buy her a bicycle. "But once he left, within a year, we became very poor, she continued. "There wasn't always meals on the table. We went downhill. My mom became stressed out with six kids, trying to provide for us, she became aggressive."
As Sabrina's mother turned abusive, she only recalls hearing from her father twice after he moved out, including once when she was 10 and a second time while she was in college.
"In my teens, I was always thinking about suicide," Sabrina admitted. "I tried it once, it was always with me, and it was about my dad, I had mental health issues. Somehow, I got hold of my dad through a relative and asked for $1,000 to pay some of the college bill at Hope Christian University. He said he'd only give me the money as a loan. That's when I knew he was an a-hole."
"After college, I was done with my dad," she added. "He had never paid any child support and all he wanted to give me was a loan."
