The Godfather (1972)
How Did I Not See This Sooner?!
This was one of those films I was 'not allowed to stay up for' when I was much younger, but having received the DVD box set for Xmas, I watched all three on consecutive nights.
What talent! What a story! What cinematography! How did I miss this in my teens and twenties??
For me, one of the greatest surprises was having a look at early performances of great talent that started careers... Robert Duvall was already well-known, and this cinched him. James Caan - one of my favourites -and this showed me why - again. Pacino -I admit, I was never tha impressed, and wondered what the fuss was about....then I saw 'The Godfather'.
So many have tried to follow it - so few succeeded.
Fantastic stuff. Deserves to be where it is in cinema history.
Someone Like You... (2001)
A Very Poor Title on a Pretty Good Film
This film was released to video in the UK as 'Animal Attraction' - what a terrible title! I don't know what made me pick it up, but the cast was sufficient to ensure my afternoon's entertainment with a box of chocolates.
Definitely a chick-flick, and a surprisingly enjoyable one.
The cast was good, the story was light and predictably frothy - but solidly fun.
It reminded me a LOT of Bridget Jones - and it was just what I needed on my own with nothing to do. Might not watch it again, but it was entertaining, and that was the point of making it.
The Man Who Cried (2000)
A cinematography masterpiece
This is one of those really beautifully shot films that tugs at the corners of the mind with amazing camera work. The actors can hardly be faulted (though Christina Ricci does tend to always look a little bit angry and confused in every role...), though the story does plod along.
A 'slice-of-life' film of the life-in-a-day kind - it was very good one evening with a glass of wine when my brain did not demand to be 'entertained'. Just allow yourself to be swept along with the moment - if you like that kind of thing.
Autumn in New York (2000)
Okay, so it wasn't the worst film ever....
I don't like Winona Ryder. I don't like Richard Gere. So, in a twisted way, I thought I might find this film interesting. Weepie? Not really. We know what is going to happen to Charlotte (Ryder), and by the end of the film, I admit I was glad.
Watchable, but no chemistry. Every kissing scene is like a badly played panto moment - she's eating his face off while he stands there, lips closed, unmoved. It irritated me.
As others have commented, it is cinematically gorgeous though, and made for a good afternoon flick.
Cats & Dogs (2001)
Wanted to like it, but couldn't
This was one of those films I really, REALLY wanted to like, but it was just not going to happen, from about five minutes in. Usually I can sit through any children's or family film, but this one really 'bit the biscuit'. The script was dumb, the story undeveloped and the actors - they must be embarrassed. Skip it... or put it on and then walk away. Coming back later, you won't have missed a thing.
