Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Ghostbusters Afterlife
This movie turned out to be different than what I expected and that is actually good. Jason Reitman (son of Ivan Reitman) wrote and produced what some would call a "next generation" Ghostbusters film instead of simply having it be a remake of the original. People looking forward to seeing Ackroyd and Murray in their Ghostbuster roles may wonder where the heck those people are when they don't show up until the end of the film. But that's OK. McKenna Grace (Phoebe), Paul Rudd (Mr. Grooberson) and Finn Wolfhard (Trevor) carry this movie along in a fun, family friendly manner. Newcome Logan Kim (Podcast) is hilarious in his role.
The tribute to deceased Harold Ramos (Egon Spendler) at the end of the movie makes this film worth seeing for that alone.
The Front Runner (2018)
The ups and downs of Gary Hart
This film tells the true story of the presidential campaign by Senator Gary Hart (D-Colorado) in 1988.
Excellent acting performance by Hugh Jackman as the title character. The script was reviewed by Gary Hart himself and Hart approved of the film, particular its portrayal of his wife through all the drama.
Worth watching by anyone who is a follower of politics.
The obvious question that comes to mind is how could Hart be judged so harshly in 1988 for "womanizing" and yet Bill Clinton gets handled less severely just 4 years later....
Taken (2008)
A good Liam Neesom film
Action packed with an interesting story line. Liam Neesom portrays a former CIA agent who goes to Europe to rescue his teenage daughter from terrorists who kidnapped her. A bit unrealistic but fun nonetheless. Plus it contains the now famous Liam Neesom movie quote:
"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money... but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it - I will not look for you, I will not pursue you... but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you... and I will kill you."
Army of the Dead (2021)
Yuck. Overdone zombie flick.
I am not sure why I watched this one. Zombie films have been coming out in hordes since the popularity of "The Walking Dead". But when I saw topless showgirl zombies from Las Vegas in this one, I knew the film was going to be bad. Seriously, find another topic to do a film on. Yuck.....
The Social Network (2010)
Good story about the formation of "Facebook"
I like biography related films so this one hit home with me, Jesse Eisenberg is excellent as Mark Zuckerberg in this film. Hopefully, the film is reasonably accurate in the telling of the details behind "Facebook".
Holmes & Watson (2018)
A light hearted farce
The movie was not one that I would typically watch. But I like both actors and decided to borrow it from my local library to see if my DVD player can play Blue Ray discs (it can). Most jokes failed to score with me but several did cause a laugh. Not a bad film if the viewer likes Ferrell and Reilly. Just not a favorite for me.
Stan & Ollie (2018)
An interesting telling of the final performance days of Laurel and Hardy
A well done film. The transformation of John C. Reilly into Oliver Hardy was stunning. Reilly and Coogan did a realistic portrayal of the two comedians in this film. My only disappoint was the rather abrupt ending to the film.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Godzilla: A King Disappointment
I saw advertising for this movie last year but never got around to seeing it in the theater. Glad I save my money and just borrowed the DVD from my local library. A real disappointing film. Kind of a "Jurassic Park" version of monsters where humans get involved with INTENTIONALLY bringing dormant monsters back to life. It wasn't a good idea for dinosaurs in Jurassic Park and guess what, it's not a good idea in this film.
I watched the movie primarily because Bradley Whitford was in it. I really like his acting work in past projects but he is terrible in this film. He is just a wize cracking scientist who's only purpose is to tell the viewers what will happen next in the film.
Weak acting, unrealistic plot and special effects that are ridiculous. I will be generous and give the film a "3:. No wonder why this film was a box office disappointment.
Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House (2017)
Mark Felt: The Conflicted Man
A nicely done biography on Mark Felt (aka, "Deep Throat") and his involvement in exposing the Watergate scandal. Liam Neeson does a great job as Felt. A more balanced portrayal of Felt than the one in "All the President's Men".
This movie will interest people fascinated by the abuses of Watergate. For those without that interest, then the movie will likely drag on for them.
Bundy and the Green River Killer (2019)
This could have been a good film but......
Weak acting, slow story line, and just not engaging at all. Richard Mark, the actor portraying "Ted Bundy" was the best actor of this lot. At least his portrayal of Bundy seemed interesting.
The chase scene in the forest where the police go after a fleeing Gary Ridgway (the Green River Killer) was pathetic. All the actors were moving so slowly in this "fast pace chase" that my 92 year old mother could have caught him...and she uses a walker.
Just a weak, disappointing film that wasted what could have been a great story. I guess a 1 million dollar budget doesn't get you much in today's film industry.
Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice (2019)
Better than Excellent !!
An outstanding documentary about the best singer of the 20th century. Linda Ronstadt has incredible vocal range and a tremendous richness to her singing. It was a thrill to hear her sing once again and to see the interviews from her peers about her career.
The movie has a homey feel to it. Candid discussions from managers, producers and music executives on their experiences with her. Excerpts of her singing a variety of musical styles: pop, rock, country, broadway musicals, traditional pop songs and traditional Mexican music. The woman can sing virtually anything.
The documentary concludes with Linda explaining that she now has Parkinson's disease and can no longer sing. The same disease that afflicted her grandmother.
Well worth watching for fans of Linda Ronstadt as well as others who know her music.
Lord of the Flies (1990)
William Golding would be proud of this film !!
The film stays mostly true to the book. Good photography.
Balthazar Getty gives a very good performance as the lead character Ralph. Chris Furrh is very good as his nemesis Jack.
Sadly, none of the young actors in this movie went on to any type of film career other than Balthazar Getty (Ralph) and James Badge Dale (Simon).
Aquaman (2018)
Aquaman -- A likable super hero
I watched this movie primarily because all the women at work have been going all ga ga over Jason Momoa.
The movie was OK, but not great. Probably a little better than I expected.
The Current War (2017)
Electrifying !!
Historical fiction so please understand that when you watch this film. Based on real events but modified for drama.
A great film for people who like biographical films with lots of character development. Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon do a great job in creating the characters of "Thomas Edison" and "George Westinghouse". The role of JP Morgan in this story was well done. Morgan is an often overlooked character in the competition between Edison and Westinghouse.
Filming looks historically accurate for attire and scenery. I found the film to be engaging. It keep my interest all the way through.
The Accountant (2016)
Well done -- A mix of action and intellectual material
A well written plot with some twists at the end of the film. An excellent performance by Ben Affleck as an awkward math savant who is a mix of intellect and action hero. The film will keep you guessing on where its going, all the way to the end.
I am glad to have finally watched this film on DVD after originally hoping to see it in the theater.
Jurassic Predator (2018)
Thought this was a movie in the "Jurassic Park" series....
Well, I was wrong. A low budget ($100,000) film that looks like it was made by a high school AV club. Simplistic plot. Filming of the dinosaur was not too convincing. Acting was bad in a lot of parts.
But, in fairness to the film, it did hold my attention well enough that I watched the entire movie.
