Athena (2022)
Shocking and beautifully crafted cinematography
I just watched it a couple days ago, mostly because it reminded me of what happened last summer (2023), when multiple cities in France "lit up" due to the riots after a teenager got killed by the police during a traffic stop.
This movie is...UNBELIEVABLE GOOD!!! (I highly recommend to watch the make-of, available on Netflix too) The high tension scenes and constant anger, accompanied with a great choice of music track, created a masterpiece (in my honest opinion). Yes, the story behind is very sad and, as I mentioned above, it looks SO REAL with nowadays France...but this is the first time when I've seen the aftermath of something like that developed on the big screen.
Overall, a not-so-easy-to-watch movie, but hats-down to Romain Gavras for having the guts to make it, AHEAD of what happened last year in France!
Maestro (2023)
Booooorrriinnggg!!!
We were trying to watch it the other night and we had to stop after a quite painful, hard-to-stay-awake 1hr (almost half of the movie).
Bradley Cooper, who we admire for his talent as an artist, failed to deliver with this movie - we couldn't feel the engagement in the "story" (the black and white cinematography SHOULD'VE tell something to the audience, I think...but we couldn't see it, if there was a reason behind it, sorry!). Anyways, with the whole hype in the media and the recent nominations to the Golden Globes, we had waaaaayyy too much expectations from this movie.
Too bad, because Bradley started on a "right foot" on the directorial path - with "A star is born" (remake)...We'll see with his next project if he will get the same recognition.
The Holdovers (2023)
My favourite for 2023, by far
In a world where CGI and (newly) AI are getting more and more traction, someone had the guts (A. Payne) to get to the "basics" and (re)create THAT...feeling - to fall in love with a beautiful, simple (yet complex) story around Christmas time, set in the early 70s.
I think this could easily become one of those movies that you SHOULD watch it again in the next years - who knows, maybe a "Christmas classic"?
As of now, this movie is nominated for Golden Globes (several categories) and I have a hunch that the Oscar nominations will come too - totally deserved them!
Thank you, Alexander Payne and your incredible cast!
Brut Force (2022)
Maaann...what a waste
It could've been a decent (almost great) movie, but if failed at all these points:
- plot: a mix of Mexican telenovela with a dash of a thriller, lacking at the core of the story, trying to get to the finish line without following a proper sense
- leading actress: bad acting (I can see that the Director - Eve Symington, used her sister, Leila, for the main character in this movie, but I don't know if her directing guidelines made "Sloane" sooo bad)
- the title: whyyyyy? It's so misleading and it does nothing to do with ANYTHING in this movie. The Mexican workers have been scared with dead skunks and they were leaving the vineyard...that was a "brut force"??
Anyways, for all the others that will read the reviews of this movie - the very low rate is INDEED true! Don't waste your time (and money, maybe) watching it!
Karppi (2018)
It had some potential, BUT...
...WHAT THE HECK??? Same as in Season 1, WHO IN THE RIGHT MIND (nevertheless, she IS a Police Detective, don't forget this!!!) IS GOING BY HERSELF, with NO PHONE or BACKUP, to pursue a criminal into an empty building/deserted hospital, after she KNEW what the criminal is capable of??? Poor script - sorry to say this...
Also, A CAPTAIN of POLICE Dept, going into his home, seeing a break-in (a perfect round circle was done on some back window), PLUS the whole power was cut-off and HE IS STILL GOING IN - without any calling for backups OR pulling a gun (he is a STILL a policeman, remember??) - SHOUTING HIS DAUGHTER NAME!!! LOL...this is getting ridiculous by the minute! OF COURSE HE IS GETTING SHUT AND HE DIED SOON AFTER!
OR...the Mayor lady throwing herself into the hands of the criminal, just by eloping from her home guarded by...3 Police peeps!!! Hahahaha
Sorry for these CAPS, but..C'MON!!!
*sigh"...I was hooked on the 1st season from all the stories unfolded with every episode, but the 2nd season is getting...too much - I'm on the episode 4th from 8th now and I'm on the fence if I still want to continue!
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021)
Excellent movie!...
...and Jessica Chastain made probably the best role of her career (so far)!
I never knew about what happened with this couple and how much impact they had in those times, but this movie was very well done with a great cast and interesting true story.
Highly recommend to watch it!
8-Bit Christmas (2021)
Just...NOT!
I cannot see how this movie got so many high-rate reviews!!! After watching it for half an hour, I gave up! There was NOT a single BIT of entertainment nor a Christmasy feel in it! Are you hoping for a family-flick with that 80's vibe and kids hyped to get a Nintendo (the Holy Grail gift of that time)? NOT this one, I'm afraid...They are failing to recreate that feeling - even though, in the last few years, it was a trend in getting back to that times - plus, the acting is somehow...fake! Bad jokes, weak script - overall, just...NOT so good movie!
