Brendon Chase (1980)
Truly remarkable television - typical GB excellence
I remember watching this when I was about 14 in NZ, and not wanting it to come to a conclusion. I have thought about the series many times in the subsequent 23 years and managed to dig up the title from the description written on memorabletv.com (an excellent resource). So once I had that, I felt I needed to acknowledge here the obviously great impact the show had on me. The relationships presented are wonderful and the imagination is captured by the concept of the brothers living in a tree in the middle of (what must have been even in the period set) a rare British wood. I only wish now I could obtain a copy to be able to refresh my memories. If you get the opportunity - don't miss it.
Moonbase (1997)
Quirky late night fare
This seemingly unaffiliated space drama, borrows from everyone but is a more than adequate representation of the genre. Nothing new here, but you keep trying to pick where you have seen 'that' before. Great entertainment when scheduled late-night Wimbledon coverage has been washed out.
Wild West (2002)
One house good, two house bad....
Dawn French in a quirky comedy set in the picturesque, yet rather unusual, coastal village of St Gweep in the west of England.
French plays Mary Tregednack who lives above the post office with her neurotic partner, Angela. Mary always says what she thinks and is not averse to stocking the shop she runs with stolen goods, while Angela's prim exterior masks an obsession with frocks and phobias.
A Cornish cottage is sold as a holiday home to a couple from London. Mary and the people of St Gweep decide enough is enough and a shipwreck causes Tupperware to be washed upon the beach.
Nice Guy Eddie (2002)
Ricky Tomlinson vehicle
Well acted - certainly, but the depressing northern English setting and heavyily accented language is not to everyone's taste.
This is UK TV made for the UK and without any of the self-mocking humour of The Royal Family - sadly.
Ricky is 'the nice guy' helping solve the current local problems such as child molestation, suicide and insurance scams - often accompanied by his recently found son.
From this side of the world it looks like it's taking itself too seriously.
