Don't Breathe (2016)
An instant classic
I remember not seeing any promotional material for this movie, no trailers, billboards or ads and I really wish I did. I unfortunately did not see this in theaters but rather saw it via DVD rental and I'm glad I took a chance on it. I went into it not expecting much and predicted it was going to be a formulaic crime thriller and I was wrong. The three characters we are introduced to seem paint by the numbers but our protagonist Rocky is fresh take on the "does wrong to do good" troupe. The set up is interesting on it's own but once they make it to the house, it really takes off and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Stephen Land as the antagonistic Blind Man is nothing short of incredible. His presence is intimidating, his voice is chilling and his disability never makes him feel any less threatening. The suspense you feel in certain scenes is complimented by its cinematography and sound design. This is truly a great modern horror/thriller.
Child's Play (2019)
This was not necessary
So right off the bat I want to get something out of the way, the Chucky doll looks so weird, dumb and downright HORRIBLE. It is such an eyesore and I really couldn't take any scene with him seriously as I was distracted by it's huge head stupid looking face. With that out of the way, this movie did not need to be made. This movie doesn't offer anything new, fresh or interesting to justify it being made, this should have been it's own movie. I don't hate the small changes such as aging up Andy, Chucky being a Buddi doll and being an AI home assistance doll, what ruined it is the dialog, Andy's annoying friends, Shane, Chucky's acting and how powerful they made him. He is linked to the internet but seems to be able to control anything electronic, even things that are not connected to wifi i.e the thermostat and table saw. Chucky the doll is boring, never really interesting, weird and looks really awkward whenever he moves or talks. The best part of the movie honestly is the kills but you can really get same quality or better quality of gore in other movies.
Bel-Air (2022)
Why? Just why?
I grew up watch the classic Fresh Prince of Bel Air and still watch it from time to time so when I heard about a remake (or whatever this is) I was hesitant but willing to give it a fair chance. After the first episode I realized, oh no this was a mistake. This show has enough differences in it to be it's own show and have no ties to the original show. It is just way too dramatic and over the top that I cannot believe that someone was actually paid to write this type of dialog. I would expect this level of bad writing from an old soap opera or cheesey CW show but man, does this take the cake for weird lines in a show. The acting is fine I guess considering the material they are working with. It is humorless, bland, boring and very in your face about a message that never sets. I know it is not supposed to be funny or have any humor but considering that it is not working as a drama, maybe they should reconsider its direction. The very few serious and dramatic moments in the original show blow anything this show has to offer, acting wise and writing wise.
The Baby (2022)
Had so much potential
Initially the opening scene got me hooked, it was dark, mysterious and interesting. Then I got to episode four and realized that they ran out of ideas and REALLY tried to stretch out an already thin plot. They try too hard to be smart, different and try so hard to get a message out there but it gets lost in a muddy plot, cringe-worthy dialog and jokes that fall flat. The characters are never interesting and all pretty unlikable, especially Natasha and Bobbi. The best parts of the show are the titular Baby, Ms. Eaves, and the ending (but partially because it meant the show was over). It felt like the writers/creators took themselves too seriously and wanted to make something artsy when in reality they could've had a darkly funny gore-fest. It starts off feeling like its going to be a witty dark comedy but quickly becomes a message about mental health and symbolism, which is fine but it's such a tonal shift that it never fully recovers and loses any potential it had. In the end it was meh.
Bee & Puppycat: Lazy in Space (2022)
It's weird, it's wacky and doesn't always make a lot of sense, and I LOVE it for that.
Having discovered the web series on Channel Frederator way back when, I was extremely excited to learn the the continuation was coming to Netflix. Though when watching it, I realized it was part continuation and part retelling. There are some clips and references to the web series but with a fresh new take and new story. Netflix is known to give their content creators full range to make the show however they want, so seeing Natasha Allegri take full reigns on the show made it all the better. The animation is beautiful at times and fun/cute at others without it coming off too bubbly. With more episodes, it gave audiences time to explore the characters, the worlds and the possibilities of the show. The show doesn't take itself too seriously and knows its audiences. That's not to say it's all style and no substance. It's action packed but the action never takes away from the story, it's weird but not nonsensical and more importantly its never boring. This show has scenes beautifully animated, good visual gags, as well as good jobs and the voice acting is spot on. If I had any complaint, it would be sometimes we spend a tad long on certain side characters, but it never turned me off from the show. This has easily become my favorite show to come out of 2022.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Another Harry Potter rip off
This movie was extremely hard to follow, had nothing really to separate it from the other Happy Potter Knock offs. It was joyless and bland. I found it pretty much unbearable to watch. It doesn't even qualify for So Bad It's Good. From the get go, it throws you in the middle of the world with no real explanation of what's going on and the significance of people and things. The narration doesn't help as it's only follows along with what we can plainly see. It is extremely rushed and they cram as much plot as they possibly can in an attempt to move the story alone. The problem being that it moves so quickly that you never get a chance to make sense of what just happened in the scene. Acting is stiff, awkward for some, horribly exaggerated for others. Would recommend you stay away from this one.
