Don Quijote de Orson Welles (1992)
A glimpse at what could have been
This is really cool. Any fan of Welles needs to check this out. The quality of the video is really bad, but you can still get an idea of what Welles was trying to do. Welles was a genius and this film shows that, incomplete and all.
The Trip (1967)
funny stuff
This movie is very dated and even at the time it was an exploitation flick, but it still is really funny. Roger Corman doesn't get enough credit. His movies were very well done with the budgets he had available. Also check out the beard that Bruce Dern sports in the movie, he looks like Grizly Adams.
Auto Focus (2002)
the performances make this film
The director is way off on how to tell this story. He starts off in the beginning by having a swinging Rat pack style opening and then the style of the film is supposed to follow the downward spiral of Bob Crane. It doesn't work. The style near the end of the film when Crane is hitting bottom works really well, but most of the film is way off; why? It suggests that everything is really ok, there is no problem in Bob Crane's world lurking under the surface early on. If the entire film was told in the way the end was (hand-held cameras, very saturated colors) then the point would have come across that the problem is with Crane always and it consumes him and may have ended his life. The performances are really wonderful and make the entire film still worth seeing.
Secretary (2002)
Spader is still a weirdo
The two leads really make this film. Spader is THE sex weirdo dude of our generation and Maggie Gyllenhaal is amazing in the movie. Amazing, she is really good. The story starts to pander at the end and goes a little too long (tries to make sure we see they happily ever after) and that isn't needed, but the movie is still very funny, so go see it.
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Walken is amazing
This movie is a good change for Speilberg, because unlike his last two movies it is actually good. Not just parts, or up until a moment when he screws it up; Catch Me... is enjoyable all the way through. What really makes the film is Christopher Walken. He has given many great performances, but he really steals the movie. Envoking so much humanity into his character...wow! He's going to get an Oscar nominaton and maybe this year the judges aren't smoking crack and he'll win.
Red Dragon (2002)
Better Than Manhunter.
So I hate Brett Ratner, but I must give him credit; he did a really good job with this film. Everything is an improvement over "Hannibal". The script, the actors (all are so damn good in the film) and just the overall feel is closer to "Silence of the Lambs". Worth Seeing and even an improvement on "Manhunter" that was made a few years ago.
Knockaround Guys (2001)
Terribly Bad and Horrible.
This sucks. Tom Noonan is good in the film, but everything else is bad. Well, in one scene you can see a "Bottle Rocket" movie poster in the background that was cool, but this movie was not cool. Really bad.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
PT Anderson's Best Movie yet- Amazing!
I got to see a sneak Preview of this film a few nights ago and PT Anderson was there to answer questions. The film "Punch Drunk Love" is really good and explores themes from Anderson's other works, mainly: Love, how it can be very hard for some people to Love, but it still is possible. I have to say that the film is great, really funny and random. Emily Watson and Adam Sandler are wonderful. Phil Hoffman and Luis Guzman are great as well. It would be easy to say that the film is stylized and blah blah blah, but I say see it for yourself. You will not be sorry, and if you are...there is something very wrong with you, maybe it is not possible for you to love.
Snatch (2000)
Wants to be hip too much.
Snatch is escapism. It is a movie that does not invest in it's characters, and it tries to be ultra hip. If you like that sort of thing then see it. If you don't I think you should see "Sexy Beast" or the original "Get Carter." Both great British Gangster films.
