The film is highly underrated, i came into this movie with zero expectations.
Two women in the 18th century fall in love with each other knowing that they cant be together. Heloise is sent off to marry another in her sisters fate. Marianne sends her off into this fate by a single painting. What breaks them is when this painting feels its final stroke. They learn to watch each other, they figure each other out with their eyes You watch the ending as the camera zooms in, the music playing, expecting them to see each other, run away, be happy. Marianne can only watch her ending unfold again.
We don't get happy endings, but i love this ending.
