The Social Network (2010)
The genius unleashed and the dark evolution of the largest social network
Could not catch this on the theater but got a DVD from a friend of mine and watched it yesterday. The best part is that it talks about a subject that is very fresh and contemporary. Its not difficult to relate to. And this movie throws light into the dark evolution of the social network.
Was it the case of plain and superlative genius or was it the technical excellence coupled with the ability to stand over the shoulders of the giants. Whatever it is - this is an unexplored side of a large social mesh that has connected us all. To see it evolve from an idea, the people who carried it and how it has threaded the entire world and tied them together under one roof is a thrilling journey.
Don't miss your ticket to this one.
Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010)
light weekend watch @ home
Picked up the VCD from the store and it was lying around for 2 weeks. Decided to watch it today and enjoyed it. Love the way they have cracked satires on recession and the kidnapping racket in India. Rajat Kappor of "Mahesh Uncle" fame gives a measured performance but the most likable character for me is "Anni" in the film. Remember the actor who played Abhay deol's friend in Oye lucky lucky oye.
The movie had its quota of comical moments and gave me some good laughter. The narrative slacks a bit but the plethora of hilarious characters and moments saves the day. Only if they could have found a way get around neha dhupia.
Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)
The movie is fun. Go and Watch it
I gave this movie a 8. One of the best i have seen in recent times. In fact i missed when it was released and caught it at home recently. And during this time the movie had garnered multiple awards and positive reviews. In fact i heard and read so many that i lost my zest for watching the movie.
Then saw it on a shelf at music world and picked it. I am glad i did. The movie is pure unadulterated fun. Gives you the insight into the typical lingo of delhi and things you can easily relate to if you have lived in Delhi for some time. The story was fresh and both the leading actors were natural.
I can watch it multiple times.
Tanu Weds Manu (2011)
Not worth the hype
The movie was alright but not the kind of entertainer it was made out to be. The storyline was straight forward with some not so required abuses at the start. (Girl's father throwing one when madhavan says no to marriage).
Madhavan was ordinary and kangna's dialog delivery made me either laugh or irritated me. Movie's best moments belong to the gentleman playing "pappi" - madhavan's friend. I love the song kabhi saddi gully...
I would definitely say no to a theater watch. Well if u have nothing to do on a hot afternoon and want to stay home and run a DVD..may be think about it.
Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011)
A Gem of a movie
Well my best movie of the season so far. There was no hype surrounding the movie and i went with a neutral mind. It definitely made me laugh.
There's something about Irfan Khan. Sometimes i find him one dimensional but no one could have carried this movie but him. His portrayal of a hopeless lover with undying devotion would tickle you. His devotion and unconditional love inspite of knowing the girl is not interested but using him would make you adore him.
The story is tight and there is not a dull moment. All the hoopla may seem meaningless at times but will keep you glued. I watched it on theater and came out happy.
7 Khoon Maaf (2011)
Worth a watch...may be on DVD
The build up to the movie made me believe that it could be a thriller that would keep me on the edge of the seat but did not turn out to be. And it was not bad either.
The movie is all Priyanka. The only men who made themselves noticeable were Irfan Khan and Anu kapoor. I like the part at the end when she says "she is going to drink the blood". I like the sound of it. The movie builds up as if to make you expect that something chilling..eerie may happen but it doesn't.
I watched it for Vishal Bhardwaj and Priyanka and was not completely disappointed. An original attempt by the group but i will say watch it on DVD.
A Wednesday (2008)
A Fast Paced thriller which is worth watching
By the time i was going for this movie i had already heard positive reviews about it but i still went with an unprepared mind. A lot of times one hears great reviews but the movie turns out to be a whimper. But not this one.
One of the recent fast paced thriller was Aamir but this one goes beyond it. The presence of great actor duo of anupam and naseer only reinforces the script which is the biggest strength of the film. Without an overdose of emotions and preaching, the film conveys its message. It brings out one's own fears of the reigning terror in the country and threat we face to our own freedom.
The story is about a man who plants bombs in mumbai and telephones commissioner of police to release 4 terrorists to save the city. The rest i will leave for you to see as this is not a spoiler. The movie will keep you on the edge of the seat and will turn out to be a thrilling ride.
The movie's timing could not have been better and it hits you straight in the face. go and watch it!
Felon (2008)
Good Prison Movie
The movie has a tight script and will keep one glued to the screen. Its all about how one action can change your entire life. The move gives insight into a life in prison and conjures up feelings of pity, anger and sympathy at different times.
Val Kilmer puts in a tight performance and i barely recognised him in the first short cause of his unusual beard. But he sure got his role all figured out and delivers a masterful performance. this one is for all val kilmer fans.
This may not be the best prison movie..say something like shawshank redemption but it has its heart on the right place.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
what was it ?
i came, i read the reviews, i saw it and i am stunned in sort of a wrong way. i still don't know what i saw and i am not able to make heads and tails of it.
People have talked highly of this movie but i surely don't think it deserves all that. perhaps one of the worst western i have seen. and as for the plot i don't know even if its worth a mention. I don't even know how to describe what i just saw. Words have never been so tough coming! well i am still all for clint eastwood when it comes to western.
well i just didn't get this movie . if you did and liked it...thank heavens!
Singh Is Kinng (2008)
uncontrolled..uninterrupted fun
this movie has just one word for it and its "FUN". this is the first one since bheja fry that i have seen which had me laughing throughout. I didn't like Welcome and i still think that it was too much hype and no plot at all but i cant say the same about this one.
The story is about a villager Happy Singh who wants to help people but ends up troubling them. Happy Singh is sent to Australia to bring back lucky singh who is from the same village and a don in Australia. In the end happy manages to show light to Lucky singh and all his accomplices and cause a change of heart.
Forget the plot, the script, the other actors and there is just one real thing...akshaye kumar. His performance, punjabi accent, the dialogues and body language will keep u laughing throughout. The movie has no dull moment This is a one man show although he's got a great support from om puri, kiron kher and the rest of cast. The music is smashing and has great visuals too. Katrina looks gorgeous and the movie has all the makings of a great entertainer.
Go and enjoy....the movie is hilarious and so is akshaye kumar.
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
classy courtroom drama with entertaining verbal vollleys
Now this is a classic courtroom dramas unlike the modern battles where there are professional law firms, team of lawyers ,big money involved, repeated rehearsal of the witness and the panache.
The story is about a lawyer Paul Biegler played by James Stewart who on recommendation of his mentor and friend takes the case of an army man who has been convicted of killing a bar owner on the context of bar owner having raped his wife. The viewer doesn't see the murder and the circumstances but all facts are revealed through the engaging courtroom battle between biegler and a big city lawyer Claude Dancer played by George Scott.
The classic courtroom set up and the verbal battle between the two lawyers is the highlight of the movie. The way james stewart engages the courtroom through his recital, dramatics and wisecracks is worth repeated viewings. One who has a penchant for exciting courtroom battles will be gratified after watching it.
Although AFI lists this one at # 7, i will rate this one highly than to kill a mocking bird, the verdict.
The Verdict (1982)
Not the Best Courtroom Drama that i have seen
Paul Newman is a great actor and he puts up a performance that will keep you glued to the screen but i don't think this is the best courtroom drama that i have seen.
The movie is about an alcoholic lawyer who is fighting one last case to redeem himself. But he has a non cooperating judge and a hard nose Opposition lawyer to fight against him. All the evidence produced by him are turned down / overruled and inspite of this in the end the jury gives a decision in his favor. How it happened and why i don't have an answer to. The movie has some great scenes like the one where newman gives it back to the judge in the chamber but it doesn't make it a great Court Room Drama.
I have my own fav. like A few Good Men, And Justice For All, Philadelphia, Primal Fear, My Cousin Vinny,Amistad and this one doesn't belong to th same category. I saw it cause it was rated very highly on the forums and on AFI' s site but i sure do not agree.
Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008)
a hilarious, entertaining and feel good film
Well i am just out of the theater after watching this one. The movie has tons of feel good factor in it. Its got its own way of story telling, love and humor with amazing timing.
This story circles around a group of friends and centers around two of them i.e. jai and aditi. The story is fairly simple with them being the best buddies but not yet sure if its love. With time only they discover which way they are heading. The script is neat and original, direction is tight and you will not take your eyes off even for a second.
Jai, aditi and their group of friends are very natural. Jai looks calm and is in control. Aditi is spontaneous and got an irresistible smile .Some amazing cameos come from naseeruddin shah, jai's mom, paresh rawal, arbaaz and sohail khan and the airhostess( u would know once u see the movie). The line of humor which runs in the movie will keep you tickling throughout.
There is not even a single dull moment. I think probably the best 'feel good'movie of the year so far.
Love Story 2050 (2008)
Long, Excruciating Weekend Spoiler,
There have been long Hindi movies like Mughle Azam, Lagaan and i liked them even jodha akbar was tolerable. This one is a complete test of patience. I couldn't see the complete movie and had to walk out in the climax (my first ever)...
Story is not even worth discussing here. There is no plot. Everyone hams. Harman carries a pathetic sorrowful expressions on his face and dialogue delivery is bad. His transformation from a macho, extreme sports loving person to a sentimental emotional character is hard to understand. Boman as a mad scientist is over the board. Priyanka is wasted and doesn't create the magic. And the kids with unnatural dialogues irritate.
Back to the future series still remains my fav time machine movies.
I am sorry harman...thats a nasty launching movie you had. One star for floating concert concept and archna pooran singh. And fellow movie goers not the one i would recommend for the weekend.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
powerful action flick...special effects are rock solid
I have not seen the hulk, the first one but i did not miss anything while watching the incredible hulk. The movie is an entertaining action flick.
The story is very easy going, predictable and almost self explanatory. The movie starts with edward norton as part of an experiment which goes wrong and turns him into a green monster. The general who wants to use hulk as a military weapon with the intention of creating more like him, chases hulk. His daughter, Liv tyler loves patrick norton. General has tim roth as the military leader who hates hulk. Tim roth turns himself into abomination with the help of a biologist who is initially trying to cur e hulk. Now in the initial part edward norton wants to get rid of the monster inside him. But later he wishfully turns into one wto stop the abomination.
Now the movie has certain cliché where only tyler can turn him back to normal with her expression of love. The director just missed showing her kissing norton to convert him back into a normal person from a monster :-) . The climax has been compromised a little by giving hint of another sequel. Although i liked the final scene where patrick norton is practicing yoga.
tyler is lost and ordinary. Tim roth overreacts most of the time. Patrick norton and his avtar hulk are the ones to watch.
Shao Lin san shi liu fang (1978)
a classic kung fu movie
Although its been referred by many names, i would like to address it as 36th Chamber of Shaolin. FOr me that name has the punch.
The story is one we have seen lots of times. A cruel king kills all the good people in the town and the family of "San Te (played by Chia Hui Liu)". San Te seeks refuge in Temple of Shaolin and learns the 35 chambers of shaolin, the are that is available only to the monks. He dares to propose the 36th chamber where he wants to teach kung fu to anyone and everyone. He is sent out of shaolin only to be returned when called back. He heads bacck to the town and takes revenge from the barbarian king and opens a kung fu school after that.
The unique attractive feature of this one is the shaolin training that is shown. i had never seen anything like that before. since its an old movie one might find it lacking for pace at places but if u love martial arts and kung fu...u gotta watch this one at least once.
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
best of the three so far!
A series coming to a conclusion is mostly a happy ending. All of us who have been on an exciting ride with Jason Bourne so far, reach this thrilling, adrenaline pumping, speed monster ride grande finale.
jason bourne gets to know who he was and how it all started. But this not before some amazing chases, mind games and hand to hand combats. The non stop action which has been the hallmark of this series is taken to the highest level in this one.
The movie starts in Russia and ends in NYC but not before one has been taken to places around the world. I am not giving any more of the plot away so go and watch it.
This one is not to be missed!
Street Kings (2008)
Mr. Anderson excels as a cop fighting out in this LAPD cop thriller
I have got used to seeing keanu reeves as Mr. Anderson of Matrix with the line " Call me Neal". But he enacts a different role here and delivers it impressively.
The movie by David Ayer is along the steps of harsh times and training day. Keanu Reeves is a cop with dark shades in his professional life. He gets entangled in murder of a fellow cop and throws open a vicious circle of corruption. The movie will keep you guessing all the time and has all the elements of a tight thriller.
For me LA Confidential still remains one of the best cop - corruption movies i have seen along with dirty harry series. But this one has created its own slot.
The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)
pure entertainer...go watch it
I was yearning to a see a martial arts movie and came across this one. The star cast of jet li and jackie chan together got me interested. And i wasn't disappointed.
The movie is a pure entertainer spun across the legend of monkey king who was foxed and turned into a statue in a battle by an evil king and he waits for someone to return his stick weapon and free him. An American teenager who feasts on kung fu movies is destined to free the monkey king with the help of a teacher played by jackie chan.
The movie has some excellent fighting sequences. The movie is worth the money and wholesome entertainment.
Aamir (2008)
thriller that will keep you guessing all the way!
The TV star Rajeev Khandelwal makes an impressive movie debut with this one. The movie is a thriller which will keep you guessing all the way. We have seen similar thrillers like cellular or phone booth but this ones shows an entirely different scenario.
An Indian doctor on returning from London founds himself in precarious circumstances where his family is kidnapped and he is made to run around the city by goons. Its a simple story but told very effectively. The movie's impressive direction, editing and performances make sure that it never looses the pace.
The movie packs a punch and will be worth your money and time.
Jannat: In Search of Heaven... (2008)
its an entertainer - good way to kill time on an evening
the new movie from bhatt production house has been released to a great hype following the success of awarapan. Don't go to the movie expecting too much. Its just a time killer that will keep u busy till the end.
A gambler turns into a cricket bookie finding that he has a sixth sense of guessing what will happen the next ball. But his urge to make quick money pushes him into match fixing and he looses control of his life and love. The ending is very dramatic which lends the punch at the end. i kind of liked it.
Imran delivers a steady performance. He has done alright in similar roles in the past. the soundtrack and background score is good. Its a good way to kill time on an evening.
Sarkar Raj (2008)
better than sarkar - its an amitabh bachchan show all the way
For the generation that has idolized Amitabh Bachchan, this movie is a must. Before watching the movie I thought that the screen space and characterization would be shared among the big 3 but when u finish watching it, u realize that though others have a fair share of their role, they are there to support the angry old man. So as to put it, its the 'return of the Jedi', its a Amitabh Bachchan show all the way.
The movie begins with a very realistic story of a MNC trying to set up a power plant in Maharashtra.Everyone has their political interests in it and it becomes a nemesis for Nagre's. Ultimately it is revealed to be a political chess where every character is being maneuvered based on one's own interests.
The strength of the movie is the script and the screenplay. Ramu is back doing what he does best. Abhishek and Aishwarya perform their roles true to the character and Amitabh steals the show with his.His expressions of anger, remorse, ruthlessness will strike you.
Some reviews have called it painfully slow, dull.....if u liked sarkar and like watching amitabh in an intense drama then this movie is for u. So Ignore the reviews and make ur own after watching it.
Harsh Times (2005)
its out n out a Christian bale movie...
I saw street kings a week back and was looking for other works of the director 'David Ayer' and thats when i came across this one. This one held a double attraction with bale in it. I think he is a a very expressive actor and a seasoned performer. before this one i had seen his 'batman begin' and 'the prestige' but this one goes right on top of the list.
the movie is about jim played by bale and his friend mike both with contrast personalities and looking for jobs. bale is turned down by LAPD due to psyche problem and applies for federal agency. He also has a Mexican girlfriend whom he loves and plans to marry. Mike is Jim's best buddy and has a girlfriend to whom he has promised to find a job soon.
The movie starts slow and then build up very strongly where the viewer is made aware of the broken psyche if bale and how his anger makes him loose control and pushes towards self destruction. The display of emotions and the the frequent change of emotions from violent and aggressive to apologetic character played by bale is a hallmark of the film.
The ending couldn't have been perfect. watch this one and u wont be disappointed.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
go for indy jones but not to see old magic being recreated
i have loved the past indiana jones movies and 'the last crusade' the most. In the new one, harrison ford again essays the role of the archaeologist, treasure hunter perfectly. none does it better. and the theme music in the background tries to recreate magic. though i did not find the indy's love angle thrown in interesting. i think in recent times the movies like national treasure series have done well so comparison with the these and with old henry jones jr. movies is inevitable.
if you are a indiana jones fan go see this movie and you would enjoy. If you are a first timer to this character, you may not find the hype created around it worth it. better see the old ones and get a grip on the character and then see this one.
Provoked: A True Story (2006)
see it to learn about atrocities that can happen to a woman
The movie is based on a true story which was the first reason i saw this film. Aishwarya Rai has performed well in the role of Kiran.
The story educates one of the atrocities that can happen to a woman and her fight to claim the justice that is initially denied to her cause she was ashamed to discuss the abuse that she suffered.
The movie looks like a low budget movie and the screenplay or the camera-work may not fascinate you. The movie is based on facts and stays true to its original content.
See the movie for its content and the message it wants to convey to the society.
