Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy (2001)
A warm fuzzy?
A documentary dedicated to portraying porn star Ron Jeremy as a nice guy, an average Joe who just happens to star in porno movies for a living. Unable to make it as a straight actor, Jeremy cashes in on his number one asset to become one of the longest lasting stars in the business. Now 48, he's still at it in his overweight and overly hairy glory. That, as we see, is part of his appeal. Living out the fantasies of all the other less than hunky guys out there.
Ah but there's more. It turns out Jeremy has never lost his desire to break through on the mainstream stage. He's really a lonely guy navigating the shallow Hollywood social scene with a relentless sense of purpose.
I found it hard to feel too sorry for this guy. But I did enjoy this often funny portrayal of this enigma of modern culture.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Faithful adaptation.
Like the Fellowship of the Ring itself, director Peter Jackson faced a host of hazards in tackling this project. How to satisfy the legion of Tolkien fanatics who study the history of Middle Eart down to the last footnote while still making a movie that doesn't require a reading list? How to make this a "family" blockbuster while still retaining the books dark tones. He succeeds at both, a faithful adaption that reminds us why Tolkien's tale spawned the fantasy craze.
