The Planet (2006)
Very well put together documentary.
There was a lot of information in this documentary. None of it is very pleasant, unfortunately, but it is vitally important that more people get to see shows like this to really bring across the dire state of the world as we know it. The film cleverly and clearly explains many aspects of why the world is in trouble while allowing that we do still have time to stop the worst happening IF WE CHANGE NOW. It is not all total gloom and doom. There are people who are trying to get the right message across and there are things that can be done to reduce our impact, but we all need to reduce our toxic emissions, reduce our consumption of unnecessary goods and plant trees and gardens. It was great to hear an explanation of how the environment provides many free services to humans - services we take for granted but which are being damaged and used up; such as free provision of oxygen, soils, animals, medicines (and many more)- all things that are getting spoilt by our greed and pollution.I'm pretty aware of a lot of environmental problems but there were a few things in this film that surprised me. If you get the chance, watch this excellent film. The soundtrack and the visual style is interesting too, so it helps you relax a little while being shocked.
The World's Fastest Indian (2005)
A beautiful film that leaves you feeling good.
I saw this on a plane, and even though it was on that little screen, this film has left me feeling glad I saw it. Antony Hopkins is great as Burt, who has to battle a lot of things to pursue his dream of racing at Bonneville. The film has many positives, showing Burt to have been an open-minded, easygoing guy. There are some funny scenes and some classic one-liners of the sort a guy like Burt would use. There were a few good laughs and a few touching moments. I reckon everybody would get something from this film. It's great to see something that's not full of violence or mean-spirited people. When it comes out here I might even go and see it on the big screen. There are some cool cars and scenery (and sounds) for folk that like drag racing and just general mechanically cool stuff going on. Excellent movie!
Van Helsing (2004)
Why's everyone taking it so seriously?
Sure it's camp and over the top, but it's all in good fun. Like, it's not a true story, and there's been a million and one variations on all these stories, so what's the big deal with adding a few little bits? Sommer's hasn't done a bad job combining them together. I'm Hugh-centric and a big vampire fan so I enjoyed it. There were enough twists in the plot to keep me going and a little surprised here and there. The humour's okay too. The David Wenham character is funny.
The original Frankenstein's monster had a compassionate nature and was intelligent; he just didn't get what he wanted, so in the book he killed folk- his creator had a choice in that, whereas here he is a pawn and aware that he doesn't have to be a bad guy.
People watch worse television everyday and don't complain about it. Leave your disbelieving brain at the door and enjoy the ride...
And, uh, don't take it so seriously!!
