Dale (2007)
History of a legend
If you're already a Nascar fan, you'll love this film, hands down.
If you aren't a fan, but are curious what makes Dale Earnhardt's legacy in Nascar so powerful, watch this film to learn about the Intimidator. A wonderful overview of his career, family, following, and spirit.
I would call it a fair and fitting tribute to an inspirational figure. The solo interviews with Dale are really touching, and the whole film is emotionally charged with Dale's spirit and passion for the sport.
The film as a whole isn't an artistic masterpiece, but the subject matter is powerful enough to make it an enjoyable, and at times bittersweet, picture of Dale. A big step up from an ESPN 'SportsCentury' style documentary.
The film doesn't play Dale up for more than he was - a born racer. He loved to drive and he loved to win, and that drive dominated his life to the end. But his swagger and effect on his crewmates and fans, I think, are what makes him legendary more so than his wins.
