For All Mankind (2019)
It is in fact a soapy show
I'll get right to it, season one is worth the watch but it seriously loses it way in season 2.
The first season is not so action packed as many wish for in a alternative history sci-fi show, but it has its tense moments. I thought it did a wonderful job at incorporating the many perspectives of this story with intriguing and believable emotion. From the ground drama to the struggles of space isolation to command center crisis aversion, theres a deep connection with all the characters.
Season two really pushes the side characters into the spotlight, and they all feel like mishandled token characters. Alot of time is spent on meaningless relationship development, while the threat of nuclear war seems less like an actual threat and more like a political hurdle for NASA. The main crew is interesting enough to continue watching, but the Karen and Danny ordeal was too far. Spoiler: she does the dirty with this kid, who she practically raised as her own in season one... as of the latest episode, this development is just as large as the main story and I seriously cant understand why.
Lastly, it ironically feels like an 80s action flick. There is no focus on consequences or technicalities, sharp professionals make terrible judgment calls and the action feels unrealistically down to the wire. As the show now repeats "NASA isnt what it used to be."
Dead in the Water: A Fear the Walking Dead Story (2022)
Another AMC Flop
If you're looking for a refreshing take on the Walking Dead series, brace yourself for another disappointing hour of tv.
Right off the bat the show starts with some of the driest writing and acting of the year. Our main crew looks out of place, confused and emotionally inept. There was no attempt at making these soldiers feel like soldiers, let alone normal human beings.
Long story short, its awkward, inconsistent and shallow. The crew repeatedly question and disobey direct orders, but without hesitation, shoot their brothers dead. They almost forget to question whats even happening, switching from ready to kill to being family men with every new scene.
It takes real effort to squander a setting like "zombie apocalypse on a nuclear submarine" but they did it anyway. 3/10 dont recommend.
