Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Families come in various forms
'Three Days in Kamakura' was made in 2012. The film depicts the changes that occur when a boy, Jay, half-Japanese, half-Western into David and Keiko's lives. I like this film. There are two reasons. First, The film depicts the real daily lives of them. I felt that the film was raising issues for society by depicting how people are prejudiced just because they are foreigners. Second, the scene is skillful in that the situation can be understood through images without words. Keiko's surgical scar around her stomach will help us to understand why these women have no children. I was also moved by the way their love for each other deepened further through the experience as if they were a family with children. For these reasons I like this film. This film has different impressions depending on the viewer. I think people should watch 'Three Days in Kamakura.'
Otousan no tabako (2007)
IMPRESSED
'Otousan no tabako' was made in 2007. The film begins with a scene in which a girl named Sara tries to buy cigarettes. The sight of a small child with a school bag on her back buying cigarettes is a bit unbalanced and makes me curious to see what will happen next. I like this film even though it was a little difficult to understand. There are two reasons. First, I liked the contrast between Sara, who wants to meet her father's needs because she loves him, and her mother, who wants to ban her husband smoking because she cares about him. It was painful for me because I can very much relate to the feelings of both sides. Second, I was moved by the last scene where they read "The Giant Turnip." This is because we finally have an everyday scene in a family where normal life is not depicted. For these reasons I like this film. This film has different impressions depending on the viewer. I think people should watch 'Otousan no tabako.'
Knick Knack (1989)
The most pretty snowman in the world
'Knick Knack' was made in 1989. It is a story about a snow globe snowman tries to join the other travel souvenirs in a party. I like this movie very much. There are two reasons. First, I can get emotionally involved with the snowman. The world outside the snow globe is fascinatingly depicted. On the other hand, I found it surprising and interesting that there are so many tools inside the snow globe to escape. I figured that a snowman likes the mermaid ornament. I felt that it does not matter if you are a human or a snowman to make an effort for someone you love. The second reason is that the characters are fascinating. They have no lines, but I can guess what they are thinking. Each has its own personality and is colorful and lovely. There are so many fascinating aspects to this film that it is hard to believe it is only three minutes long. I think people should watch 'Knick Knack.'
Spielzeugland (2007)
Nothing is so strong as mother's love
'Toyland' was made in 2007. This story is a German perspective on the events caused by the Holocaust of the Jews during World War II. I like this movie very much. There are two reasons. First, it depicts the purity of children and the dangers created by their purity. Heinrich's mother lies to him that David is going to Toyland. Then he believes in Toyland and wants to go there himself. There is a contradiction in the lies she tells for him that put him in danger. I was as nervous as his mother during the scene where he is not in bed in the morning. The second reason is that the scene where Heinrich's mother and David's mother have an eye-to-eye conversation is overwhelming. There is a sense of tension and I feel as if I am there. I also liked the irony in the fact that the Nazi soldiers could not tell Jews from the rest at all. There are so many fascinating aspects to this film that it is hard to believe it is only 14 minutes long. I think people should watch 'Toyland.'
Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017)
difficult
'Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times' was made in 2017. It is a story about two strangers who meet five times at different times in their lives. The film begins with the scene where they meet for the second time. I thought the order was changed to more clearly express the gap between Alistair and Sammy's positions, which are reversed. I do not like this film. There are two reasons. First, it is a little difficult to understand. I get the gist of the story, but their social position changes each time they meet, so I could not tell which man was Alistair or Samir. They seemed similar and I could not get much of the content in my head. The second reason is that it clearly depicts that children raised by a racist mother are racist. This also felt like a kind of discrimination. This is cruel. After watching it and understanding the content, I did not feel very well. For these reasons, I did not like this film, but my friends were impressed. It is a movie that different viewers feel differently about. I felt that if I watched it again, I might discover something else.
The Lunch Date (1989)
Don't judge by appearances.
'The Lunch Date' was made in 1989. This is a film about a woman who misses the train and has lunch at a cafe. I like this film. There are two reasons. First, It is a place where every gesture of the main female character is beautiful. Even her movement of picking up a fork is graceful and admirable. I strongly hope to become such a woman in the future. Second, it is interesting that we have to see it all the way to the end to understand how interesting it is. Moreover, by watching a film until the end, we realize that we are unconsciously judging people by their appearance. This reminded me that it is important to see the essence of the other person, not their appearance. There are so many fascinating aspects to this film that it is hard to believe it is only ten minutes long. I think people should watch 'The Lunch Date.'
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Unexpected Ending
'I'll Wait for the Next One' was made in 2002. This is a film about the events of a few minutes in the Paris subway. When I first saw it, I did not like this film. There are two reasons. First, I felt that the woman's feelings are disrespected. I got emotionally attached to her, so I also felt like I was being ridiculed. Second, it is difficult to understand. I thought it was difficult to read the man's intention because making money on the train is a culture that does not exist in Japan and is not familiar to us. For the above reasons, I did not like the film at first. However, when I watched the film after understanding its content, I realized that the quality of the film was very high. The most amazing part is that the main character, the woman, has no lines at all. It begins with a scene in which a woman walking alone finds a happy man and woman. At this point, her expression indicates that she wants a partner. Moreover, the performance of the man who starts talking in the subway is so great that everyone watching the film is fooled by its ending. Thus, the film is distinguished by its structure and the actors' performances. There are so many fascinating aspects to this film. I found that with so much content that it was hard to believe it was only four minutes long. I think people should watch 'I'll Wait for the Next One.' more than two times.
Lifted (2006)
Animated movies that adults can enjoy
I watched 'Lifted' for the first time. This was made in 2006. This is the story of an apprentice alien who tries to abduct a human. I like this film. There are three reasons. First, it is an interesting story that could be achieved only through animation. This is because I often feel uncomfortable and do not like it when I see fake aliens in live-action versions. Also, the pictures are cute, so it is soothing to watch. Second, the content is a jokey comedy, so I can enjoy watching it without thinking about it. It is easy to watch and energizing with the quick development of the story that is typical of short movies. Lastly, I like the way the movie ends. The last scene is not shown in the video, but it is interesting to see what happened just from the audio. For these reasons, I think people should watch this movie, and I think it is a great movie that has many other attractions besides these and can be easily enjoyed.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Good film
'Fish Out of Water' was made in 2005. This is about a man who rows a boat to go to work. It also depicts the people of the city who are surrounding him. I like this film. There are three reasons. First, the view is beautiful. It is a color film so I can see the colors of the city and it is very enjoyable to watch. I could feel as if I were visiting the town. Second, it is easy to imagine the personality of each of the characters. They have no dialogue, but I can understand what kind of person they are by their facial expressions, looks, and actions. This makes it easier to understand the film's content. Lastly, the ending is interesting. I thought that he was rowing because he was looking for a comfortable space. If I think in this way the reasons for his behavior in the last scene seemed to make sense. There are so many fascinating aspects to this film that it is hard to believe it is only eight minutes long. I think people should watch 'Fish Out of Water.'
Father and Daughter (2000)
Moving short film
I watched this short film for the first time. There are three things I thought about after watching it. First, I thought the lonely music gives the film the impression of a sad story. When you see this film, your impression of it will be very different depending on whether you see it with or without music. This clearly shows the impact that music can have on a film. Second, I thought this is the story of a daughter separated from her father. The turning of the bicycle wheel is linked to the passage of years. Since there is no dialogue, I found that this type of metaphor made the story more understandable. Lastly, I thought that because it was a silent film, it could be interpreted differently by different people. I thought the last scene was in heaven where father and daughter were able to meet again. However, the correct answer is not given in the movie. I felt that people could enjoy it no matter how many times they watched it because there was no correct answer. These are the three points I found interesting and I liked this film.
