Amongst Friends (1993)
Loved this Movie
This movie was so memorable to me that I remember the opening song, "Innocent Child". A fascinating and, for me, riveting character study of the choices and consequences that befall 3 young wealthy Jewish friends. The performances were good, but the writing was the main attraction. And the 5 towns NY setting. An 'early in her career' role by Mira Sirvino is also an added bonus (in a supporting role).
I thought the feel/atmosphere of the movie made it attractive and interesting, and the characters unique 'New York dialogue' and provincial sayings spiced up the movie. The movie had a very realistic feel for that time period/era, and is a good time capsule for that slice of life in the early 90's NY area. You will enjoy this movie, in spite of whatever flaws, because the writing/story is that good.
Spartan (2004)
Awesome Intrigue, first rate action, and classic Mamet-classic Kilmer
Where has this gem of a movie been? Why don't we see more of V. Kilmer? And what is the real story behind that political headline, i.e., that mysterious plane crash in some third world venue? If you like Mamet's rat-a-tat-tat sharp dialogue--which I do--and hard edged political 'black-ops' type intrigue, this is your movie. Kilmer has not been better and, in what I'd call an uncharacteristic role for him [Salton Sea notwithstanding], he shows why he is still A-list material as an actor. It what some may mischaracterize as a 'wooden performance', in a style mildly resembling Clint Eastwood,he uses a minimalist style that highlights his character's single purposed focus like a laser beam mission in life: to fulfill his Ranger credo and do the bidding of his government at any cost [well, almost any cost as you will see in the movie]. He is "Sgt. Rock" with a pretty face. Derrick Luke and Kyle Macy are outstanding, though each ones' role/screen time could have been increased to enhance the movie. I heartily recommend this one. Enjoy.
