Bom Dia, Verônica (2020)
One of the best Brazilian series, if not the best.
I understand that many ideas in "Good Morning, Veronica" may be very similar to other productions and that the script may not even be very good, a little predictable, not very innovative etc. But other than that, the story is still very engaging, the suspense works well, and the acting and the more technical aspects such as the action scenes are very good here, especially if we compare it to other Brazilian productions. Even though it was short, I really liked this last season. As a whole, I think it's a series worth checking out, especially for those who already like other shows in the same genre.
Sex Education (2019)
A Solid Balancing Act of Charm and Depth
Sex Education truly shines as an excellent series, managing to maintain its 'solid' quality from start to finish. This is an accomplishment that I largely attribute to the charisma of its cast and characters, its ability to strike a balance between joyful and somber moments, and its thoughtful script decisions, all wrapped in a visually appealing aesthetic.
My only minor critique lies in the occasional moments when the series grapples with challenging and complex subjects. Sometimes, the approach feels a tad performative and overly educational, resulting in a superficial treatment of these themes. However, it's important to note that this is not a frequent occurrence. In many instances, I found the series' handling of difficult topics to be commendable, offering a therapeutic touch. All in all, Sex Education was a profoundly satisfying series, leaving me thoroughly pleased. That's the essence of it.
The Idol (2023)
Delving into 'The Idol': My Candid Impressions
I ended up discovering and deciding to watch this due to all the drama surrounding this series on the bird's social network, now X, and turns out that, as usual, the exaggerated criticisms there and all the reasons why the series is "problematic" (ugh... I'm getting really fed up with that word 🙄🙄) didn't seem to have any basis and it's just a bunch of people parroting a rehearsed discourse without any critical thinking for who-knows-what reason. Maybe they don't like the director? I had only watched Malcolm & Marie by him before this, and only after watching The Idol, I decided to watch Euphoria, which is in fact actually better than this, maybe because he only got involved later here. However, it's worth pointing out many elements of Euphoria are indeed repeated in The Idol. I don't know what Twitter's/X's issue is with him, maybe it's a legitimate reason or a completely or partially made-up one? I confess I'm leaning towards the second option, while at the same time, perhaps he's a difficult person to work with? Or maybe twitter/X simply think all of his works are "problematic"? Anyway, I just don't know.
In the end, the series is good, very well made and, especially, well-directed, in my opinion. The performances are good too, even with a significant portion of the cast not being professional actors. The soundtrack and the music are excellent (as they should). The script is okay, with its ups and downs, which makes some episodes better than others. For example, I didn't like the first one very much, but I loved the last one, it made me change my rating from a 7 to an 8. It seems the series concluded without a second season after all; at least I found the ending perfect. Of course, it leaves things open, but many standalone movies have done that too. I confess I was quite taken aback by the plottwist at the end.
Anyway, I recommend it, but I'll just say that the series is indeed quite heavy, though in that regard, Euphoria is too. In fact, I personally find Euphoria even heavier and more explicit than this series, which makes it difficult to understand why this series is widely seen as "problematic" because of it's content while Euphoria is not as much seen that way.
The Trump Show (2020)
Good
I really liked the documentary in general, I thought it was very good in terms of production, interviews etc. These are relatively recent events, but I found it interesting to review how it all unfolded, and I think the documentary did that well overall. I just thought it was given a lot of importance to some things not that important or interesting, while other more interesting things didn't have as much approach as they should e.g the Capitol attempted insurrection, I even understood what they were trying to do in the end, but I thought the documentary would have benefited more from a fuller approach to the event. Other than that, it's a must-whatch for those who are interested in american politics.
