Julie and the Phantoms (2020)
Best show for kids/teens that I've seen in a while
As an adult in my mid 20s I grew up in peak Disney and Nick era. The shows back then were just so good. They were entertaining, funny, and also hit real life topics. I haven't seen a kids show in a long time that I thought did all those things. Julie and the Phantoms perfectly captures the essence of early 2000s Disney shows while also keeping up with the times. I like that the shows main premise is an original idea but it brings in elements of beloved old Disney shows. Like a main character going through a lot and also having a big secret to keep, a quirky best friend, and a nosey little brother. This show also unlike a lot of newer shows/movies on Disney has musical numbers that I actually enjoy. I would actually listen to the songs played in the show. Kenny Ortega did not disappoint with this show. It is very upsetting that Netflix didn't renew it especially since it had good rating and even won several awards. I was so happy to watch something that wasn't a reboot of the 2000s nostalgia but still made me feel nostalgic. Even though I'm a grown adult after watching this show it made me dream of starting a rock band when I grow up. I'm glad to have seen the show and have it bring me back to my inner child. I'm still holding out hope that it'll get renewed one day.
Fire Country (2022)
I really enjoyed it
Is it realistic? Probably not. Do I care? No. If I want to watch something real I watch documentaries. If you want to watch something realistic about convicts doing dangerous jobs and an underdog getting redeemed watch "The Wild Horse Redemption." If you want to watch a show with action, drama, and romance then this show is great. I like that the lead character is a broody bad boy out to redeem himself. I like that the show has a lot of potential with story lines. I like that it's drawing attention to wild fire firefighters. It's a dangerous job and I'm sure you can find some firefighters out there with crazy stories that are even more dramatic than the show, but they probably had a lot of boring moments too. I personally found the show entertaining and easy to watch. The characters are likable and I'm excited to see what comes next. If you want realistic go be a firefighter we could always use more. If you want to be entertained watch this show.
Significant Other (2022)
A wild ride
This movie is not what it seems. From the title and description I thought this movie was a movie about a haunting or demonic possession. The commercial made it look kind of like a Blair witch type of movie. The first 30 seconds of the movie made it obvious that this was not the case. This is in fact an alien movie. I don't particularly like alien movies they're just not my thing, but after reading critic reviews I decided to give it a chance. With this movie I think a new genre was discovered Sci-Fi horror comedy. This movie breaks all the cliches of the usual thriller genre. Nothing is as it seems and every time you think you have the movie figured out something else wild happens. At one point I was convinced this movie was a parody. I kind of love this movie and what they went for. I know the movie is supposed to have deeper meanings and what not, but as someone who is not a serious person I enjoyed it as a Thriller comedy about aliens and the mystery of love. The first third of the movie had me on edge, the second third had me laughing, and the final third had me yelling at the screen. Once the twists and turns start they don't stop so just enjoy this wild ride for what it is.
Joe Pickett (2021)
Best of the Neo-Westerns
Joe Pickett is my choice for best Neo-western. I am a big Yellowstone fan, but I have never felt like the characters capture the essence of the old western protagonist. Unlike Yellowstone, Joe Pickett has the same great character qualities of characters like Ben Cartwright and Marshall Dillon. I like that Joe is a underestimated hero throughout the show. I also love his smart and level headed wife, Mary Beth. They make a lovable couple and team. I like that they both grew up in bad situations and the show often shows them overcoming past trauma. I like that Joe is clearly the good guy of this story and I really rooted for him the whole time. The only complaint I have is the CGI elk. Why do they look like that?
Enola Holmes (2020)
Great coming of age story
If you enjoy coming of age movies and period pieces this is for you. I thought it was a very sweet movie with great actors and great scenery. I personally liked the story even though it didn't line up with other Sherlock Holmes mysteries. I don't think that it's necessarily supposed to. This movie is introducing the next generation to mysteries and hopefully will pique the interest of young girls into the mystery genre. If you like movies like Nancy Drew or any of the American Girl movies I think you will enjoy this. Don't hate on this movie just because it's not Sherlock Holmes because it's not supposed to be. This is Enola's story and it's girly, quirky, and heartwarming. If this movie introduces young girls into the mystery genre then I don't see the harm.
All Grown Up! (2003)
This show is for tweens
I think a lot of people writing reviews have forgotten this show is for kids. As a late 90s baby I remember watching this show and loving it. It talked about real problems kids faced like having a crush, body changes, and growing up in general. I have seen a lot of reviews talking about how the character's personalities changes, and I do not see the problem. Of course they changed they're growing up. The kids are in that awkward tween stage, and I think a lot of people forgot what that was like. Yeah some of the characters acted spoiled or self centered, but that's typical for that age. I think the show is good overall. If you don't like it then maybe the show just isn't for you.
