Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

The film suffered from a lack of engaging dialogue and the quality of the dialogue that was present left much to be desired. Additionally, the excessive use of rapid cuts and an overpowering score detracted from the overall experience. The constant background music seemed unnecessary, especially for a drama centered around a physicist. The film would have benefited from allowing the actors and the set design to convey the story more naturally, without relying heavily on a dramatic score more suited to an action movie like Batman.

Personally, I found the film to be mediocre. It had the potential to be outstanding, but perhaps a different director and writer could have better realized that potential. While I usually appreciate Christopher Nolan's work, a dialogue-driven drama doesn't seem to play to his strengths. In my opinion, he's not particularly adept at writing dialogue. It's unfortunate to see good actors constrained by the film's rapid editing style.

Overall, the film feels like it's a drama tailored for audiences who prefer fast-paced, 90-minute action movies and typically avoid the drama genre.

The Holdovers (2023)
9/10
great film
11 February 2024
"The Holdovers" presents a refreshing deviation from the trend of high-budget films, relying on its strengths of skillful camerawork, a compelling story, and well-developed characters. Initially, from the trailer and opening scenes, one might anticipate a typical comedy where rebellious students outwit an irate teacher. However, the film defies these expectations, evolving into a unique narrative with a diverse trio of characters, each with intriguing storylines and subtle plot hints that culminate in a deeply moving and emotional finale.

What sets this film apart is not just its humor but its charm. It's filled with heartwarming moments that effortlessly bring a smile to your face. Paul Giamatti delivers a stellar performance, and newcomers Dominic Sessa and Da'Vine Joy Randolph bring to life memorable and eventually endearing characters. Their portrayals are a testament to their talent, making them actors to watch in the future.

This movie is a cinematic experience worth savoring in theaters, offering a captivating journey that promises to be both heartwarming and thrilling.

Fast Charlie (2023)
7/10
Underdog Gangster Story
11 February 2024
I was genuinely impressed by the underdog theme in 'Fast Charlie.' The film goes beyond the typical mob boss narrative, focusing instead on the little guys trying to survive in a cutthroat environment. Brosnan's character, Charlie, isn't your usual untouchable mobster; he's more relatable, with real struggles and a sense of vulnerability. You get to see the world of organized crime from a different perspective, one where loyalty and survival aren't always black and white. The way Charlie maneuvers through challenges makes you root for him despite the odds. It's refreshing to see a gangster movie that's not just about power and dominance but also about resilience and the human side of the criminal underworld. This underdog story adds depth and makes 'Fast Charlie' stand out.
