Damon & Season 1 Great
31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly only watched the show because of Damon. He is one of the greatest characters in all of television. He is uniquely great as his character. Sometimes only one character can fit this role, like Barney in How I Met Your Mother. His insults and general negative vibes really had me in stitches. Its a deep pity that this ends. Not through his own fault - although perhaps partially due to other characters that he loved but it is simply due to others pulling him down. He was too great for this show. Elena truly ruined this show by bossing him around constantly.

As for the rest of these characters, they ought to have revolved around Damon. Damon is really the main character, not Elena/Stefan or that nutjob blondie. And its quite bizarre listening to 18 year olds boss around 100+ year old vampires.

All in all, this show was great until season 1. It kept repeating itself with twists and turns. It got good again around season 5 when Kai was the enemy.

Really, this show had a lot of potential but they ballsed it up so bad by 1) revolving the show around Elena and whether or not Stefan or Damon becomes the main simp for however many seasons, 2) overusing twists and turns 3) false hierachy - simple lack of older stronger vampires taking charge who are centuries older with more experience that humans who they let give the orders. And as a bonus, they didnt give the Salvatore brothers extra powers. In the grand scheme of things, theyre weak and the entire series and sequels that spawned from this mess has Tri-breeds killing Gods.

A lot of misrepresentation from Reviewers
31 October 2022
First off, Someone by the name of sddavis63 mentions that this movie was based on the hagiography by von Wohl. And he asserts that this was 1) a hagiography and 2) biased since it was commissioned by the pope. Well i guess one could throw out Anne Frank as well. Pure hagiography. But at least in that case you would be on to something since researchers have suspicions as to the authenticity of the work. In the case of St. Francis, it is perfectly within the realm of possibility to write about his life free of bias. The Pope's comments sounds like helpful advice and in no way demonstrates bias.

Regardless, Saint Bonaventure (philosopher on par with Aquinas) writes about the life of Francis and yet what is written of him is even more supernatural than what is shown in this film. By all means, much of what is shown seems plausible under the realm of natural reason. Francis is of course known for his humility and this is what the film try's to demonstrate. His Piety and poverty of spirit is the most central theme to the movie as well as his charisma and what he had at the beginning of the film - wealth and status. This film is obviously not for people who are atheists or people that dogmatically adhere to naturalism. If you don't operate from a system of supernaturalism you won't get it. And if you toss out virtue you really won't care for the film or story-arc.

If you're religious, take what you hear here from critics with a grain of salt since they seemingly have an axe to grind against the Majesty & Superiority of the Catholic Church established by Jesus.

My one detraction of the film is that it leaves a lot out of Francis's story and his talk with the pope is a bit too much - he, in my estimation, hovers on schism with the Pope. I would doubt that would be the case.

Reviewers Mad
24 October 2022
To somehow attempt to view this as historically accurate is to miss the entire point of the film. It is not based on true events of the character itself since its fictional. The surrounding backstory is a real event, the character and anecdote is not. People discussing this is just low hanging fruit

As for anti-british "bigotry", i dont really care. I would assume that if this movie is in fact anti-british, it probably got something correct afterall. Since the founding fathers after all were not progressives and were trying to set up their own regime and colony outside of the british empire. They were white, and english originally, but they (in the creation of america/constitution) were establishing a seperate civilization. And you can see this demonstrably when u see wars between all various european groups.

People are mad because of 3 reasons. 1 - its "historical inaccuracy". 2 - "omg Gibson doesnt like english people!!!1 and 3 - its cheesy and patriotic. The first 2 reasons simply dont make much sense.

Great ACTION Film
22 October 2022
I have no earthly idea why people want this to be anything else than it is supposed to be - it is an endless shoot em' out. It is unashamed of this, it boldly pronounces this. It is pure action incarnate, like the movie 300. If you're looking for something deep, look elsewhere.

This is not to say that there is no plot - the story fits in (and thought-out the sequels) nicely enough. This should be seen in light of the other movies, as a collection or part of one panoramic picture. In doing so, you will unearth the plot which I will not be spoiling here.

If you're sick of what one would stuggle to call a "storyline" in modern movies, this is great break from that. It is akin to The Northman, one of these gems or an 'out' for the typical trash in circulation.

Keanu Reeves plays his part excellently. Cold, ruthless, and original. In fact, compared to other classic action films like the Transporter, his style has a bit more "realism" to it. With a rigid repeatable technique, he kills his enemies.

My real rating for this is an 8.
