Friday the 13th (1980)
"Kill her, mommy... Kill her"
Here it is some images from the Friday The 13th movie that started it all. Some people dislike this movie becase there was no Jason yet. I mean, he was there, but in a few flashback scenes in the Crystal Lake, but not as the killer though. We just gotta remember that all the great sequels that came after wouldn't exist without this film and this was an excellent start for a franchise that just got better as the years gone by, let's be honest. So, that's point, despite its famous title FRIDAY THE 13, I notice that the movie itself is very rejected among slasher and Friday The 13th fans, but there's no reason for that, because the movie is as good as part II or III. You just need to forget whoever's the killer for a moment and enjoy the movie. I think the killer in this movie was great, but some fans dislike the movie for that particular reason. Whatever, it's a movie with catchy, creepy and scary scenes, as well as with gory and creative deaths for that period. Some of the death scenes here might look not too creative watching it today, because such scenes has been repeated over and over again by many other horror films through the years in many different ways, but this movie was released in 1980, so for sure it was ahead of its time. I couldn't forget to mention the iconic Harry Manfredini's soundtrack too, which is one of my favorite soundtracks ever. And, the cast more specifically is great for a very low budget early eighties horror film. Kevin Bacon it's in the movie by the way. Betsy Palmer passed away a few years ago so I dedicate this post for her R. I. P. I can't imagine any other actress that could play her character as good as she did. She was definitely the right choice. So, here's my homage to the original Friday The 13th (1980) that is among my favorite. Actually, the first 5 Friday The 13th movies are untouchable horror gems for me.
Halloween (1978)
The godfather of Slasher films
The predecessor that influenced the bloody wave of slasher films that came up in the eighties. This is the first ever film to have all the elements of a slasher film, all in the same motion picture. Not as The Town That Dread Sundown (1976), Black Christmas (1974), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) or even Psycho (1960) - which is the grandfather of slashers - that were all great movies and had isolated elements of slasher, but not all the elements, so basically weren't authentic films of this subgenre. Halloween was the first authentic film in that sense. So, for that reason, Halloween will always be on the top of the list. By the way, this movie brought to life Michael Myers, one of the most iconic villains in the cinema history, and also one of the most memorable final girl that there is, Laurie Strode. The best soundtrack ever made too. The only "negative" aspect about Halloween is that there is no gore as there is in most slasher films, but the photography is dark and creepy, so we don't even miss the gore. If you're a slasher freak like me and yet didn't see Halloween after all these years, you should do it!
Banned from Television (1998)
For those who have never seen a shockumentary this one might be very shocking indeed.
Immediately I say that there's absolutely nothing great in this film, it's just a shockumentary. It's not as graphic as its predecessor Traces Of Death, but some scenes are very shocking though and they have something in common: real footage - nothing fake!
It's waste of time watching this (yes, I wasted my time, but I don't suggest you to do the same) to be very honest, because there's none cinematic value in this film, as it had on Faces Of Death (1978) at least, despite also being in the category of shockumentaries. Watching this you'll just get out of your comfortable blob and find out how stupid human beings can be and how low they can go, and yes, you might surprise yourself...negatively. And that's the reason why I decided to review this, because the cowardice towards animals really pissed me off.
Thanksgiving (2023)
All Will Be Carved... INDEED!!!
Finally, a new horror film that I enjoyed watching, but I'm suspicious to speak about it, because within this horror universe, the slasher subgenre is my favorite and I always hoped that Eli Roth would make a slasher film someday. So, when I found out he was working on a slasher film called Thanksgiving, I knew this would be the film that would give me hope in horror films again. Thanksgiving is an authentic old-fashioned slasher film with a commemorative date (never before addressed in a slasher film) clearly stated in its title; young fools doing nonsense things the entire film; a past tragedy that change everything and directs the entire plot until its conclusion and a masked-brutal killer who could be anyone out there, so everyone is a suspect, and of course, creative and gory deaths, not to mention the moments we get some real good scares. The film basically follows the steps mainly of classi slasher films such as My Bloody Valentine (1981), The Prowler (1981) and Night School (1981), but also Scream (1996). During the film we notice references to other classic horror films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Halloween (1978), Friday The 13th - Part II (1981) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). In my opinion, the only bad thing about the film is that I feel there could have been more deaths, but I feel like Eli Roth wanted to spare some characters for a possible sequel, which is confirmed to come up around 2025. At first watch, I didn't like the cast too much, apart from Patrick Dempsey, but actually the cast as whole was quite good. Thanksgiving is nothing but a good old school slasher film, so don't expect nothing new, but definitely is worth going to see John Carver's killing spree in the movie theaters. This film will definitely get a cult-following and will most likely have sequels.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Rise? Not really!
I'm convinced that the horror cinema is dead for now and I don't know for how long will be this way, but I'm completely hopeless about it. This is another generic and "soulless" sequel for a classic horror movie from the early eighties. It basically follow the same formula used in the supernatural horror movies released in the last couple of years, that probably is a good money-maker and for that reason they keep repeating it endlessly. There is absolutely nothing great about this movie! The plot is completely random and due to that makes no much sense to the viewer, but this is totally acceptable in the horror genre when there are good scary and gory moments, but is not case here, because there is not even a single truly scary or unpredictable moment as it is expected from a good horror movie. The gory scenes are excessive, but clearly fake and boring, which end up looking funny and not impressive or disgusting. Besides, in my opinion, Evil Dead demands Bruce Campbell, he's like Michael Myers or Jason, without him is the name. In conclusion: you won't see anything else besides girls walking through walls and roof while making ugly faces and also lots os superficial blood. I'm sure you won't watch this movie more than twice. This is the kind of movie you went to cinema with grilfriend just to get some cheap scares and some fun, nothing else. I still go with the original movie.
Slumber Party Massacre (2021)
They missed the chance of making a killer comeback of the franchise
This new Slumber Party Massacre movie was released on 2021, but my mind was flying so high that I really missed the boat and thought would still be released, that's crazy!!! But well, lately some old slasher films are coming back to the screens and getting new sequels just like Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, Mutilator and others, but unfortunately I must say that most of these movies are not necessarily sequels, but an attempt to recycle old cliches and classic scenes to be a bad copy of the original movie and with Slumber Party Massacre is not different, not to mention that they always find a way to ruin it all with unnecessary characters and stupid scenes, and well, they did it here, but it was good to see Russ Thorn back in action with his blood-dripping drill, despite the movie is very bad. In conclusion: nothing surprising or great here. But if you're a fan of the original movie is worth watching it and once is enough lol.
Halloween Ends (2022)
A very weak movie, but still good.
I just watched the movie and what I can say is that, is a good movie if you watch it uncompromised, because is very different from everything that has been done in the franchise until now, and there is a good and interesting story, but for the hardcore fans, certainly was very surprising and disappointing. A very good point about this movie is that there is one of the coolest deaths ever made in the whole franchise until now, in the radio station's murder scene. Anyway, I would rate this movie in a 4\5 scale and I think is a good movie to watch it, but as a hard fan, it was very disappointing.
