Fantasia 2000 (1999)
It's a little sad...
It started as an awesome idea. "Let's make ANOTHER Fantasia! I'm sure it'll work. I mean, there's tons of classical music!" thought the people who made Fantasia 2000. Then they realized the first one had things they considered too serious for kids. (Hey. I LOVED Fantasia as a 5 year old.)So they decided to add humorous things in and make in shorter. They probably decided to also add a few things for the adults in the crowd as well. This could have worked out. However, many of the things that were serious were ultra boring. Many of the segments that were supposed to be humorous were dumb. Compare the first Fantasia's version of the Nutcracker to the Daffy Duck "Pomp and Circumstance." Their Nutcracker was beautiful, and had some really cute stuff. Think of those dancing mushrooms and radishes. Then there's the F2K "Pomp and Circumstance." Daffy Duck as Noah? What? The Graduation song? What? Plus, the story of the flood was never funny to me. (Think about it...everyone on the earth gets killed.) On the plus side, it has Rhapsody in Blue. The animation wasn't astounding, but I really loved the story they put to the music. I also enjoyed the end segment.
The Appointment (1991)
Hideous Christian film
I watched "The Appointment" on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. It was not the worst Christian movie I have ever seen, but it could qualify for the Top Ten. (There are plenty of "Jesus films" that have bad actors, bad scripts, and bad special effects.) Anyway, "The Appointment" is a made-for-video about a woman who is told she has a limited amount of time to live. She is told this by a mysterious man who gives her a Bible. She says she gave those "fairy-tales" up a long time ago. If someone came into MY office and told me I only had a certain amount of time to live, I would call the police. Anyway, following this incident the lady gets paranoid and slowly realizes that maybe she SHOULD be saved. Unfortunately, she is a little too late.
The ending isn't happy, but it certainly did not make any impression on me. It can truthfully be described as cheesy and laughable. The acting was stiff and the script was terrible. I recommend you NOT use this as a witnessing tool. TRUST ME.
Trainspotting (1996)
Hilarious, and not too preachy
This movie was amazing. The characters were really hilarious, and mostly stayed true to the book. Ewan McGregor shows once again how good his acting is. This film is about several heroin addicts and their lives in Edinburgh. The only problem I had with Trainspotting was that it didn't show the intelligent side of Renton, the main character. Mostly it only shows the screw-up side of him. I think all school health classes should show this movie. It teaches, and at the same time it's outrageous and funny. I give this one a ten!
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
A Brilliant Nightmare
When I rented Requiem for a Dream, I'll have to say that I did not know what it was about. I am not the type of person that is easily disturbed or frightened. However, this movie was powerful enough to make me have a nightmare. It's about a Sarah, a lonely widow, her son Harry, his girlfriend Marion, and Harry's friend Tyrone. Ellen Burstyn was amazing as the widow who goes on diet pills to fit into a red dress to go on a television show. Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans were wonderful. Jennifer Connelly was also good, although I think she should have won best supporting actress for this rather than A Beautiful Mind. This movie dug into my deepest fears and left me shaking and crying on my bed. It was almost like a nightmare, because it had similar effects of a nightmare. This movie is brilliant, but never since the Green Mile (where the guy was on fire,) have I seen something so disturbing. Extraordinary.
Gosford Park (2001)
Witty and charming!
This was a wonderful film. It was witty and well acted, and I would recommend it to everyone who wants a good mystery. Everything the characters did was for a reason, and it was such a well developed movie. There were so many characters, but all of them had traits, and the audience actually learns a little of their personality. Kelly McDonald was wonderful, and Maggie Smith was hilarious. Maggie Smith's character was exactly like my grandmother. I would see this movie again!!
