Dead Poets Society (1989)
There is Underrated, Then there's The Dead Poets Society
The fact this is classed as 196 on this Top 100 IMDB films is a crime, This film deserves so much more credibility and recognition for what it is is trying to show and what it is trying to teach by using the phrase Carpé Diem ("Seize The Day")
Growing up I used to hate and make fun of poetry and used to hate my lessons in English when learning about it to the point where I was close to say to my teacher I wasn't feeling well to get out of class every time, but now 15 years on I understand the point of it and realise the point of going against the road set out for them or if there is a rule break it as that is the way of moving things forward.
During this film you laugh, you cry and you love and you definitely respect people's performances especially Robin William's as he is the one who teaches you the whole Lesson of Seize The Day in a different way instead of the classic white board and writing book, He character uses psychological ways of teaching and even after first seeing this film 2 years ago it still sticks with me.
But one thing is for sure this deserves more than an 8.1 or 196 on this list it. Needs to be easily in the 50s because of the lessons and the concept behind it.
12 Angry Men (1957)
Classic doesn't cover this one
For a film that was made 66 years ago it still holds up in my mind as one of the all time original classics, not because of the action like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, not because of the comedy like Monty Python Life of Brian, or the Romance like Casablanca but because it makes you use your brain and the further into the story it goes the more it makes you think "yeah that is a good point, now they mention it".
Admittedly this film is not for everyone, but if your one of these people who have a "Films you need to watch at least once in your life" list definitely make this in your Top 10, The pace of this film moves pretty smoothly, the plot is well established and the direction of the film is well shown.
When I started off watching this film I thought OK I'm just going to watch this film as my family just kept raving about it saying I need to see it as I am a big film watcher and I was expecting a real action packed fighting style film based off of the title being called 12 Angry Men but now this is in my Top 3 favourite films as it is just one of those films that is so addicting to watch with your family, especially grandparents as it was probably from their era as it was made in the 1950's.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Easily a 10
This has always been my "Go To Film" when people say "who is up for watching a foreign film"
This Film should have got more Oscar's and it should be recognised as a better on this website, giving it a rating of 7.9 in my opinion is a travesty. The action and choreography in this film is pure class and in my opinion on pure poetry when it really kicks off, making use of just more than just swords. So the Action is in this.
The Romance and love and that one of the character's that is not declared until the final moment's is just heartbreaking and it makes me cry every time. You just feel for the character involved as you know they are just falling in love for each other but they do not share their feelings til the last moment. So the Romance is in this.
The Location's involved in this film made me actually made make go on a trip to China purely so I could go and visit them as they were so beautiful and I have canvas's of them in my room to remind me of that trip as they are so different to what the difference of location's they are compared to where I live. So the Location's are in this.
And lastly the music. The music in this is just unreal. It was absolutely right for the composer to get the Oscar for this as the music is just so soothing and natural. I actually use one of the songs (The Eternal Vow) to relax, cook, and even sleep sometimes. The music just flows so smoothly and easily. So the Music is in this.
Schindler's List (1993)
3 Hours of Emotion
I'm going to try and keep this short but to start of, Liam Neeson's acting the word flawless springs to mind. He is easily the star of the film "Schindlers List". His emotions especially towards the end being able to go to a broken man sent tears going down my face as much as he had tears going down his, I think the last time I have cried this hard at a film was Forrest Gump.
Going to give a shout out to John Williams for the music for this film especially the theme (reprise) as it perfectly captures the horror and the beauty of the film, I use it now sometimes if I need to get to sleep as its so fantastic and graceful.
Everyone says Steven Spielberg's best films go along the lines of Jaws or the Indiana Jones Films. But this is easily his most thought provoking and emotional achievement (And yes I am taking Saving Private Ryan into account while making this statement).
This film might be hitting the 3 hour mark but the tears will be pouring ( if they aren't something might be wrong with you), but it is definitely one everyone needs to see at least once in their lives and to get a rough idea on what it was like in the WW2 work camps.
