Better Call Saul (2015)
Justice can be Served
I love how this show combines legal & crime drama. Better Call Saul would not have worked as well if it did not do this. At first it is an interesting story of a lawyer who is resisting the urge to resume his stature as a conman. Let me just say that it is an excellent change of pace from its action packed predecessor Breaking Bad. With a surprisingly slow pacing that gradually builds up around its climax.
There are originally two overall storylines. One is the legal drama, and one is the crime drama. Each relying on the other as the main characters slowly delve into this now developed world of crime. The legal part is an interesting aspect of the story because it relies on the justice system. While crime in the show is originally viewed as rising above the law, the tables turn because of what happened on Breaking Bad. The main character is now questioned with a choice, should he confess and go to prison? Or lie and get a reduced sentence. He is a conman after all. He chooses the former, his sense of morality finally coming back. This wraps up the case of Heisenberg and creates a message for both shows, justice can be served.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Watching a Man Change
There are a lot of things this show gets right. Adrenaline packed sequences, build up of tension, but most importantly the characters arcs are incredible. Only after you look back in S1 do you realize, "Oh, crap! This guy has changed!" The evolution of Walter White is the most prime example. Vince Gilligan even stated he wanted to turn Mr. Chips into Scarface, and boy is that an accurate depiction.
An Honorable Mention would be Jesse Pinkman. Turning from a dumbfounded, ignorant, drug dealer to a traumatized, fearful young man who just wants to get away from his current situation.
Besides the characters, the story is so well done. Adding the necessary motifs and foreshadowing to keep you on your feet. Definitely one of the best shows I have seen. Solid 10/10.
