Locke (2013)

This is Acting
11 January 2024
Ton Hardy is probably the best actor alive right now, and he proves it again with his performance in Locke. I'm not sure how this movie escaped my attention for a decade, but I'm glad I found it now. Crisp writing, plus Hardy's performance made this a surprisingly rivetting performance. I never knew concrete pours could hold my attention. Yes, there is only one actor on screen. Yes, all he does is drives throught the night taking and making phone calls. Yes, there are no chases, explosions or drug deals gone wrong, but there is a simple story of a man tryin g to do the right thing for everyone in his private and work life. This is one of those films where the character on screen is a real person that the viewer can identify with.

How Was This Given a Second Season?
11 January 2024
I remember watching a couple of episodes when this re-launch debuted, and stopping, as it was not good. Was surprised to see a second season had started, so watched the first episode, which was a Christmas special. Couldn't make it past half way. The casting is bad, as other mentioned, but the writing is some of the worst I've encountered. Weak gags to begin with, but then delivered in such histrionic, over-acted, poorly-timed ways. I am amazed something so badly presented somehow got renewed for a second season. I wonder what all the actors and writers were doing while on strike if this is what they came up with when they can't use the excuse of deadlines.

Pleasant Surprise
16 February 2008
I didn't know anything about this movie going in, but it turned into one of those pleasant surprises you find on rental shelves every now and then. It started badly - very slow and predictable, but once the "plan" began to hatch the twists, turns and clever events kept things rolling along. It is a short film, so the pace was fast, but not frenetic. For anyone who likes black comedies and odd-ball characters this fits the bill. Everybody is deceiving everybody else and nothing is as it first appears. Schwimmer was bland (as usual), but passable, Simon Pegg does a credible American accent. Newcomer Alice Eve is fantastic and could have a big career ahead of her.
