Another Life (2019)
So... America saves everybody... as usual!!
I am not going to rip this one because of the CGI or even touch on some of the performances (though mixed in my view). Nevermind the character development or the alien design. For me, it all comes down to story...
Without adding any spoilers, all I can say is there are so many points in this series that could have allowed for a more realistic world ending situation whereby all the major powers would come together to combat a common threat and not just the US President who is making the decision on whether we get invaded by aliens or not!! Collaboration, is key surely... at least the Chinese or the Russians could have all worked on Nutrino-weapons to combat the evil aliens!!
Norsemen (2016)
I don't know why I watched it... but I am glad I did!!
I did not know that Norwegians could be good at comedy but this certainly was worth the time I spent on it. The story was interesting and dark and funny at the same time and I really enjoyed the character development as it went on. The final season (Season 0 as they call it) was quite the bridge as a prequel, seeing as they killed off a major character favourite in the second season but I really wished they had given it one more season as to round it all up, especially following the end of the second season. But if you are looking at something unexpectedly dark and funny (and also Norwegian), why not start here...?
The Out-Laws (2023)
Just switch off your brain and roll with it...
Awesome movie... very funny and witty. It is probably the best Adam Sandler film, probably because it does not have Adam Sandler in it. With a great use of classic gags with some really talented star power with Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin playing the titular roles, I thought the movie was pretty good and a lot less woke than the average Netflix release nowadays. Featuring a clearly aging Nina Dobrev (it has been downhill since Vampire Diaries) and Adam DeVine as our soon to be wedded, and really awesome and funny performances from Lauren Lapkus, Poorna Jagannathan and special mention to Richard Kind. A great movie to watch with other adult friends... lol!!
Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
OMG... Where to begin!! So much went wrong but...
Everything could have been much better with better writing... First and foremost, Billy (Asher Angel) and his alterego are two totally different characters!! This alone hurts the movie a lot. I cannot believe that after one says "Shazam", they become totally immature and childish than they are before they go HERO. This is a problem with the writers... evidently...! Even giving Billy less screen time did not even help with this one! The whole movie potentially could have been over a whole hour sooner, with Billy/Shazam noticing he can use his super speed to get one up over the daughters of Atlas. Calypso (Lucy Liu) was not even a worthy adversary and Shazam (Zachary Levi) could have totally gone one up with the staff at different points and parts of the movie. I think screenwriter Chris Morgan should stick to writing Fast and Furious movies while Henry Gayden needs to do some soul-searching... I liked the first movie but this one was a NOOO for me!!
iZombie (2015)
Probably one of the best CW shows ever...
From the brain of Rob Thomas, this show is the one that made it difficult for me to see Rose McIver playing any other role!! Undeniably the first seasons were obviously way better than the later ones as the storyline will basically open, peak and end each episode. There became that repetitive ark of first a murder, Liv eats brain and then the visions, interviews until they find the murderer every episode but they did try to mix it up in later seasons with the addition of Filmore Graves, New Seatle and Dead Enders season arks. But overally, one of the best comic to TV transitions by the network that has its own DC universe. One thing of note is that once you get the general idea, it is a great show to casually watch in the background while you multitask... I guess that is why I rated it so high!!
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
It started off great and then...
Do not get me wrong... Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities overall is good in all aspects especially the production, cinematography and the acting as well. Where it fell short were the last two stories for me. The setup of all the episodes were able to bring about enough intrigue and there was a level of build up to which expectations of the payoff becomes very high. But alas, in the last two episodes, for episode 7, it really did not make any sense and for the finale, it really created a "ugh.... so what" moment. In fact, the last episode just did not seem to meet the cut with the horror aspects of those before but as far as the first 6 were concerned, I could have given it all 10/10... Still worth the watch though...
Kateo (2022)
Exceeded Expectations... Needed better editing!!
A greatly thrilling ride from start to finish. This Joo Won led Korean action flick kicks off the action from the very first scene and does not stop. Amazingly good with the whole one long take sequencing and the way in which it was put together was really great but sadly some of the editing was a bit lacking, including some scenes with close ups of fire (with the fire really not looking realistic but showing to be a simple overlay). Minus that, it really gives the feel of a John Wick meets video game playthrough with cutscenes kind of vibe and keeps you on your seat from start to finish. Apologies to those who got headaches but I guess I am certainly on the other end of the spectrum with this one!!
Kaleidoscope (2023)
Don't waste your time like I did!!
Well, it is certainly not Money Heist... and rather... smh! So I watched it in the Netflix Smart Download order... and I did not really buy into the "you can watch it in any order" crap! All the same, by the time I watched the Heist Episode / White Episode, I did not really care at all about the show... I had already seen the outcome and the aftermath of the heist. It just was not exciting or interesting anymore. The characters were laid out well in the first episodes but by the time the CIA gets in and then the infamous loose ends of the first heist come to light, it becomes as cliche as it comes... from the bully doing a double cross to the heist of the heist!! This does not need another season... it is just... disappointing. I thought we'd get better from
Giancarlo Esposito's mastermind and the Rufus Sewell's villain but... it all just fell flat!!
Exception (2022)
Starts slow and then we suddenly accelerate...
Slow-burn is probably one way to put it but as far as the story goes, this is probably it until the big reveal and then everything is bundled up in the last 2 episodes.
What I really liked was the animation style... it seems at first glance to be a bit choppy, mixing in the anime look and cell shading that give the backgrounds a 90s 3D video game vibe, while the character animation is... okay.
When it comes to story, it has an interesting premise and there is gradual build up that was quite enjoyable. I really would not refer to this one as a horror but if it is because (spoiler alert) everyone dies, then perhaps it should be called more of a tragedy. I wouldn't really clammer for a Season 2 but all in all, I guess I stand to be corrected by the team at Netflix!!
The Old Ways (2020)
Not what I expected but... well
It was not a bad film. I did expect more to the jump scares and thought it was going to be way scarier than what I saw. Perhaps the trailer is a bit misleading but in all other ways, it is not a bad film.
The build up is rather slow as the film does explore some themes to do with drug abuse, building up as a thriller film and then there is a gradual shift towards more grounded concepts to do with traditions and cultures and a passing on of the torch... all the exorcism stuff is just in between. The big bad monster showdown comes down right towards the end (as what can you expect) and I guess for some parts it is predictable.
All in all, it is a different take on the exorcism subgenre...
Terminator Genisys (2015)
Terminator Genisys gets too much flak
Okay, so the story is a bit rushed... and probably because there is only so much you can put into a 2 hour movie. Perhaps it should have been made into a series and then we can have more story and depth and all that but it was 2015 for goodness sake. It is probably assumed that you already know the general storyline and you know about Sarah Conner and Kyle Reese... how much more depth do you really want!?
Anyway, with the above considerations, I kinda liked it. The premise was not too bad for trying to reboot the series. The John Conner twist was interesting and definitely it could have been done way better. The whole time and butterfly effect could have been expanded on of course but, like I said, if this was turned into a Netflix series, most of the negatives that people have would be positive. Director Alan Taylor is best known for his work on TV but has also done some good movies. I believe him and his team were onto something and that the franchise could have (and still can) totally continue in a different direction. Another alternate alternate timeline if you will...
It is definitely worth the re-watch with the above points in mind!!
The Curse of Humpty Dumpty (2021)
Easily the worst thing I have seen in 2022
So terrible costume design and the only positive is the actress playing mum... There you have it. With no spoilers, that is all I can say...
If anything, the scares were not that great and the costume design was clearly terrible. The plot holes were pretty glaring and obvious and for most of it, you could actually predict how everything was going to go.
As the plot and the villain in question goes, more could have been done with the whole concept and idea. This could have become a franchise or cult classic but instead you have got to be wondering, what did I just do with the last 90 minutes of my life!!?
Cannot call this a horror movie for sure... just... I would not recommend.
