Barbie (2023)
What is Barbie?
Was I expecting more from Greta gerwig? Yes!
Form the trailers, i never got a solid idea what Barbie the film was: a musical, a comedy, a coming of age story, a metaphor for something greater ? Maybe Barbie tries all of the above to a shallow extend. There are deep ideas introduced that immediately caught my attention. Several in fact, scattered strategically at the beginning, middle, and close to the end. The thing is that those ideas are never fully developed and some even forgotten. The film's comedy is delivered in pastels, pink jokes that rarely made me laugh.
Strangely, the film aesthetic, which is pastels, is not quite fully realized either: or pushed to its full vibrancy like in a WES ANDERSON film. The jokes are bland neither too sophisticated for adults to get them, or charmingly innocent for kids to enjoy them.
Margo does a good job as Barbie, but is good good enough for a leading role where the fantasy was being sold to me? Honestly, I never actually believed it. Margo never looks like Barbie herself , aside the colors and the imposed name. She did what she could, but I never got the fantasy of Barbie. I believed Reese whiterspoon in legally blonde to be more Barbie like than Margo Robbie herself.
The film has great refreshing moments like America ferrera's scenes , full of vigorous lines and life. Also, Ryan gosling gives an excellent portrayal of a ken with an existential crisis. The ending dancing number: fun and amazing. That number alone could potentially go for award nominations.
Would I recommend the film to fans of Barbie, yes. Would I personally sit through to watch it again, no.
All and all, I walked away the theater not knowing for sure what Barbie the movie was. It is the weakest project artistically speaking from Greta gerwig. In Barbie, Greta's magic and quirky comedic take on life is muddle among so many different things thrown together; it looses the comedy of Frances ha, and the driving force of nature that is lady bird.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Good enough to be entertained
Jonathan majors as kang is a joy to see. Michelle pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly step up to the challenge having amazing moments. The film ending is somewhat lackluster, also its introduction to ideas and characters that never develop rightfully drag the pace and momentum. Also the performance by actress Kathryn newton is unfortunately one of the dragging moments on screen: not convincing and plenty of occasions forceful. Paul Judd as the so called "small guy with room to grow" is good, but not amazing that will blow the audience away in the titular role. The film has several ideas that surely the marvel cinematic universe will come back to pick up and use, lets hope that they will un due time will have their time to have enough room up grow.
Alborada (2005)
Among the best period soap operas ever produced
Alborada is a great non conventional love story produced by Carla Estrada that centers around the accidental and dramatic love story between Hipolitha (lucero) and Luis (Fernando Colunga) Both actors are at the top of their craft, giving chemistry that sizzles with emotion, strength of character, and desire. The novela is rich in characters that provide a kaleidoscope of the human spirit themes: love, frustration, deception, social hierarchies, region, and strangely emphasized, mortality. Doña Juana Arellano (Daniela romo) exudes the elegance and the antagonist tyranny of the aristocracy giving a driving force to the story.
