Altered States (1980)
very disappointing considering cult status
First off whats wrong with this movie is pure lack of research that Ken Russel and his team must have put into this, rather sensationalises new age concepts and shaman practises. This film is complete utter nonsense and seems to be coming from the mind of a conceited coke head than a new age tripper.
The main character, far from being introverted as one viewer commented, is purely a selfish self centred, narcissist. There was no regression to caveman to be done because he was already one anyway, about as devolved as this movie. This seems purely like a cynical attempt to cash in on concepts and ideas of the time, badly mixing subcultures and new age ideas. Using a mish mash of ideas being thrown about at the time to create a rather weak horror story. Unfortunaly it seems a lot of folk fell for it.
Fails on so many levels, horror film, sci-fi, drug film, love story (love for himself maybe)
I watched for the first time in 2008 with someone that watched this when it came out, their memory thought it was kind of crap then, nothings changed and i agree. Years later its easier to see the flaws in this movie but i find it hard to imagine it being good back then.. and i think some of you need to evolve your tastes or take off those rose tinted glasses you all seem to have on.
a waste of time - smoke some DMT instead.
Rise of the Footsoldier (2007)
heavy but good
Woo, this is one violent film (and i like that sort of thing) but be warned. Ill admit i automatically (flinched) looked away at one scene and i have seen some pretty horrific videos and not been moved.Pizza anyone!
Aside from this the film portrays the thugs fairly accurately. It may seem over the top too some but this is just what life was like in the peak days of football violence in Britain. As someone who has lived in a football obsessed city surrounded by football casuals and witnessed running street battles i thought the fight scenes were very well done. if your unlucky enough to see this type of thing in real life then you will realise just how scary they can be.
Shocked me as much as The Firm (Gary Oldman one) did although with The Firm i felt slightly for the characters (peer pressure, vulnerabilities etc) but with this film i had no sympathy whats so ever for the players in this story. Basically their a bunch of nutters that got what they deserve :)
Remember this is based on an true account of the time and is severely brutal with savage characters and moments. This was and still is life for some people. Avoid if you cannot handle the brutality of real life.
Death Proof (2007)
50%trash 50% genius
Hmm, for all thats really bad about Deathproof there's just as much brilliance. ill be honest after 14 mins i was about to switch it off but then Kurt does one evil laugh and i was hooked for another 20 mins. Kurt's 2sec laugh made up for the first 14 mins of trash. i mean if i wanted to listen to ladies gas then i would go for a drive with my girlfriend and her friends but anyway...Personally i think the script was just a bit much for the cast to perform and was not really convinced these gals were really old friends. QT gave them lots of dialogue and IMO they struggled with it, (first and second lot of girls)..... then there's some creepy stuff and then one of the scariest scenes iv ever seen in a movie. wont spoil it but you do not want a lift home with this guy! Kurt is one scary dude with a sick humour. the second half tapered off for me (the script improved a bit) but was fairly exciting stuff all the same. I'm going to watch this again when i have the time cause i did think "that was so bad but at the same time its complete genius". its pulp fiction on film and i don't mean qt's other film but that its a trashy film. Pulpcelluloid in its finest.
