From the moment I saw the trailer, I was hooked on the show from the visual style and premise, and when it finally came out, I was not disappointed. Scavengers Reign is the kind of series that I've been waiting for in the field of adult animation, and it does a top-notch job at painting and bringing to life a world that actually feels alien. The many ecosystems of the planet Vesta are portrayed beautifully, all the way down to the smallest details, and in my eyes, it's one of the aspects that really makes the show so great, alongside how each of the crew members interact with the planet. In a literal sense, they are the true aliens on Vesta, intruding on a world where they, in numerous situations, are near or even at the bottom of the food chain. And yet, Scavengers Reign shows us that from their time stranded, they've been slowly adapting, making use of Vesta's flora and fauna to survive. Everything just feels incredibly dynamic, especially paired with the visual style.
In a way, the show's animation is very much comparable to the works of Studio Ghibli, presenting Vesta in a highly dynamic, colorful style that's pleasing to look at, yet also highlighting the more fatal side of the world. The contrast between these are something that I haven't seen executed this well in a while, depicting both the beauty and horror of the planet. The plot isn't traded for the visuals, either. Despite following three groups at the same time, it generally feels well paced and gradually reveals pieces of their story, using the environment and premise to help tell us. Its themes are also very well executed in my opinion, using realistic characters to explore humanity's desire to conquer and colonize more than they can manage.
Scavengers Reign is very well worth watching for all fans of artistic animation and science fiction in general, and I'll be eagerly waiting to see what direction the show takes next.
