Stargate SG-1: Sight Unseen (2002)
McKay is right, Carter is a loose cannon.
One thing that kinda bothered me back in the day with this show.... They experience a number of different impossible scenarios every mission, yet somewhere down the line they seem to throw that thought process out the window.
Carter, in her infinite wisdom, brings back a device that's emitting some kind of energy (you'd think that'd be an instant red flag because of what's happened in the past) without knowing what it was and what it's emitting. Then a few moments later, Jonas sees the creature and the team writes him off as crazy almost immediately. They've encountered aliens, energy beings, invisible tech, and literally invisible monsters (Reetou in season 2: Show & Tell). Even though they did search the base, you'd think they'd give him the benefit of the doubt since it occurred after bringing the device to the base.
One final note though, Carter is indeed crazy.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Strange New Worlds (2022)
yes. Yes. YES.
Officially gave up on Discovery at the beginning of S3, so I decided to give this a try. Needless to say they've got my attention and it's nice to know the show isn't centered around one boring, whispering, teary eyed, holier-than-thou person. Besides the bigger names (Pike, Spock, Uhura) you actually get to know the other characters and their stories. This also helped me remember their names which the other show just seemed to be terrible at.
Overall a refreshing new show that understood the assignment. Anson Mount is a great Christopher Pike and he brings great energy to the show.
Also, Samuel Kirk was a nice surprise.
Star Trek: Discovery: Scavengers (2020)
"Saru...you're doing the right thing." DUH
Just started binging this show a couple months ago and I'm officially over Burnham. I think at this point, just make a spinoff of her serving time in a penal colony or something.
The "I do what I want" thing was a nice rebellious trait for a while, but now it's just ridiculous. The bridge crew is more interesting than Michael. There's this big build-up with Detmer (who knows if it's going anywhere), Ariam would've been a nice story, Owo seems spunky enough to have an interesting background, and then there's Ariam's random replacement Nilsson who's had only a few lines of dialogue.
Anyways. Having said all that. From the current trailers I see that she SOMEHOW gets the Captain's chair....😒
Lots of 5/10 stars next season, can't imagine why. Ok rant over.
Halo: Allegiance (2022)
Muuuch better
Before my actual review I'll say this:
I've come to accept that we're never getting a true to the games/books series, at least not yet. This show could really flourish if they get rid of Kwan, have a Miranda be more confident, and....did i mention Kwan yet? This is the show we've been given and I'll take it.
Anyway. There's a lot to unpack here so bear with me.
This by far the best episode, with one more to hopefully top it. Almost every character added a level of complexity. It had a little bit of everything... espionage, betrayal, action, romance (still a little weird but I'll allow it because Chief and Makee have good chemistry), and a tad bit of jealousy (mostly from Cortana and Halsey's creepy assistant).
Halsey's God Complex really comes through with the way she tries to manipulate everyone and everything for her own benefit. Jacob tries to anchor her to reality, but in her mind, she's the hero of her own story and no one can tell her different.
I was 50/50 with Makee at first but this episode makes you start to sympathize with her character. With Chief off his meds and actually able to address his feelings, he's the first human who's looked at her as an equal and that connection translates well on-screen (again still kinda weird). She had a chance to end him but instead chose to remove her uh..laser sword fingernail, thus believing that humans may not be that bad. Enter Halsey and a good jolt from a taser, she jumps ship. Hope sticks around for the long haul but i could see them killing her off to numb the chief and get him back to that "duty over everything else" mentality.
Ok after some thought there's way too much to go through so I'll leave it at this.
I'm curious where they'll take the Spartans from here. Obviously Kai is taken a more extreme route than Chief has in regaining her humanity, but Riz and Van are still brainwashed but the hesitation from Riz could hopefully bring an end to that. Jacob's attempt to do what needs to be done and trying to keep his humanity will be interested to see. If he goes the same way he did in the games, it'll be a sad time. Miranda just needs confidence, other than that she's good in my opinion.
Even with the slight jealously portrayed from Cortana towards Makee, its nice to finally see the Master Chief & Cortana dynamic we've been waiting for.
I'm fairly certain the season will end with the destruction of Reach and them finally making the jump to Halo.
Halo: Inheritance (2022)
NO. Just NO.
The review title speaks for itself.
I won't condemn the actress for horrible writing, but her character needs to go. Soren has potential but being attached to Kwan's hip hurt his own arc.
The Flash: Armageddon, Part 2 (2021)
Say "Level Up" ONE MORE TIME 🙄
I'm still in the middle of this episode but I had to make a comment about the cheesy word choices. We get it, he's moving to the next step yada yada yada...but enough with using the phrase "leveling up"!!! Its used in every other scene.
Ok rant over. Other than that, decent episode so far.
**edit**
I'm loving the build-up and that the Flash is finally the focal point of this show again.
Eternals (2021)
Visually stunning but drags a bit
If there weren't so many MCU movies being released at once, i would've been ok with this being pushed back to work out the kinks. Visually it was great and had a great premise with how they've existed all this time but had to remain in the shadows. It drags on for a while with little to no character development and there's really no chance to connect with any of them. The plot had me intrigued, but they throw so much at you that it felt a little overwhelming at times.
While the diversity of the cast was great.. Besides Kingo, Marun, Phastos, & Makkari...the rest were more or less forgettable. I kinda get why Ikarus had that cold and distant feel (due to him knowing the true nature of their mission and didnt want to get attached) but the rest didn't really have a chance to develop, which is unfortunately expected with so many characters in the film. I didn't even know his name until i looked it up, but the Kro character was just.....there. He had a few lines and was dispatched without any real drama. Kingo not appearing in the final battle seemed like a bummer, him and Ikarus banting back and forth wouldve been entertain, but i digress.
Overall it was a good movie to move the Marvel story along but it had so much potential to be better.
The post credit scenes were ok. Not sure what's happening with Thano's brother, but Dane's reveal as Black Knight looks interesting. As well as finding out that it was Blade who spoke to him at the very end.
Superman & Lois (2021)
A pleasant surprise
I wasn't expecting to like this show as much as I do. Tyler Hoechlin didn't exactly wow me when he first appeared in Supergirl, but he's grown into the role since then and really shined with his own series. It's got a nice balance of "a day in the life of a super hero" and his attempt at living a normal life with his family. The interactions/bonding moments with Jordan and Jonathan feel very real and relatable, with obvious differences of course. Everything from Jordan coming to terms with his new abilities and Jonathan's being supportive but having to adjust at taking a back seat to him. At the end of the day they still have each other's back, which is a nice change from the "im jealous of you so now we're enemies" thing.
The jury's still out on Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane but we'll see how season 2 goes. And the Henry Irons storyline was kinda sorta left unresolved but I digress.
After all my chaotic writing, it comes down to this being a well written show. The grittiness of Arrow while having that "not so intense/somewhat playful" Flash feel.
If they keep this style of writing going, season 2 should be even better.
ReBoot (1994)
This show aged well
Reboot was made to be appreciated years long after it went off the air.. Like a fine wine. Loved it (still do) when I was a kid, but I never realized how clever the writing was until I was older, all the subtle adult humor was a great revelation. Even the character development was great for being a kids show (heroes and villains alike), Enzo's arc in season 3 is a huge testament to that. The story was straightforward and progressed nicely as time went on. Once the censors were off their backs and the show was given more creative freedom, the once childish tone slowly turned into something darker.... Nothing over the top, but serious enough to be just as compelling. And let's not forget the biggest thing.... REFERENCES....all the references...if it was ever a thing in pop culture or even from back in the day...it was probably mentioned.
I could make a whole post on the characters alone
But even after all these years I could still binge through the series and be entertained... But while S3 did a good job in setting up Daemon as the next Big Bad, I usually stop after 3.... Only because that series finale in with the epic cliffhanger is the greatest and most disappointing moment because we'll probably never get a proper conclusion to the story.
P. S. We don't talk about that Netflix version.
Ever.
