The Bank Job (2008)

A slick looking, stylish and serviceably entertaining genre film
12 April 2023
An interesting movie that takes all of the unfounded or disproved theories arising from the Baker Street Robbery and creates an all new narrative. The first half of the movie is a bit slow, especially when it is focused on the tunneling. The second half picks up with all of the underhanded double dealing and conniving. Still, not much action and the anti-heroes really do not carry the film making it unnecessarily bland. We've seen it all before. The true story really didn't get the coverage it deserved. The writers tried to stuff everything in but botched it. Who was who was hard to follow, the writers couldn't decide whether they wanted the film to be serious or silly, things were slow in places, there was practically no action or tension, I couldn't have cared less about any of the characters, and all of the characters were underdeveloped. The acting wasn't bad, but all the other elements are sub-par.

Simple but entertaining and full of tension
12 April 2023
Simple but entertaining and full of tension. I'm not convinced it was that true to reality thanks to various implausible parts, but it was a good premise for a film. The pulling a gun on a cop and not getting in much trouble was a bit bizarre but not many complaints otherwise. There was enough action that the pacing worked well, but I do wish there had been more character development as it was limited to the usual 'I have a wife and kids' routine. The acting was decent, the cinematography was sufficient, the visual effects were generally believable, the sets/props/costumes seemed genuine, and the soundtrack aided the tension. However, there were too many cuts with the editing.

Simply amazing.
12 April 2023
A hot contender for my favorite movie of all time and also in my opinion the greatest film of all time. Christopher Nolan he did something that took my breath away. I love this movie. I have always been a fan of Batman and this is probably the best Batman movie and will be the best for years to come. What I love about this movie is how this would be the most likely Batman Story that would happen, like this is a more ground to earth based Batman Story, (It's more based on reality). The storyline is beautiful, Gotham is getting used to Batman being a protector but some people still have issues with him. With a new villain coming at large (The Joker) here to terrorize Gotham but also to test Batman and make him take of his mask and reveal himself. The way the Joker does this by making Gotham fall into chaos is magnificent, Killing high ranking officials, destroying parts of Gotham, making Harvey Dent go mad, making Batman make the hardest choices, that is the Joker I love to see. Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker was just perfect, may he rest in peace knowing that this was his best performance ever. The action in this film is mind-blowing, all the explosions, the fights, everything was amazing, leading up to the final fight between Batman and the Joker, it was breath taking. The execution of the film was absolutely perfect, like that was the only way that film could've ended to make it that successful. I love how some people see this movie as a Batman story while others see it as a Joker Story or a Gotham story, but I agree with all 3 opinions. This movie just had such an impact on my life and is my favorite film of all time, I don't think anything will beat this film. Guys if you haven't seen this film, go and watch it right now, it is the greatest films of all time.

One of the best films of it decade
1 April 2023
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a fun movie and an excellent guide to overcoming baggage from your significant other (or so l'm told). While the movie did feel a little long, it's a blast to watch - as long as you don't take it any more seriously than it takes itself. If you're not familiar with the movie or story, be prepared for a film unlike anything you've ever seen. After that, sit back and enjoy the ultimate video game coming-of-age story of all time. The plot behind this bizarre tale is based on the seven volume independent developed graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O Malley in which Scott Pilgrim runs into the girl of his dreams Ramona Flowers but Ramona is carrying more baggage then Scott is used to. Baggage in the form of seven evil exes; (I say exes since Ramona had six ex boyfriends and one ex girlfriend this is the 21st century after all) So Scott must defeat all her exes in order to be with Ramona and this is where it gets weird. For reasons unquestioned and unexplained by anyone Scotts world seems to inhabit the world of video game logic. All said characters seem to have some sort of super power or magical weapon, they go head to head in video game boss fight / fighting game style, with a system that keeps score gives one ups and where the loser bursts in a shower of coins. All this may sound like it panders to a certain audience, and it does on top of the evil ex fights the movie is filled with references and sound effects thrown in from a generation of video games. But I still feel that this a movie that people outside the video game trend can watch. What I find to be Scott Pilgrims biggest strength is how self aware it is with its absurd premise; It continually knows through out that this is a silly prospect for a movie so it plays more for laughs then to be taken straight faced. Almost every line of dialogue is building up to a punch line or just being intentionally funny, even the fights are there for comedy rather then tension. But I don't mean to undersell the fight scenes they are still awesome to watch amongst all the hilarity going on. All this may sound like it panders to a certain audience, and it does on top of the evil ex fights the movie is filled with references and sound effects thrown in from a generation of video games. But I still feel that this a movie that people outside the video game trend can watch.

Powerful & Emotional
1 April 2023
This movie was so well done, from start to finish! The talented cast seamlessly conveyed the compelling storyline. Moving the audience through their heartfelt emotions. I really enjoyed the movie and every emotion I have was stirred. Highly recommend seeing it if you havent already. Teyana is an amazing actress!. I loved the 90s vibe, and I was completely shocked by the plot twist. I definitely wasn't expecting that outcome. I really enjoyed the movie and every emotion I have was stirred. Exceptional Film
1 April 2023
This exceptional film captivated me like none other in recent memory. Its genuine, down-to-earth characters and compelling script set it apart from the crowd. As often seems to be the case, the critics' opinions diverge significantly from the overwhelmingly positive audience response. It's an absolute enjoyment of a movie that definitely deserves a lot of love and attention. I had a bunch of fun watching this movie and loved Taron's performance so much. - I swear I have not seen a single movie staring Taron I don't love. Also this movie is ridiculous, I expected a stereotypical movie about some big things origins but this was super surprising and refreshing.

This isn't an Exorcism movie...(Not really)
1 April 2023
#OVERLOOK23 This isn't an Exorcism movie...Not really.

All the trappings are there; a poor young female afflicted, cult like religious members, demonic imagery and of-course the exorcist themself. However, the film follows a narrative different from what we have come to expect from a studio style horror.

It's expectingly dark, brooding and horrific; But in director Nick Kozakis's hands, he has taken what might seem like a familiar tale and made it nuanced and gripping. It's more akin to a gritty drama from someone like fellow Australian Justin Kurzel (Nitram) - Proving itself more drama than a b-grade horror (like the title may suggest)

Aided by an impressive performance by actress Georgia Eyers who manages to convey so much with her eyes even when she's not talking. Cinematographer Carl Allison pulls off beguiling imagery; his use of shadow, light and dark does so much to convey a sense of foreboding and tension.

This is the most beautiful Exorcism movie you've ever seen-even if it's not really an 'exorcism movie' at all.

Saint Maud (2019)
7/10
Engrossing Psychological Horror
19 March 2023
Saint Maud is the feature length debut from Rose Glass. The story follows a private nurse Maud, who becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of one of her patients. There's a lot to take in from this slow burner with characters dealing with trauma, death, devotion to one's faith and the wanting of pleasure. The whole film has a great look to it with Saint Maud being supported by two great performances from the main leads, Morfydd Clark & Jennifer Ehle.

It makes for a totally engrossing psychological horror, with all the elements that perfectly toy with your darkest emotions. As I was watching it, I remembered some important work to do but its radiancy was such that I just couldn't leave it. The main character's persona spiraling down into a delusionary state was both unnerving and devastating to watch. This movie clearly brings out the horrors of being alone and the frantic attempt to find a meaning for their life. How religiously delirious one can become just to garner some attention and lead a life with supposed "meaning" can be seen in a frightening way through this film. Humans are social animals and if left alone, their own power of imagination and consciousness can turn up against them. This movie brings out the pain of people suffering from PTSD and how they dearly need one's support. The movie is perfectly directed and edited with some really powerful scenes. I am just glad that I watched it.

Relic (2020)
6/10
Third act falls flat
19 March 2023
Relic uses what seems to be a demonic possession, and the imagery of mold, to talk about dementia and how it affects the family. It's a very sensible subject that can make the movie hard to watch but despite the promise that can sound exploitative it's a very intelligent movie that use slow burns, emotional stakes and creative visuals to share its message. The acting is also a strong point here, the three actresses playing the grand-mother, the mother and the daughter succeed in the intense challenge that asks this movie. As a horror movie, it works very well despite few scary moments, the atmosphere is oppressive and the climax is worth the slow building.

An unsettling affair that achieves most of its victories through the gradual building of suspense. Less is more and the subtlety is what makes Relic compelling. A shadow. A background. A sound. It's all quite carefully assembled that when it finally builds to its inevitable crescendo, you don't realise how uncomfortable the previous 90 minutes had been. Its final act perhaps takes itself too seriously and applies its clever theme a little too literally, but doesn't detract from an overall impressive attempt.

Incredible. Transcends genres.
19 March 2023
"Promising Young Woman" is a pop music-packed thrill ride that transcends genres and holds a scorching mirror up to society. Carey Mulligan delivers a masterful performance as Cassie, a feminist vigilante seeking justice for her friend who was sexually assaulted. The film explores themes of rape culture, the #MeToo movement, and culpability with an uncompromising, female perspective. Director Emerald Fennell cleverly uses a bubble-gum, rom-com style to delve into a timeless tale of female friendship and love. The film features a controversial ending that's a shock to the system, but it's a high-stakes finale that perfectly concludes the story. While it's not without flaws, "Promising Young Woman" is one of a kind and deserves a five-star rating for its unique and thoroughly entertaining perspective on a timely issue.

Character piece that unfortunately falls a little short
19 March 2023
First of all, let's clear up a few untruths that are presented in the movie, namely, most medical insurances, even in the US, cover operations in cases of hearing loss. Then, the implant placement operation is always performed first on one side, never on both at the same time. And most importantly, couples in such situations are most often encouraged to go through together e.g. Learning sign language, and not being forbidden to do so for some mysterious reason. On the other hand, criticism of the plot, according to which it is illogical for the main actor Riz Ahmed to continue making noise immediately after receiving the diagnosis (a couple of months of rehearsal is not enough to call even the most talented actors drummers), really doesn't stand, because it is natural for each of us, and especially the character as presented in the film, to need time to accept and face the new facts in our lives. It is these moments that are, in my humble opinion, the greatest value of the story. Unfortunately, the film did not go any further than that, and that is also the biggest complaint, because it has obviously long ago become a trend to shoot stories without any messages and conclusions. The biggest praise goes for the supporting female role of Olivia Cooke, who, in addition to inspiring acting, allegedly performed all the music scenes live on her own. In any case, the film deserves a passing grade, unlike some other nominated works, which did not manage to come up with the topics they set out to do. Sometimes it is better no ending at all, than one indulging in the mere commercial taste of the audience, with an extremely illogical plot and maximally stereotypical male characters, using "subverted expectations", as in the so-called revenge-feminist "Promising Young Woman", which is also in competition. We will see who will do better at the awards ceremony in April.

Minari (2020)
7/10
Steven Yeun is sensational
19 March 2023
Steven Yeun embraces his Korean-American heritage as he takes on the leading role. With a dream to be more than just a chicken sexer, and a desire to own his own farm, Jacob Yi (Steven Yeun) moves his family across the country, from California to Arkansas. After starting his new farm, Jacob enlists the help of local man Paul (Will Patton) to help him grow and manage this new venture. Following the arrival of Monica's mother Soonja (Youn Yuh-Jung), from South Korea, tensions soon begin to rise as money and health troubles put a strain on Jacob's marriage. In an attempt to bond with young David (Alan Kim), Soonja takes him down to the nearby creek to plant a Korean vegetable called 'Minari', a plant, she tells him, that will flourish anywhere. Tragedy strikes, kicking off a series of catastrophic events leading them to start a new life yet again. Steven Yeun is sensational in the lead role. He gives the performance of his career, so it's no surprise he received an Acadamy Award nomination His nomination also makes Yeun the first Asian American to be nominated for best actor. Newcomer Alan Kim's performance makes him one of the youngest ever nominees for best supporting actor. Despite having an extensive career, Youn Yuh-Jung is relatively unknown to international audiences, but her performance throughout oozes sincerity. The atmosphere that surrounds the movie radiates authenticity and integrity. Lachlan Milne's cinematography provides warm-toned visuals that compliment Harry Yoon's editing. Before creating 'Minari', Lee Isaac Chung planned to adapt 'My Antonia' by Willa Cather but found out she didn't want her work adapted to the big screen. Chung drew inspiration from his own childhood and upbringing to create a film that incorporates the themes of family, perseverance and the American dream. Emile Mosseri's score is light and melodic; it flows effortlessly alongside Minari's visuals. Chung does a great job incorporating a myriad of themes and ideas throughout the 115 minutes run time. Even the titular plant can be tied back to the reappearing theme of resilience. The film's ending symbolises new beginnings, hope and growth, as the Yi family start the next chapter of their life with optimism. Yong Ok Lee provides 'Minari' with detailed set design that reflects the 1980s brilliantly, all the while, reflecting the Yi's current financial status. If you're entranced by the American dream, then you should watch the 2013 drama 'The Immigrant', or John Crowley's romantic drama 'Brooklyn'. But if you want to explore Steven Yeun's filmography, then you should consider watching the 2018 psychological thriller 'Burning'. Overall, this is a heart-warming film fuelled by emotion and the bond between a family. It's a film that features authentic acting, stunning cinematography and delves into thought-provoking themes. So if you want to experience a film that covers you in a blanket of profound warmth, then 'Minari' is the film for you.

Another Round (2020)

Cinematic Masterwork
19 March 2023
Sep 5, 2022 "Another Round" or the Danish title "Druk" was a cinematic masterwork that has one of the greatest intellectual pleasant plot twists I have ever watched in my entire life, In the first hour of the movie I thought that it will depict and focus on the Danish alcohol culture, But the intricate plot had me recollecting my thoughts on the notions I acquired from Soren Kierkegaard's existential philosophy that interprets the dialogue in the movie and some of the scenes (Especially the ending). Technically speaking, the cinematography was really superb and I loved some of the camera angles where they portrayed the beauty of the set design. Finally, I gotta acknowledge the brilliance and cleverness of the whole cast, especially Mads Mikkelsen who delivered a splendid performance where he showed again that he's one of the best actors of his generation. The ending scene was without any doubts the best movie moment of 2020. Bravo Thomas and Mads.
