Down to Earth (2001)
"Here Comes Mr. Jordan" it ain't!
12 January 2003
Lots of negative comments from people who don't like Chris Rock. Well gee, if you don't like someone the chances are you won't like what they're in! Now I happen to like Chris Rock a lot; his "Bigger and Blacker" comedy performance is damn near perfect. Also enjoyed him in "Dogma," and of course his HBO series. But this film is pretty lame, the saddest part being the under-utilization of some really talented people like Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge, completely wasted here but SO funny in "Best of Show," which also starred Levy and is incredibly funny! But "Heaven Can Wait" was a lame remake of "Here Comes Mr. Jordan," the best version of the story, starring Claude Rains and Robert Montgomery. It runs on TCM from time to time and is worth seeing.

Just saw it again on TCM!

One of those holiday films I watch year after year. I don't know why some folks don't like it. The kids, the adults, even the Leg Lamp, the Bumpasses' dogs, and the Chinese turkey--everyone and everything is perfectly cast! And the direction and production are meticulous, every detail of the movie is just so perfect. I can almost rank it up with "Miracle on 34th St"; it's that good. I feel sorry for people who watch a movie or read a book and see nothing but a few coarse words. I don't know how they get through everyday life! One warning: do NOT waste your time on "It Runs in the Family," a follow-up film about the same family but with a different cast. Simply awful.

Way above a 10.

Regarding those who think this movie stinks, I shudder to think what they DO like. And anyone who doesn't view it to the end has no right to comment at all! This movie has so many delicious moments I could watch it every day and never get bored.

American Pie (1999)
Middle aged female feminist loves this flick!
30 July 2002
So no, this is not a film only young guys can enjoy. It's gross, over-the-top, and objectifies females, but it does it all in SUCH a funny way! Come on people, get over it. Pretty much anything can be made funny, and sex will always be one of the biggest sources of humor.

To me one of the funniest scenes is when one guy runs to the bathroom and tries to cover the seat with toilet paper, but the dispenser only gives one square at a time. An inhumane invention that I doubt has ever been shown on the screen before!

A 10, and don't overlook Hugh Grant!
29 July 2002
I agree with the superlatives already given but want to add how much I enjoyed Hugh Grant's performance. His every move and utterance echo the constricted reality of Ferrars' life, his most heartfelt longings simmering just below an impenetrable surface. His tortured confusion when he visits Elinor to finally declare his love, only to discover his fiancee there, is wrenching. To dismiss this performance as just another example of his usual lovably bumbling fellow is to do him a great disservice. (Not to mention that no one else today does lovably bumbling as utterly lovably as he does!)

Beat the Geeks (2001–2002)
The most annoying game show on TV!
25 April 2002
I think this show could be good. I love trivia games but rarely know the answers on this one because the questions are too youth-oriented, but that is not my gripe. I just don't like the way the show is put together. The host is dull, and although made up to look like a geek with short hair and black-rimmed glasses, he seems pretty dull-witted too. And the geeks! Why do the producers give them those stupid lines to say to the contestants?? I want to punch the music geek every time he opens his mouth; the only real joy I get from the show is seeing him lose. And his hair! As David Spade told Michael Bolton, "No matter how much you got in back, we all know what's goin' on up top!" If you like those SNL scripted opening monologues where fake audience members ask the hosts dumb questions, you'll like "Beat the Geeks." If you want a smart, funny game show, watch "Win Ben Stein's Money."

This film introduced me to Leo, and I am still mesmerized by his performance!
1 April 2002
Everyone in this film is excellent, as is the script. I highly recommend it to anyone, 10 or close to it, despite the fact that it may have a Hollywood ending and not be true to the book. IMO it is not necessary for a film to be 100% accurate to a book to be worthy in its own right.

As a woman who grew up in the 50's, I'd like to offer some insights into the behavior of the characters. At that time working women were at the mercy of their employers, and regardless of their financial need were always paid much less than men because "a man has a family to support." Also, being a single mother (through divorce or, god forbid, never having been married) was practically unheard of, and only widows had social status. So Toby's mother's rush to latch on to the first man who would take her AND her kid is very real, as is her willingness to stick it out through horrible times, being convinced it is the best alternative to what she could offer him on her own, and knowing her chances of finding another husband are virtually nil.

Also, to me it is obvious that the three kids are firmly under their dad's rule and are too scared and demoralized to rebel. Toby is right at the rebellious stage in life, and a hard new "father" coming down on him would produce just that kind of reaction--take this from one who's been there! Add to this the normal reaction of any child (especially an only child) who finds a man coming between him/her and mommy, and you've got a recipe for disaster.

Die Hard (1988)

a masterpiece of its genre!
27 March 2002
I want to comment on the idea that this is a "guy flick," or one only action movie fans would enjoy. I am a woman in my 50's and dislike most action films for their absence of meaningful plot/dialog/acting/directing, but I LOVE THIS MOVE!!! Of course Willis is wonderful, but Alan Rickman will make your hair stand on end, and you'll want to take Reginald VelJohnson home with you! Two thumbs up, waaaay up!
