Dampyr (2022)
Stunning, Dare I say fantastic; Vampire Film.
Firstly, huge Underworld vibes from me.
But generally I don't think the reviews do this film justice.
Created by a first time director with a budget of 15 million usd, I was pleasantly surprised to find the entire film from start to end as BEAUTIFULLY shot. The ambience helped create a perfectly dark and macabre feel through out. It's definently not for everyone, but for fans of the more 2000s kind of vampire film, ei: Underworld, or Blade, with hints of the historical side from vampire films like Dracula Untold, it is fully worth a watch.
The film follows a relatively unique plot in an otherwise stereotypical, yet fully enjoyable and immersive setting. Despite the stereotypical "vampire-esque-save-the-day" style of the latter half, it remained fully enjoyable to me. Following a group of con-men passing themselves off as vampire experts, it quickly devolves as they get involved with real vampires. And boy, I say, it gets GREAT. Firstly, the acting is well done and helps set every character, no matter how minor, well, with probably the only exception being the character of Yuri who is more as to what you would expect. But fully, this is a film that was clearly crafted with love and passion for the source material and the genre. From the stereotypical vampire flying-jumps down to the genuine creepy nature of certain parts of the film. From the start to finish it drew me in, and furthermore I must say it is a masterclass of a first film for the director. Will defininetly be looking out for his future projects.
Without saying much, watch Dampyr. It's seriously great. One of the best vampire films I've seen as of late.
The Forsaken (2001)
How the hell does this have a 7% on rotton tomatoes?
I'm not even gonna spend time writing a long review for this. It doesn't need one. Genuenly one of my favourite films I've watched. A proper vampire thriller in the style of th Till Dusk Till Dawn or Lost boys. The only thing off about this film is the editing and hte often early 2000s dialogue. But are we seriously gonna put flack on it for that?
-Entertaining throughout, every second the ride is bloody great.
-Generally unnervingly good acting. The main baddie in particular has such a cold "ah yes I am a human" menace, which makes it incredibly good for a vampire.
-That ending. So fulfiling.
